Why not build the training center on a barge or air craft carrier deck, so we can move it whenever we want. You want it in Kingston?.....move it to Kingston Harbour......Mobay? ...Ok....lets go.......Negril?.....Aye Aye Captain........Nooooooooo problem!!
UWI to be unveiled as site for JFF Training Centre
Thursday, June 26, 2008
The University of the West Indies (UWI) is expected to be announced today as the proposed site for the Football Training Centre at a press conference at the campus' Gold Room, Mona Visitors' Lodge and Conference Centre at 11:00 am.
The function will be addressed by pro-vice chancellor and principal of UWI, Mona, Professor Gordon Shirley; president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell; minister of information, culture, youth and sports, the Hon Olivia Grange, and minister of education, the Hon Andrew Holness.
Also in attendance will be the FIFA Development Officer for the region, Trinidadian Harold Taylor.
Negotiations between the two parties have been ongoing since the return of Burrell to the presidency of the country's football, especially after the JFF board opted to do away with the Football Academy and Training Centre that was under construction in St Elizabeth.
Since then FIFA has granted approval to the Burrell-led JFF to undertake another Training Centre.

Football academy at UWI Thursday, 26 June 2008
Five years after initially breaking ground in Portmore, St. Catherine, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Football Academy is to be sited on the campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The academy which will cost approximately $2.5 million could be completed by the end of next year.
"I'm really excited about it, looking forward and together I know Jamaica's football will never be the same the moment we complete that very important project," JFF President Horace Burrell. The academy will comprise training fields and dormitories and will adjoin a mini stadium which features a mondo running track, more football fields, the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground an indoor multi complex and the existing swimming pool.
An Institute of Sports Medicine unit is also likely to be based on the complex.
Potential for synergy
Principal Gordon Shirley who said UWI's costs would amount to US$12 million said the university has a lot to offer the sporting fraternity. "The UWI would like to interact with sports and the development of relationships with the leaders of national sports associations and this if the first of those with the JFF.
This is a project that has potential for great synergy between the UWI and the JFF," he said.
Sports Minister Olivia ‘Babsy' Grange said she fully supported the overall project and was looking forward to the academy becoming operational within a reasonable time frame.
The academy will be chaired by JFF board member, former Chief of Staff General John Simmons, Deputy Saleem Lazerus, Leighton McKnight, Howard Mackintosh and Carvel Stewart.

Jahjesty and Princess should be able to fill in the blanks here.
Carvel Stewart is/was Harbour View's Chairman. Howard Mckintosh wears many hats....Portmore Exec maybe? Agent/manager type........if he is the same person that is involved with Rudi Austins's negotiation / Newton Sterling's manager?

JFF finds another home for academy published: Friday | June 27, 2008
Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter
A MARRIAGE, of sorts, between the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the region's premier academic institution, the University of the West Indies (UWI), is expected to produce several fruitful and lasting benefits to the sport of football over the next couple of years.
A match made in heaven seemed to be the consensus of several JFF, UWI and government officials on hand to launch the project, expected to get off the ground in the next few months, at the Mona Visitors' Lodge at UWI, yesterday.
An immediate result of the union will see the much-discussed JFF Academy, last earmarked for Malvern in St Elizabeth, finally find a home on 6 1/2 acres of land donated by the institution. The move falls in line with a broader goal by UWI, which involves enhancing the institution's sports credentials.
Other developments
Other developments include the remodelling and further development of the UWI Bowl, which is expected to see the building of a US$5 million lighted mini-stadium with a mondo track, the expansion of current pool facilities and enhancement of the Sir Frank Worrell cricket ground.
Falling within this umbrella of development will be the US$2.5 million JFF academy, which will primarily be funded by the FIFA Goal project.
Originally, the academy was expected to be located in Portmore, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held there attended by FIFA president Sepp Blater in 2003.
However, after taking over office in 2004, the Crenston Boxhill-led JFF administration saw a move to St Elizabeth as more in line with their vision of what the institution should be.
On returning to office in November, Captain Horace Burrell's team found the location to be unsuitable and sought FIFA's permission to once again relocate the academy.
With permission granted to the JFF a little over a month ago, the property at Malvern will now be sold and the money from that, plus an amount not yet handed over from the goal project, will be put into the UWI site.
Second project
In addition, the JFF has put in a successful application for a second Goal project, worth $400,000, which will also be funnelled into a phase of the proposed UWI academy.
"This is a significant day in the development of Jamaican football. Obviously, a synergy formed with this noble institution means the sky is the limit for football," said the JFF president.
Minister of Youth, Culture, Enter-tainment and Sport, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, said the partnership had the full support of the government.
"Locating the academy at UWI will no doubt add tremendous value to both institutions. The government is in full support of such a partnership," Grange said.
Increased sponsorship
The minister also took the time out to announce that the JFF would now benefit from an increased sponsorship amount from the Sports Development Foundation, which would be in the region of $150 million for the next few years.
Meanwhile, UWI also unfurled plans to fully develop an Institute of Sport and Medicine, which will provide care for injured athletes and is expected to aid in physical develop-ment with, among other things, an indoor pool for physical training.

Well there are positives to this move as well as negatives.
On the upside, uwi already has good facilities and the necessary space. The uwi bowl already hosts august town matches.
Plus uwi likes to do everything big, so u won't have to worry too much about the scrimmage field. Also it is a training facility not a stadium, so 6 acres of space should be sufficient for dorms, technical areas, admin, fields, gym's and physiotherapy units.

This is truly an intelligent decision, Costa Rica and Cuba currently have similiar systems. In Cuba the top athletes normally train and attend post-secondary sport institutes. In Costa Rica post-secondary footballer sometimes attend college/university while developing their careers. Hopefully the project will be completed before the 2012 Olympic qualifiers, so that some of our 20-23 year old footballers can continue their studies while training with the senior, u23, u20 teams.

Academy delegation to travel to Brazil, T&T
LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter
A delegation from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) is scheduled to visit two football academies in the coming weeks to have a clearer vision of what the local academy will look like.
The delegation will visit the Alfredo Gotardi Training Centre in Curitiba, Brazil and the Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Trinidad and Tobago.
"The university is trying to benchmark itself towards the best international standards of football academies, so they will visit several centres of excellence," said Howard McIntosh, chairman of the JFF technical committee.
McIntosh was a member of the JFF team that visited the Alfredo Gotardi Training Centre in March while the national senior male and female teams held training camps in Brazil. McIntosh and general secretary, Horace Reid, both concurred that the facility in Brazil, which is run by Serie A club Atletico Paranaense, is one of the best in the world.
"Anything and everything that you need to have at a training centre exist at this facility at first-class level. One would have to see, to get a true impression of what I am speaking to," Reid was quoted as saying in the March 29 issue a local newpaper.
McIntosh added that a preliminary meeting between the UWI projects officer, Devon Smith, and the manager of the Alfredo Gotardi Training Centre took place on June 18.
The JFF and UWI on Thursday unveiled plans for the football academy, which will be constructed around existing facilities at the university and will be known as the Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence. The entire facility will cover 40 acres and construction is expected to cost around US$14.5 million and last two and a half years. The academy will cost the JFF US$2.5 while the remaining expenses will be covered by UWI.
The Government has pledged $150 million to the project. For its start-up cash, the JFF is expecting a second Goal Project grant of US$400,000 from FIFA as well as money from the sale of lands in Malvern, St Elizabeth, which was earmarked for the academy four years ago by the previous JFF administration.
By the end of the project, the Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence should boast an international-rated sports complex with a football field, race track and seating for 8,000. The football academy, which will include two training fields, dorms for 54 persons, lecture theatre, kitchen and laundry room and the Caribbean Institute of Sports Medicine, which will provide rehabilitation for the athletes. Also included will be two other football fields, a cricket oval, pool, a gymnasium for indoor sports, gyms, tennis courts, a walking trail and sand surfaces for beach volleyball and football.

The UWI/JFF academy collaboration is a worthy project but remember the academy is only gonna fine tune 'finished' products that were Not properly groomed for the game from dem eye deh a dem knee
the graying excuse, older than '51 storm, that wi nuh have di monies fi the young and restless elementary age group is wornout, tired and broken don't go there
again I commend those involved but 36-48 graduates a year is a perfect feeder system for established foreign leagues
build a nationwide system to develop a local football industry not just a free-zone enterprise to export academy grads

The Captain and Reid finally realized that they could not use FIFA $$$ to build a "training centre and academy" just for Portmore and Portmore United.
