Aztex to face two Premier League teams in October
9/16/2009 10:28 AM - After concluding the inaugural USL-1 season in Vancouver on Sunday, the Austin Aztex players and coaching staff now get a chance to rest before refocusing and preparing for a fun and exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in October. That is when the Aztex will become the first-ever USL-1 team to travel to the UK and square off against two Premier League teams, Stoke City and Burnley.
Stoke City, an official affiliate of the Aztex, will host the Austin franchise, allowing them to train at their facilities, and on October 14th the two clubs will compete in an exhibition at Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium.
Later in the week, on October 20th, the team will play Burnley at Turf Moor. Burnley, promoted to English Premiership in May 2009, will be another great opportunity for the Aztex players to test their skills. Both teams will provide very tough competition for the Austin club said President Phil Rawlins.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for the players to learn about the game in England and to test themselves against the very best opposition. They will have the chance to train with the Stoke City coaches and first team at the same facilities thanks to the Aztex affiliation with Stoke,” Rawlins said. “We are also delighted to have been invited to play an exhibition game against Burnley at Turf Moor, again another great opportunity for the players to play against top-class opposition in a Premier League setting. This is the kind of trip that they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
Head coach Adrian Heath, who had a distinguished career in top-flight professional football in England, said this trip will be a measuring stick for his Aztex squad.
“For our players it’s a fantastic opportunity to pit themselves against players who play in the Premier League week in, week out,” said Heath. “The thing I’m looking forward to is for them to see the intensity that the game is played over there and to give them an understanding about some of the things I’ve been talking about this year, they’ll see it firsthand.”

Aztex change schedule, add third game for upcoming UK trip 09/30/2009 12:55 PM - The Austin Aztex announced an updated schedule of games for the team's upcoming trip to England. Due to a previous Premier League commitment, the Aztex will no longer face a second Premier team in Burnley. In addition to Stoke City, the team will now play two other English teams in Accrington Stanley and Sheffield Wednesday.
After the Aztex take on Stoke City, an official affiliate of the Aztex, on October 14 in an exhibition at Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium, the Aztex will play on Thursday, October 15 against League Two side Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground in Accrington.
The Lancashire club has struggled financially in recent years and is facing bankruptcy. In an attempt to raise sufficient funds to stay afloat, all gate receipts from the match will go to the Save Our Stanley (S.O.S.) fund.
On Tuesday, October 20, the Aztex will play its third and final game of the trip against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday XI at the club's training grounds. Sheffield Wednesday, which is the fifth oldest club in the English league, is currenty in the top half of the Championship.

Austin downs Stoke City 1-0 USL-1 squad gets better of EPL side's reserves
Stoke City News Report - http://www.stokecityfc.com
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
NANTWICH, ENGLAND -- Stoke City's youngsters put up a brave performance only to go down to a late goal from Gareth Evans in their friendly against sister club Austin Aztex at Nantwich Town's Weaver Stadium on Wednesday evening.
(stokecityfc.com)
The inexperienced Potters side had to defend for long periods of the match as former Manchester United apprentice Eddie Johnson caused them particular problems throughout an encounter watched by City boss Tony Pulis.
And it was indeed livewire Johnson who set up the 85th minute winner for the Aztex by flicking the ball across goal for central defender Evans to plant a close range header past City goalkeeper Dave Parton.
On the balance of play, it was no more than Adrian Heath's side deserved, although City could have snatched an equaliser in injury time when full back Zack Foster burst forward to fire over from 12 yards.
After a fairly uneventful first half hour to the friendly match, the arrival of Pulis seemed to spark a lively end to the first half in which Johnson went close to scoring on three occasions for the USL-1 team.
He had a goal disallowed in the 35th minute for a foul in the area, forced Alexander Hedley into a last-ditch clearance at the far post and brought the best out of Parton with a curling shot just before the break.
City's best chance came on the half hour from a fine right wing cross delivered by Hedley seemed destined for Louis Moult at the far post only for Miguel Gallardo to come off his line to claim well.
The second half followed a similar pattern as Parton made a brave save at the feet of Jean Alexandre, but match-winner Evans was in the thick of the action before his crucial contribution right at the end.
He was guilty of a bad foul on Louis Moult which in a competitive game would surely have earned him a card, but from the resulting free kick he redeemed himself with a fine block inside the area to keep out Adam Vickers glancing header.
Though the Aztex showed signs of tiring as the second half progressed, they got the all-important goal five minutes from time to ensure they made a winning start to their three-match tour of England.
Lineups AUSTIN AZTEX: Miguel Gallardo (Nick Noble), Endersen Raymond (Salif Diao-Jimenez), Gareth Evans, Kieron Bernard, Sullivan Silva (Jarius Holmes), Tynan Diaz, Eddie Johnson, Michael Callahan (Jamie Watson), Ryan McMahen (Nicki Patterson), Jean Alexandre, Kevin Sakuda (Theo Stare). STOKE CITY: Dave Parton, Alexander Hedley (Craig Sinclair), Zack Foster, Matt Cohen, Rodney McDonald, Tom Urwin, Andy Nicholls (Danny Stockhall), Ryan Connor, Matthew Lund, Louis Moult, Warwick Alexander (Adam Vickers

Aztex defeat League Two side Accrington Stanley 2-1 10/16/2009 7:16 AM - Continuing on its three-game tour of the UK, the Austin Aztex won its second game in as many days in England on Thursday evening defeating League Two side Accrington Stanley 2-1.
Accrington, who was coming off a 4-0 win against Cheltenham Town last Saturday and is trying to stay afloat despite financial troubles (www.saveourstanley.com), fielded a strong team that included several first-team players in the line-up. The Aztex once again used the game as an opportunity to allow all the players who made the trip to get some quality time on the pitch.
In a very lively first half, the Aztex had most of the possession and laid siege to the Accrington Stanley goal, hitting the post on four occasions and having one goal disallowed on an offsides call.
Eventually the goal did come at the 30-minute mark when Nicki Paterson met an out swinging free kick into the penalty area with his head and planted the ball wide of the Stanley keeper into the net. It was no more than the Aztex deserved for their quick movement and attacking play. At the other end, Aztex keeper Nick Noble did very well to tip an Accrington free-kick over the bar and preserve the shutout. At halftime the Aztex held a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Aztex made wholesale changes to its roster inserting goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo, as well as Kevin Sakuda, Ednerson Raymond, Ryan McMahen, Jean Alexandre, Theo Stair and Vaniel Sirin.
The first 15 minutes of the second half the Aztex controlled possession as it had done earlier in the contest. Eventually the possession resulted in a goal when Stair sent in a ball to the far post that Sirin half volleyed into the net for a 2-0 lead for the visiting Aztex.
In the final 30 minutes of the match the Austin players looked tired, and understandably so, considering it was their second game in 24 hours. Accrington pressed forward and eventually capitalized on a poor back pass from Sakuda to Gallardo and put the ball into the empty net. In the final 10 minutes of the game the Austin defense, led by Kieron Bernard, played strong and finished off the 2-1 victory.
The Aztex starting line-up was:
Nick Noble, Tynan Diaz, Gareth Evans, Kieron Bernard, Michael Dello-Russo, Sullivan Silva, Michael Callahan, Nicki Paterson, Jarius Holmes, Eddie Johnson, and Jamie Watson
On Friday the players have a day off from training, and more importantly, all are healthy with no injuries to report. The final game of the UK tour comes on Tuesday, October 20th in a contest against Sheffield Wednesday.
