Monday, May 30, 2005 Digicel gives $1.5 million to Reggae Boyz' training Football Observer ReporterDigicel yesterday presented a symbolic cheque of $1.5 million to the JFF to assist the Reggae Boyz in their preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Expressing delight that Digicel, title sponsors of Caribbean Cup Football, could help in enhancing the team's preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Harry Smith, Digicel's commercial director, told yesterday's press conference hosted by the JFF, that 'the money will assist the JFF in staging the training camps which are necessary for the Reggae Boyz, on the road to the CONCACAF Gold Cup'. Smith said his company 'remains committed to enabling the Reggae Boyz to further excel and maximise their talents and other resources. To this end, we want to ensure that they have a successful stint in the CONCACAF Gold Cup'. And Andrew Price, communications and promotions manager at Wray & Nephew, noted that the game would 'inspire' the NPL All-Stars, and give them the 'chance to showcase their talents to head coach Wendell Downswell'. Meanwhile, JFF president Crenston Boxhill commended the sponsors for coming to the aid of the Reggae Boyz, but he was not impressed with the levels of indiscipline cropping up in the sport over the past few weeks. He reminded the clubs that they are 'responsible for the behaviour' of their spectators. He implored club officials to be vigilant, and he asked players to remain responsible, and pledged that his federation 'will be hard' on the guilty parties. The president also informed the media that Jamaica will oppose Trinidad & Tobago in the feature game of a double header at the Unity Cup at Upton Park in London, England, on June 11. Nigeria and Ghana will contest the curtain-raiser, and it is hoped that the two winners will meet at a venue to be announced in August.

Reggae Boyz tackle NPL stars June 30 Football By Ian Burnett Observer staff reporter Tuesday, May 31, 2005 A full-strength Reggae Boyz team will parade their skills on local soil for the first time in over eight-and-a-half months when they take on a Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) All-Stars team on Thursday, June 30, at 7:00 pm at the National Stadium.
It will be the first game for a full-strength Boyz team since their 0-0 result against El Salvador in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying series last October 13. The game will also be the last major prep for the Boyz, who jet off to Los Angeles, California, for their opening CONCACAF Gold Cup encounter against Guatemala on July 8. The occasion will be more than just a farewell practice game for the national senior team, who are also slated to meet guest team South Africa and regional powerhouse Mexico in the preliminary round of the Gold Cup, where the top two teams from the three groups advance to the second round, along with the two best third-placed teams. Thanks to co-sponsors Digicel, Hilton Kingston Hotel, Western Sports and the Jamaica Observer, Digicel customers will play a leading role in selecting the All-Stars squad of players, the coach and the manager, based on a telephone voting system. Starting yesterday through Monday, June 13, Digicel customers can vote for the All-Stars team. Forty-one players in six categories have been pre-selected by a Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) technical group. The players and their categories are: Goalkeepers - Julian McLeish, Leighton Murray, Richard McCallum, Ralston Robinson, Elvis Hart, Aaron Lawrence; Forwards - Kwame Richardson, Christopher Nicholas, Kevin Lamey, Roberto Fletcher, Jermaine Anderson, Daniel Ricketts, Walter Boyd, Shawn Coleman; Midfielders - Christopher Dawes, Jason Morrison, Weston Forrest, Demar Phillips, Jermaine Richards, Denzil Mitchell, Derrick Planter, Wolry Wolfe, Sheldon Bryan, Nicholy Findlayson, Kemeel Wolfe; Defenders - Garth Boota, Patrick Graham, Sean Fraser, Lovel Palmer, Anthony Modeste, Christopher Jackson, Kasai Hinds, Orane Simpson, Victory Thompson, Vincent Earle, Jeff Pearce, Tafari O'Connor, Shannon Goulbourne, Clifton Waugh, Dwight Heron, Keniel Moodie; Coaches - Paul Young, Geoffrey Maxwell, Glendon Bailey, Donovan Hayles; Managers - Clive Marshall, Peter Hibbert, Brian Rose, Vin Blaine. To vote, Digicel customers should call 444-2433 on their Digicel phones, answer one simple trivia question and become eligible to vote. Each call or text costs $10, and the voters have a chance to win 100 pairs of Grand Stand seats. The winning phone numbers will be published in the Jamaica Observer, while the grandprize winner will win accommodation for two at the Hilton Kingston Hotel for two nights, along with having his/her photo published in the Jamaica Observer. The grandprize winner will also get a chance to train with the Reggae Boyz.

This is a good article. We on this forum have discussed this matter extensively, but it is a matter worth continued discussion now and long after the Gold Cup 2005 competition.Sunday, May 29, 2005 Karl: Gold Cup 2005? This time around after qualifying with an eighty plus percent NPL player pool, the REGGAE BOYZ are once again about to take part in the final rounds of CONCACAF’s Gold Cup. The JFF at the time of writing has not named the squad. Will it be one comprising only our National Premier League (NPL) players or will it be one with the vast majority of players being members of the NPL? Will it be a second tier group or will it be Jamaica’s best players? Truth is the JFF has never spelt out its position on the importance of CONCACAF’s Gold Cup to Jamaica’s football development? There has never been clearly defined utterance from St Lucia Crescent on the part the Gold Cup plays in any national football agenda. This writer believes that the CONCACAF Gold Cup being the premier competition created and administered by our CONCACAF region must be an important part of our national football program and calendar. Entry into and actual preparation for and the taking part in that Gold Cup competition should be undertaken with all seriousness by the JFF. The exposure the Gold Cup could give to our footballers and to our football, and the full benefits that would be gained if Jamaica advanced through the rounds to the final game could be said to be ‘worth its weight in gold’. There would be rewards for wins over opponents that would bring benefits in improved FIFA Rankings. There would be the reward of improved world recognition as worthy opponents and thus increased invitations and or accommodations as opponents by top tier world teams. There would be rewards for our players and coaches as they would become more attractive targets for the offering of contracts by professional teams. There would be rewards for our coaches as they would become marketable outside of the island. There would be the rewards of improved marketability of all ‘things’ REGGAE BOYZ But, let us not take my word for it! The Official Bulletin of CONCACAF put out after the 1998 Gold Cup stated, “The perfect CONCACAF GOLD CUP. With 362,595 spectators, 800 members of the media, ten competitive teams and dignitaries from around the world, including FIFA President, Dr. Joao Havelange”. The CONCACAF bulletin went on to say, “…the results were outstanding from CONCACAF’s point of view. While the eventual triumphs was Mexico’s, with a 1 – 0 win over the US in the finals – played in front of a sold out 91,255 crowd plus more than 6000 in front of a giant TV screen in the adjoining arena plus a TV audience in more than 70 countries…”. That Gold Cup introduced the Burrell’s administration, Simoes’ coached Reggae Boyz, our Jamaica national football team to the world. In that Gold Cup the CONCACAF bulletin was full of praise for “the success of Jamaica holding Bazil to a 0-0 draw in their Group 1 game and losing only in overtime to Mexico 1-0….”. The Bulletin went on to mention “the ever improving standards in CONCACAF”. Where does the Gold Cup fall in JFF plans? Will Jamaica be represented by a “new look” REGGAE BOYZ team with most of its players being introduced to this top CONCACAF competition in their inexperienced state? Will the JFF be sending our young innocents like lamb to the slaughter? Will it be three first round Group matches, three losses then Home? Were there really any preparations for our young innocents, before being sent to do battle with the other well-prepared and experienced teams? In the 2003 Gold Cup the Reggae Boyz advanced to the Quarter-Finals where a 5-0 shellacking by Mexico in the rarefied atmosphere of Mexico City put an end to the Reggae Boyz campaign. What will it be this time around? The Gold Cup is described as, “The showpiece event for men’s national sides in the CONCACAF region. Contested every two years, it crowns the champion team of the region. The USA won the inaugural competition in 1991, defeating Honduras before 40,000 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in California . Mexico then won three consecutive titles, the third in 1998 before a crowd of 91,000 in Los Angeles , before Canada won its first major international honor in more than 100 years of football history in 2000. After the USA claimed the 2002 title, Mexico returned to the top of the Confederation with their fourth crown”. What is our JFF’s aim on entering this showpiece event? What is our JFF trying to achieve? Do you know?
