The National Premier League is the top football league in Jamaica . Twelve teams currently compete in the league, which is privately sponsored. Past sponsors have been Wray and Nephews and Cash Plus Ltd

The competition is divided into four rounds. In the first three rounds each team play each other once; after the third round (i.e. after 33 games) the top six teams will be placed in one group and the bottom six in another. The top six teams will play against each other in the fourth and final round, with the top team becoming the champion. The bottom six teams will also only play against each other and and the bottom two teams relegated at the end of the season.

The top two teams from the league qualify for the CFU Club Championship, To date, the NPL has produced three Caribbean championships by Portmore United F.C. (2005) and Harbour View F.C. (2004 & 2007).

Congratulations to 2007-2008 Champions Portmore United
At the Premier League Clubs Association awards ceremony held recently at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, national champions Portmore United walked away with a total of eleven of the 24 awards. Portmore United had the most wins, scored the most goals (56) and were named the best defensive team. Their head coach, former Reggae Boyz defender Linval Dixon, was named coach of the year and forward Roen Nelson bagged two awards with the top scorer in the league (16) and also the top scorer in the third round (10).

Portmore’s sensational and hard working Ricardo Cousins was named junior player of the season and Shawn Sawyers named goalkeeper of the year. Portmore’s central defender, Adrian Reid, was voted player of the season while Captain Anthony Modeste received an award of $30,000 for leading his team to victor and the $100,000 Tony Burrowes Award.

Other winners included Daniel Shaw of August Town, the top goalscorer in the second round, and Damion Harwood of St Georges and Oneke Ford of Sporting Central Academy both on six goals to tie for top spot in the first round.

The $2.25 million award for winning the league went to Champions Portmore United, second-place Tivoli Gardens took home $1 million, third-place Boys' Town $700,000 and went to Harbour View for fourth.
