Bigga will improve as time passes. He is a hard defender to get around, but has poor touch. I doubt him touch will improve much, but his conditioning and speed of thought will certainly develop.

As much as he is limited I certainly don't see an abundance of talented defenders and midfielder in Jamaica, the US or the UK that will be keeping him out of the squad.

Well, it looks like Barnsley is seriously interested. Even though I have been critical of Bigga, I wish him the best, and if slow old Moore can play in the team, Bigga can do no worse. Where I am skeptical is the work permit, because he "technically" does not meet the requirements. But because he is coming from Norway and not Jamaica he might stand a better chance.

Davey hopeful of landing Thompson

Barnsley manager Simon Davey is "quietly confident" of landing his second summer signing in the shape of Jamaica international O'Neil Thompson.

Thompson, 25, currently playing in Norway with Notodden FK, spent last week training with Davey's squad at Oakwell and impressed the Tykes boss after stepping into central midfield in Saturday's 1-1 friendly draw with Manchester City.

Davey said: "We're in negotiations with his club now. We're quietly confident. Maybe not in time for this weekend because there will be issues with international clearance.

"But that's not going to put us off. He's a versatile player and that's what we're looking for. He would be challenging the central defenders and he will also challenge for a central midfield spot.

"That's what we want, a player with a multitude of talents capable of playing in several positions.

Well done, Bigga ! Puts what Morefire had to say regarding talent levels in perspective and Oneil will improve playing in England for what he is already good at.

Don't ever expect him to become another 'Tappa' on the ball though.

Horses for courses; I believe Jamaica should now focus on building as strong a home-based side as possible and mek every single player called work equally hard and earn the chance to don the national jersey.

Reds lining up double swoop

06 August 2009
By Neil Goulding

LIVERPOOL winger Adam Hammill and Jamaican international O'Neil Thompson are set to sign for Barnsley within the next 48 hours.
Barnsley boss Simon Davey has been working hard to bring new signings into the football club before the start of the new Championship season on Saturday.

And Davey revealed to The Star: "We've agreed a fee with Liverpool for Adam and made him a contract offer. I'm confident we will sign him before the end of the week.

"We've also agreed a deal with O'Neil to bring him into the football club."

Both signings will be great news for Reds fans who have had to wait patiently throughout pre-season with very little transfer activity.

Davey did sign promising striker Onome Sodje from non-league York City and recruited former Darlington keeper David Preece as cover for No 1 first team shot-stopper Luke Steele.

But the team boss admits "it's been the hardest pre-season I've had as a manager in trying to bring players into the football club.

"A lot of clubs seem to have been waiting right until the last minute to see if they can get more money for their players, but when they realise they can't they decide to offload them really late in the day.

"But we've been quite clear and stern this season, we've set a price on players and haven't wanted to go above that price. We've been in this division long enough to know the value of players and we're not going to let anybody pull the wool over our eyes.

"It's been really frustrating to sign players, but Adam will be a really good signing for us, he's young and got lots of years in front of him.

"And O'Neil will be another good signing. We were made aware of him through some reports we had from Norway and then Jamal Campbell-Ryce gave him a glowing reference.

"At the end of the day he's an international player and when he's come in he's done well. The criteria we were looking at was to find a centre-half who could play between 20-30 games a season, but the bonus is that he can play a duel role and play in the centre of midfield.

"He's 6ft 4", composed, strong and has a real presence about him. He's also a very good organiser and, probably not surprisingly, he's good in the air because of his height."

Thompson makes big move to Barnsley - report

By Howard Walker Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

Friday, August 07, 2009

Reports emanating from England have suggested that Reggae Boy Oneil "Bigga" Thompson is well on his way to Barnsley FC from Norwegian outfit Notodden FK.

THOMPSON... impressed on 'trial' against Manchester City
Thompson, who recently played three matches for Jamaica during its failed Gold Cup campaign, has been on trial for a week on the recommendation of teammate Jamal Campbell Ryce.

According reports on the club's website, Barnsley are hopeful of having the Jamaican midfielder signed on a permanent deal for Saturday's massive season opener at Sheffield Wednesday.

Thompson, 25, has been on trial at Championship outfit Barnsley from Norwegian side Notodden FK and is said to have impressed as a holding midfielder in the 1-1 draw with Premier League big spenders Manchester City last weekend despite coming in as a defender and having only one training session beforehand.

Simon Davey, manager of Barnsley which also discarded Jamaican Darren Moore, was quoted as saying, "O'Neil has come in and done very well. We have spoken with him and agreed a deal to bring him here and we're now trying to sort things out with his club.

".O'Neil will be another good signing.

"He's 6ft 4', composed, strong and has a real presence about him. He's also a very good organiser and, probably not surprisingly, he's good in the air because of his height," said Davey.

"He's a centre-back who can also play in central midfield. He's played in both positions for Jamaica and primarily we were looking at him as a centre-half.

"But we threw him straight into the fire against Manchester City and if there's ever going to be a tough trial period it's being made to face Manchester City. It was sink or swim and I thought he did very well and he swam," said Davey.

Thompson, who led Bridgeport High to the Manning Cup schoolboy title before elevating Boys' Town back into the Premier League, only last week was being pursued by Notts Country.

Last October Thomspon courageously played against Honduras in a World Cup qualifier for the entire 90 minutes with a broken jaw.

He couldn't jump or head the ball without feeling pain after suffering the injury in a collision with team captain Ricardo Gardner in Jamaica's 1-0 win over Mexico a few days earlier.

With the English season set to start this weekend, it is not sure whether Thompson will be included in Jamaica's team for their two international friendlies, against Ecuador on August 12 and St Kitts & Nevis on August 16

It's good that the Observer can use google, but they need to learn to include "all" of the info., such as work permits, which means that he will not be available to the team until that is sorted.

Tykes sign Reggae Boyz star

Barnsley have agreed a deal to sign Jamaica international O'Neil Thompson from Norwegian outfit Notodden FK.

Tykes manager Simon Davey has been talking to Notodden throughout the summer with a view to signing the 25-year-old midfielder.

An agreement has now been reached and O'Neill, who has taken part in Barnsley's pre-season campaign, has agreed a two-year deal with the club, subject to the granting of a work permit.

"We are delighted to have brought O'Neil into the squad and he will be a great addition to what we are trying to build," Davey told his club's official website.

"He has impressed everybody during his time at Oakwell and he is a player with great stature, composure and presence."

Bigga Thompson will know his fate in approximately 20 days. He is now at the mercy of the Home Office who can deny you even if you have met ALL the requirements.....................They can also approve your application, on appeal - even if you have met SOME of the requirements. Big up Bigga.
Welcome to the crap shoot. \:D

Anyway, Notodden FK must be wringing their hands right now because Bigga Thompson walks as a "free agent" at the end of the season. This is their last last chance to get something from Thompson's contract. If Bigga leaves as a free agent, he pockets any signing bonuses that is on the table and Notodden gets nothing.

It would be much better for all if we could get players signed earlier - at 19, 20 21.

Until then we are always going to 'also ran'. It starts with player development. We're not so good at it yet.

Lots of young players at HV and Portmore but....

TT way ahead of us.

TT has professional football, and foreign coaches in their league. They are more organized than we are. But then, they are also richer, with a GDP that is roughly three times of ours. But I agree with you, because even the players we send to American colleges are "old" and about 24-25 by the time they graduate. We need academies in JA, but how many times have we said this.

So where does that leave Manning and DaCosta Cup football in an emerging professional system ? Haven't the schoolboys leagues always been the 'feeder system' for the Jamaican senior club and international set up ?

I haven't lived in Jamaica for some years now so I don't know what the schoolboy level is now but if man n man talking about getting players prepared earlier for professional careers then we talking about revamping the entire approach and system !

Mi sey, its about time then because too many yutes drop through the cracks aready; either s&^%$t or get off the chimpot !
