Volvo haven't beaten York of St.Thomas so why is VOLVO representing the East? Yoork beat Axum by 6-5 a couple of days ago, maybe I am behind on the times. Am I?

DRAX HALL, St Ann — A double strike from Everton Marsh propelled St Ann club Volvo FC into the Premier League play-off when they defeated York of St Thomas 2-0 at Drax Hall on Wednesday.

Marsh scored in the 72nd and 83rd minutes.

Volvo, with the home advantage, started out attacking through Christopher Green, Marsh, Roshane Henry and Jamaul Stoddart, but were closely monitored by Keman Seivwright and Damein Hibbert.

Henry should have sent his team ahead when his shot went a begging across an open goal. Shortly after, Roger Knight's shot from 50 metres had goalkeeper Donan Atkison beaten, hit the crossbar and went out of play.

York gradually countered through Eric Allison, Lennox Cargill, Demar Ballen and Miguel Ricketts as the half ended.

In the second half, a York combination of Demar Ballen, Eric Allison and Charles Williams saw Williams' shot hit the right upright, but Rodney recovered to hold.

Volvo took the lead when Marsh was at the end of a Jermain Wheldon-Dale Wallace combination, lobbing the advancing Donan Atkinso as the crowds erupted.

Marsh got his second goal after a corner was punched out by the York goalkeeper and fell kindly for him to tap into an empty net.

Winning coach David Pryce was elated.

"We give God thanks again. Both teams settled as the game progressed; it was a hard-fought game... We wanted it more; we were patient... and we won," he said.

York's Winston Downie was disappointed with the defeat.

"There are factors that hindered our performance. We stuck to the task and played well until we conceded the first goal, then the defence went into disarray. It was very difficult playing here at Drax Hall," he conceded.

Eastern Condeferation champions Volvo will be joined in the four-team Premier League play-offs by New Green, Savannah FC and Cavalier, the respective South-Central, Western and Kingston and St Andrew (KSAFA) winners.

Top 4 contests Premier League play-offs

H Walker

THE quest for Premier League status for four clubs kicks off in earnest at 3:30 pm today with Cavalier vs New Green and Savannah vs Volvo in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Confederation play-offs.

Of the four, two will advance to the Red Stripe Premier League, replacing the relegated Reno FC and Village United following the six-game round-robin format.

Cavalier, three-time champions of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Confed, will for a third consecutive year be trying to gain promotion and should favourites.

Cavalier, who won the National Premier League in 1981 and last played in the competition in 1995, travel to Brooks Park to play their Manchester rivals, the South Central champions.

Manchester has not been represented in the premiership for years and New Green will aim to reverse that trend.

At Frome, home team and Western Confed winners Savannah of Westmoreland host St Ann outfit Volvo, the Eastern champions in another intriguing encounter.

Savannah will be desperately trying to replace fellow parish team Reno, while Volvo, who played top-flight football in the early 1990s, will be looking for a return for St Ann.

Cavalier, Savannah strike first ...KSAFA team off to a flyer in Premier League play-off

Kingston and St Andrew Football Association's (KSAFA) representative Cavalier kicked off their third straight National Premier League play-off campaign on a winning note, disappointing Manchester fans, with a 1-0 win over home-team New Green at Brook's Park, yesterday.

The goal, a poacher's gift, was scored from 3 yards away by Damion Jackson in the 70th minute. A rare defensive lapse by the home side saw Jackson exhibit good composure to initially trap the poorly cleared ball, before turning to fire past New Green goalkeeper Levar Williams. Williams was otherwise brilliant, often leaping well to intercept all Cavalier had to throw at him.

third time lucky

Jackson's goal aside, Cavalier coach David Laylor said his team would look to build on their second-half performance, as they intend to be third time lucky in their bid to advance to the top flight this time around.

"We were slow to get into our groove, but I liked the second half. We just have to take that forward in our next game at Boys' Town (against Savannah)."

Both teams looked hesitant in the first half but demonstrated good technical skill passing the ball around. Cavalier were, however, the more adventurous with Troyland Williams and Jackson getting off shots at goal from well within the attacking third. However, New Green might have taken the lead when inexperience from Cavalier's young goalie David Mitchell saw him caught in no-man's land, allowing a defensive back pass to run dangerously past the post.

organise attacks

That, however, was the goalkeeper's only aberration, but he was rarely tested by a New Green team that seemed to have lost their way since the highs of a dramatic late Confed run, which took them to the play-offs. There was little hope of equalising especially because they found it difficult to organise attacks from midfield. The home fans seemed to realise that, and began leaving the venue even with the referee's assistant indicating an additional five minutes to compensate for several injury stoppages.

Coach André Swaby, however, did not seem perturbed in the post-match interviews.

"We did not show our usual fighting spirit but I know this team, when they lose a game they always come back strong," he said. Swaby alluded to the team's South Central Confed campaign when they came back from losses against more fancied teams from their own region like Rivoli and Meadows.

In the day's other game, Savannah beat Bogle 2-0 at Frome.

Cavalier continue march toward NPL

Cavalier................2 (N Reid 24th, D Jackson 75th) Savannah..............0

Cavalier took another giant step towards Premier League qualification with a comfortable 2-0 win over Savannah FC in their top-of-the-table clash at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.

Goals by Nigel Reid and Damion Jackson in the 24th and 75th minutes, respectively, propelled Cavalier to their second consecutive win and atop of the four-team Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Confederation Playoffs with maximum six points, three ahead of Savannah on three points.

Both New Green FC and Volvo FC battled to a 0-0 draw at Drax Hall are third and fourth, respectively, on the table with one point, after the completion of two of the six-round robin set of games.

Cavalier, who last played in the Premier League in 1995 and were champions way back in 1981, look well set to make a return to top-flight football.

Not only are they three points clear of second-placed Savannah, they are five ahead of both New Green, who they defeated 1-0 in the first round of games, and Volvo, who lost to Savannah 0-2.

Winning coach David Lalor, who was a player when Cavalier last played in the Premier League, was happy for maximum points.

Said Lalor: "We were in control of the game from get-go and we capitalised, and I believe we could have scored more and that's what we will be working on for the next game. The centre forwards were a little off today."

Meanwhile, it was a minor setback for the Westmoreland-based Savannah, who are trying to replace Reno in the Premier League.

Coach Audley Thomas was philosophical in defeat and could be heard shouting that Cavalier cannot beat his team in the return leg in Westmoreland.

"We did not deserve to win today. My team was so flat and I don't know what caused the problem, but we have to put this behind us as we are still in second place," said Thomas.

Savannah, under the watchful eyes of People's National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament for Western Westmoreland, Wykeham McNeill, also the Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, threw in clinker and were lucky to return home conceding only two goals.

But if goal difference is to play a crucial part later in the playoffs, Cavalier might just rue their profligacy in front of goal.

Still, they were never in danger of losing, and based on their first two games, should feel extremely confident of making a long return to Premier League football after a 17-year absence.

The competition continues on Sunday with Cavalier hosting bottom-placed Volvo at Collie Smith Drive, the home of Boys' Town and New Green travelling to Frome to play Savannah.

Cavalier delayed by Volvo

Ian Allen - Volvo's Everton Marsh (foreground) tries unsuccessfully to get the ball into the back of the net during his team's 2012 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Confederation play-off match against Cavalier yesterday at Collie Smith Drive. Cavalier's captain Micheal Stone (left) and his teammates assist goalkeeper David Mitchell (centre) to thwart the danger. The game ended 1-1.

Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League champions, Cavalier, dropped their first points of the 2012 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Confederation play-off, after playing to a 1-1 draw with Volvo yesterday at Collie Smith Drive.

Volvo, who topped the Eastern Confederation, took the lead through Dale Wallace in the ninth minute, while Cavalier pulled level courtesy of a strike from Richard Williams in the 41st minute.

Despite dropping two points, Cavalier still lead the four-team battle for a spot in next season's Red Stripe Premier League with seven points after three rounds of matches. Western Confederation representative, Savannah, occupy second with six points, followed by Volvo (two) and New Green (one).

In the round's other game, Savannah defeated South Central team, New Green, 3-1. Savannah's goals were scored by Omar Stewart (23rd), Rohan Young (34th) and Jessie Mayler (87th); while Manchester-based New Green got their goal by way of a 63rd-minute strike by Kashwayne Miller.

For the second consecutive game, New Green ended with 10 players, following the dismissal of Trasain Walcott in the 90+2 minute.

In spite of playing away from home, Volvo seized the early ascendancy and deservedly took the lead in the ninth minute, when Wallace got off what appeared to be a cross from the left flank. The ball, however, eluded Cavalier's custodian David Mitchell and lodged in the corner of the net, as he had over-compromised for the cross.

In a game which deteriorated in quality as it progressed, Cavalier evened out possession and appeared to have taken the lead in the 29th minute when Nigel Reid headed in. But assistant referee Oyinco McTaggart flagged for offside, much to the bewilderment of most.

Cavalier were not to denied and found the equaliser four minutes before the half-time interval, when Norman Bailey sliced through Volvo's defence before rolling the ball home.

It was the turn of the Volvo contingent to express disappointment in the 89th minute, as Christopher Green's header, which hit the underside of the crossbar, was deemed not to have crossed the goal line

After 3 rounds, its fair tosay Cavaliers and Savannah are in the NPL? 2 country teams out. the 50/50 town to country NPL split is now 7/5.

Where is Savannah play there homes matches, to meet the JFF 2,000 minimum seating regulation?

Sorry to see New Green miss out on the chance of bringing NPL ball back to Mandeville.

Guess, Mandeville is happy to have become criket hot bed, and seem to have given up on Football... lol

I think they (Savannah) will play their matches at Frome, they also have strong political backing from Dr. Wykeham McNeill, Minister of Tourism and Entertainment.

Cavalier back in Premier League

BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer

Following three consecutive years of being on the threshold of returning to the Premier League, Cavalier are finally there.

And so too are Savannah FC of Westmoreland, who stopped Volvo 1-0 courtesy of Segree Murray's 78th minute strike in their game at Drax Hall.

[Hide Description] Cavalier’s Chevonne ‘Messi’ Marsh (left) boots the ball through the legs of New Green’s goalkeeper Levon Williams to score the second goal as New Green’s Andre Salmon looks on during yesterday’s JFF All Island Confederation Play-offs at Collie Smith Drive. The David Laylor-coached Cavalier booked their Premier League spot after blanking New Green 2-0 in the JFF All Island Confederation Play-offs with goals from Troyland Williams (25th) and second-half substitute Chevonne 'Messi' Marsh (78th) at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.

Cavalier entered the game in a very strong position on nine points after they were awarded full points in their disputed match with Volvo, who it turned out had used an ineligible player. The victory therefore placed them on maximum 12 points from four games, with Savannah moving to nine points from four games, and the others — New Green and Volvo — on one point each.

The Andre Swaby-coached New Green from Manchester had to work magic with a victory to get back on track, but sadly, they never looked the part and although Cavalier were appalling, the match could not have gone any other way than with victory to the hosts.

At the very end of the game it almost took an ugly turn after referee Lewin Purser mistakenly awarded a penalty to Cavalier. The move was, however, rightly rescinded after some hesitation by the referee and further consultation with his assistant referee Terrence McKenzie. During the melee midfielder Tyrone Chambers was red-carded by Purser for aggressive behaviour.

"It was not the most attractive game to watch," coach Laylor admitted. "But," he continued, "the result was significant. It came as just reward for some hard work put in by everyone to get the team back to the Premier League after missing out in three consecutive finals — 2009, 2010 and 2011."

Now in the Premier League, Laylor was asked what plans are afoot to bring Cavalier in line with Premier League standard: "We have capable persons in the executive that are dealing with that aspect the team's upgrading. In matters of financing and other areas of importance they have been touching base with a number of persons and have had favourable responses from them," Laylor pointed out.

He ended by saying: "I must thank God for bringing us this far without any serious injuries and how well I feel for being back in the Premier Leagu
