Him make some nice one two touches, won some free kicks in dangerous positions. Overall though it was a bad performance by the team. They go into their 10 day break, with something to think about. Their next game is in Colorado on July 4th.

It must be cool to get the future autograph and see him up close and personal. Seems them didn't have much rest with them being back on plan and in Florida in morning after the match.

The massive hoping to see him in national colours in friedly and September games. He will be available days before the September 7 game because his team will have another 11-14 days break from August to September around that time. Their next game after them last August match will be on September 14.

I don't see why not, he looks quite sharp in his movements, touches and turns. If King is not brought back I'd say we should invite Darren.

Yet on the other hand will our current midfielders be able to get him the ball in dangerous positions? and that's the potentially frustrating situation Darren could face.

Without new people in the middle to push Darren ball, and tactics catered toward Darren's strength as a thru ball specialist (getting behind defenders) he'll struggle to score.

I'm hoping Darren is taken seriously enough by Tappa to plan for him.

Even though he hasn't find that scoring form yet and his finishing needs polishing, he's still the sharpest looking striker we have. We should take a chance with him now and not wait. Finding the net for us in any up coming match could be the catalyst which takes his confidence to another level, and solidify himself as a dangerous striker in ConCaCaf.

Ok thanks. Yep, definitely think we need to do everything we can to support him.

I'd probably go with Fuller playing behind him in a CF/CAM role, because he's the one player we can count on to get control of the ball and put through decent balls for him to run onto.

Once again dont go crazy critisizing Whitecaps for their performance on sat night. Remember with exception of Mattocks, they played last sun then Wed then had to travel to LA for Sat game. I give them a pass for this game. I guarantee you a fresh Whitecaps would give LA serious run.

The Whitecaps playmaker from Ghana is decent and the kinda playmaker we could use but he too was flat on Sat.

Have to agree with HI, that it doesn't make sense to bring Mattocks and we dont have a true playmaker to get him ball when makes his runs...

Darren who scored 2 two weeks ago is the same player last Saturday. I didn't see any decline in his confidence, his mental approach was still strong even though the team was playing like a shell of themselves. Therefore it's the same Darren and that's the one we want on the front line.

Yes I agree with Fuller playing in the hole behind Darren.

Here's my pick for the USA match in 4-5-1 set:

-------------------------Darren---------------------

--------------------------Fuller--------------------

McAnuff--------------Phillips----Austin--------------Dane

Smith----------------Nugs'y------Jason------------Mariappa

Tappa have tried Jason in that central role and it worked well for us in the GCC against HON.

Jason would give us the ability to handle the ball better in defense just like Derossi for Italy. Jason's role would be as a buffer for midfielders to combo with as they try to go forward out of the defensive third into a ball possession flow.

This set up will give us great balance in the middle of the pitch as well we have our strengths on the flanks as usual.

McAnuff on the flanks can contribute right away since the flank position is less demanding than playing in the middle.

Phillips is the heart of our team and he understands the team. It's time he's given the captains arm band and change his role to creative/holding midfielder. He's already showing signs he's mentally and tactically capable of handling this role in an efficient way.

I know the coaching staff is thinking of new players (McAnuff is on board), unless it's Hoilett and/or say Nathan Dyer from Swansea it's just a waste of time at this point. We need players that are already playing at a high level so when they come in it's not a question if they are capable, but just a matter of blending into the system quickly.

If these new players don't come in on time, well, with McAnuff on board we enough to make up the difference by switching certain roles around. And we all agree that Phillips is not used to the best of his ability for the team.

He can certainly be called to the squad, but I have to see more of Mattocks before I am convinced he is a certain starter.

The way he currently plays, his success is highly dependent on the opponents defensive line playing high and him getting through balls to run onto. He plays on the shoulder of defenders which is a good thing, but sometimes the timing or effort on running off the ball could be a little better. The Galaxy played deep and the few times he got the ball he would collect make a neat pass, but the run after the neat pass is what was missing and the pace of his decision making. Was a little too casual.

Jamaica should try find out if them right back Lee have a Jamaican Aunt and recruit him LOL. Him would solve all our right back problems.

Another Kelly argument...if Kelly not making much of a difference in our semi-pro league what make you think he'll make a difference on the national team where the demand is greater? We have to be realistic and stop living in the past regarding these players; and Hue included as well.

Daren drogba should get the start in our next friendly against, oh wait we couldn't judge him from how he plays against the 37th rank African team. He may score 4 alone.

Growing pains!

GORDON WILLIAMS, STAR Writer

Darren Mattocks was desperate. He walked briskly - even ran - as he moved about the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport on Sunday. But the Vancouver Whitecaps rookie in North America's Major League Soccer (MLS) kept confronting obstacles in a frantic attempt to get from the United States to Jamaica and take full advantage of a few days off from the team.

His original flight had been delayed for hours. Other flights were overbooked. One airline had stopped selling tickets to Kingston. Finally, Mattocks plopped down on the floor, unpacked his laptop and hooked it up to his cellphone.

"I guess I'll just have to be patient," he said.

That advice has been useful often for the 21-year-old former Bridgeport High star in his first year of profess-ional football. The season has been up and down. Mattocks relished being selected second in MLS SuperDraft 2012. Then, after playing a single minute in two games, he watched weeks of MLS go by, shelved by a kitchen accident in which he burned his arm. He has since found the net three times in seven games and is now a regular starter.

"Obviously, the injury set me back like eight, nine games," the striker said. " ... But I have come back and I've been scoring goals. That's been good."

ill-timed tackle

There's been more bad. Mattocks was sent off for the first time in his pro career after receiving two cautions in game recently - one for diving, the other, five minutes later, for an ill-timed tackle. And, although Vancouver are among the teams which have rarely lost, the club was clobbered 3-0 by Los Angeles Galaxy last Saturday night.

So Mattocks needed a break.

"I'm just going home to spend a couple days with family," said the Portmore, St Catherine, native, whose next game is July 4. "My mom has been in Vancouver with me, but I would look for my dad, my brothers, a couple of my friends, just to see that everyone is doing OK."

The ejection against Colorado Rapids cost him a game suspension. But Mattocks is philosophical, refusing to overpunish himself. "It's a learning process," he explained. "Everybody makes mistakes."

Vancouver beat Colorado, but Mattocks vowed he won't be accused of diving and will be more careful tackling in the future. He's paid for scoring goals. He must stay on the field.

"I won't make the same mistakes again," Mattocks said, refusing to believe he didn't get the benefit of the referee's decision because he's a rookie.

He needs to grow up. Fast. Mattocks thinks he's "in the mix" to help Jamaica's World Cup qualifying campaign, which began this month in the CONCACAF semi-final round. But the Reggae Boyz's pool of strikers is deep, with experienced Ryan Johnson, Ricardo Fuller, Omar Cummings, Luton Shelton, and even suspended Marlon King, already ahead of him.

"I think (Jamaica have) got a lot of quality strikers up front," Mattocks said. " ... But the statement that I can make for myself is just continue scoring goals in MLS and I don't think you can look past a goalscorer."

Mattocks has proven since school that he is an effective finisher. Yet it's the striker's speed that grabs attention. The MLS is already adjusting.

"I'm surprised you know," said Mattocks smiling. "I scored a couple goals against Houston (Dynamo) and every team I'm playing against right now is playing really deep."

That strategy, he vowed, won't work.

"They can't coach speed," Mattocks laughed.

He has acknowledged the big step from college to the pros. Defenders are faster, stronger and "more intelligent." His obligations have expanded to helping defend. The stakes are high.

"I've got to stay sharp for 90 minutes," Mattocks said. "At college, you could probably take a five-minute break every now and then in the game, but not in the pros. It's a job, you know, so if I'm not doing my job I'll be out."

heavier workload

This season Vancouver will play more than 30 regular season MLS games, plus knockout competitions, and possibly the playoffs. Mattocks' season effectively began in January, at preseason camp, and will extend possibly through December 1, if the team gets to the final. The workload is much heavier than Mattocks was used to in college, but he swears he won't hit the 'Rookie Wall', a time when first-year pros get tired, falter and lose production.

"Persons told me that I would take some time to adjust (so) don't be surprised if I'm not scoring goals or getting playing time," Mattocks explained. "I never tell myself that because I know my abilities.

" ... I have youthful exuberance on my side. It has been long months ... It can wear into anybody, even a 21-year-old. But for the most part I should be able to stay pretty sharp throughout the season."

He gets support at the club. When Mattocks was sent off at the hour mark, 10-man Vancouver hung on to preserve the victory. Teammates never blamed him for the added pressure.

"They understand the nature of the red card," said Mattocks. "No one complained, like show bad vibes towards me. They told me to keep my head up."

And to be patient.

Mattocks strikes again in MLS

BY PAUL BURROWES Observer writer

DARREN Mattocks scored his fourth goal in US Major League Soccer Wednesday night as the Vancouver Whitecaps clipped Colorado Rapids, 1-0, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver.

The Jamaican rookie netted in the 43rd minute for the Whitecaps to climb into third place in the Western Conference with 29 points, seven adrift of fifth-placed Rapids.

Mattocks capitalised on Drew Moor's blunder two minutes before the break from a Jordan Harvey low-cross.

Moor's poor clearance deflected straight to the feet of the Jamaican, who joined Frenchman Sébastien Le Toux as the leading scorer for the Whitecaps with four goals.

Mattocks is also the leading scorer among Jamaicans half-way in the MLS season, ahead of Colorado Rapids' Omar Cummings and Toronto FC's Ryan Johnson (three goals apiece); San Jose Earthquakes' Khari Stephenson (two goals), and Rapids' Tyrone Marshall, and New York Red Bull's Dane Richards (one each).

Mattocks has started in five of eight matches this season, logging a total of 428 minutes and picking up five yellow cards -- two in one game.

Saw the highlights and he got n easy one today but it counts just the same. Would in double digits or close to it in goals if he didn't so much time... Just cant see see Tappa bypassing him at least for the upcoming friendlies, unless Van refuse to release him.

O no! Not another suspension.. At least he can start with a clean slate after this suspension and hopefully get it right... This is way too many cards for a foward and your best foward at that. Common sense..
