TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Steven Morrissey will have the opportunity to become the sole leading goalscorer in the 2012 Veikkasusliiga (Finland's top-tier football) when his team VPS go up against Inter Turku at the Veritas Stadion in Turku this morning at 10:30 Jamaican time.
Starting in 11 of 12 appearances for VPS this season, Morrissey has so far scored eight goals. He is averaging a goal every 114 minutes and on four occasions the striker has scored first for his Finland team.
The Jamaican is joint leading scorer with JJK's Tamás Gruborovics whose four of eight goals were from the penalty spot.
Morrissey, who spent several seasons with Portmore United, is one of only two players to have scored a hat-trick in the Veikkausliiga in 2012. He has so far led VPS to fourth place in the league with 20 points from 12 matches, after leaders HJK (27 points), Inter Turku (25 points), and Mariehamm (24 points).
Enjoying his best season ever as a striker, Morrissey scored only four goals for VPS in 2011.
He has never scored against Inter Turku, after two appearances, and is hoping to come good today.
But VPS record against Inter Turku has not been good.
Inter Turku have won nine of their 14 matches in the league and five of the six matches at home.
Tappa might want to take a look at a Morrisson in friendlies as he's more inform than Tremaine Stewart who has 1 goal so far Aalesunds... Check out link:
Just hope the poster "vishe" is really a she and not a "heshe."
Any video clips of Morrissey in action?
Here's his two goals against Honka. First goal around 1:50, some very dodgy defending from Honka, but still a nice goal. Second goal starts from about 4:10 :
Good stuff in Video from Mr Morrisson but based on what I saw in clips the Finnish league is no better that NPL. They just have some prettier fields and more money to pay players.
Morrissey and Tremaine Stewarts have similar games. They're about same height and build with pace. Based on his performances this season Morrissey should get a look by one of the better leagues, like Norway or Sweden.
Once again nuff props to PMU mgmt on getting these players ready for the overseas market.

And some folks thought I was being too harsh on PERENIAL Reggaeboyz selectee, Navion Boyd........This man is a FIXTURE in almost every Whitmore squad and cannot even break into a SECOND DIVISION Finland squad.............While Whitmore is telling other players that they have to meet this requirement and that requirement before they can wear a Jamaica uniform?

Jamaica and Tivoli Gardens striker Navion "Boysie" body is back home from Finland, less than two weeks after taking up a four month contract in the Scandinavian country.
Boyd, who left Jamaica on July 30 to join second division club, Oulun Palloseura, returned home on Sunday, August 7.
RJR Sports spoke with him about his unexpected early return.
"It's not really a big deal. It’s just the team that I went to says I need to learn to play their kind of football, which is a European kind of football. I think they want me to come back next year but I’ll wait and see what happens," Boyd said.
He had scored a team high 11 goals last season to help Tivoli Gardens win the national premier league title.

BANGING on the door of national selection, 26-year-old Jamaican player Steven Morrissey struck twice for VPS to edge Haka, 2-1, in the Finnish Premier Division on Sunday in Hietalahti, Vaasa.
Morrissey is now the top goalscorer in the Veikkausliiga with 11 goals (and two assists) from 17 matches. He is now averaging a goal every 126 minutes, enhanced by two braces and a hat-trick.
MORRISSEY... struck twice for Finnish Premier Division team on Sunday
A Portmore United player, Morrissey got on the scoresheet in the opening minute and doubled the advantage in the 23rd from an assist by fellow striker Robin Lod.
Jonne Hjelm secured his second goal of the season when he reduced the deficit for Haka in the 39th. But with no goals in the second half, VPS held on for victory to move up to fifth place with 33 points. Haka fell to 11th place in the 12-team competition with 22 points, two ahead of cellar team Jaro.
On the heels of Morrissey are three players with 10 goals — Nigerian Babatunde Wusu of JJK, Georgian Irakli Sirbiladze of Inter Turku and Hungarian Tamás Gruborovics, also of JJK.
VPS, short for Vaasan Palloseura, which include another Jamaican in their line-up, O'Brian Woodbine, will next take on seventh-placed Honka (32 points) next Monday at Tapiolan Urheilupuisto in Espoo at 10:30 am Jamaican time.
Morrissey has already scored twice in five appearances against Honka who, however, hold the advantage in head-to-head clashes with VPS. Honka have won nine of their last 16 matches, drawing five and losing only two. VPS will have the psychological advantage, having beaten them in their last encounter on June 20 when Morrissey netted in the 44th and 90th minutes.
The Jamaican's performance stood out all the more this season as he scored the opening goals in six matches and the winning goals in four matches in the top-flight division in Finland, one of the top 32 leagues in Europe.
