What is happening at Arsenal?

Hleb will jump ship to sign for Inter, says agent

Key midfielder set to join exodus from Arsenal
One bright spot for Wenger as Bendtner snubs Bayern

Alexander Hleb's agent says he is on his way to Inter Milan.

Arsène Wenger's desire to keep his Arsenal squad together encountered another setback yesterday when the agent of Alexander Hleb, the midfielder who has been courted by Internazionale, went public with the Belarusian's desire to leave at the end of the season.

Wenger has been enraged by what he sees as the tapping-up of Hleb by the Italian club and has threatened to report them to Fifa. But according to Hleb's agent, Nikolai Shpilevski, there is nothing the manager can do to prevent the player from moving on. "Alexander is preparing to make one of the most important moves of his life," Shpilevski told the Belarus paper Pressball. "He is leaving Arsenal even though they want to offer him a new long-term contract and better conditions. Only time will tell if leaving is the right decision, but there's no way back now. Everything will be cleared up in the next two weeks."

Hleb joined Arsenal from Stuttgart in July 2005 for £11.2m and showed only flickers of talent in his first two seasons, but this time out the 27-year-old has been one of the team's best performers. However, he met up with Claudio Vigorelli, the agent who brokers deals for Inter, in Milan on March 3, the night before Arsenal played Milan in the Champions League. When the meeting was exposed, Vigorelli's associate, Vincenzo Morabito, a leading agent who is well known to Premier League clubs, claimed that the pair had merely gone for an ice-cream. Morabito added: "We are sorry that Mr Wenger took it badly and complained because we have a good relationship with him."

Inter are prepared to offer Hleb a huge increase on his Arsenal salary, leaving Wenger, who only on Wednesday was clinging to the hope that the Belarusian could be talked round, to wring his hands.

Wenger has already seen Mathieu Flamini, the midfielder, join Milan on a Bosman transfer, having refused to sign a new contract at Arsenal, and there are doubts about Gilberto Silva's future. The Brazilian is under contract until 2009 but he does not want to be a fringe player next season as he has this time. Wenger will have talks with him after Arsenal's final match, at Sunderland on Sunday. The goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will also move because his contract, which expires at the end of the season, has not been renewed.

Wenger, though, did receive one piece of good news yesterday when it emerged that Nicklas Bendtner had ignored overtures from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen to declare his continuing faith in Arsenal.

Bayern indicated via an intermediary that they were prepared to pay €10m for the striker and the other two Bundesliga clubs also made their interest known. "I have heard about these offers from Germany but Nicklas will stay at Arsenal," said Thomas Bendtner, his father. "The only way things could be different was if something unexpected should happen, such as him being moved totally outside of the team, but it's difficult to see that happening as he is playing right now."

Bendtner, 20, has made 39 appearances this season, 16 as a starter, and has scored nine goals. "I've always said that Arsenal is my club and that's where I want to play my football," he said. "When you look at my season and the way it has developed, I see no reason why I should want to change Arsenal with any other club."

The season, though, has again ended without a trophy and Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalkeeper who is chasing a double, believes that Arsenal's attractive football alone will not cause them to be remembered. "You need to get the trophies because in the end, if you take the last three years of Arsenal, I don't think in 10 years people will remember that between 2004 and 2008 they played brilliant football," he said. "No one will remember because they finished fourth and third. History recognises the winners."

Nice move by Hleb. Lets hope wenger can offload him to barca and get a decent change off him. Nice move by Flamini too, wish both the best.

Lets face it folks, I believe in winning stuff, not being an also ran. Thats what arsenal has been for the past 4 years.

A footballer`s career is short, you can't spend it being an also ran, can you? well they would have to go to spurs and newcastle for that.

Even spurs has been more ambitious than arsenal. They have signed a quality player in modric.
I ain`t saying arsenal should break the bank but its pure foolishness over the last few years.

So its nice that Hleb and Flam are leaving, to show Leboss that his stubbornnes will not pay off.

As I said, how can a kid like micah richards say he loves arsenal and you don`t give him a chance?

How can woodgate be available, kolo gone to nations cup and you don`t buy him? he has quality and experience and seem not so injury-prone anymore.

How can you want to win suppen and have almunia as your first choice? spend 6 mills and get a real keeper no man?

I will( and most people) never be able to build a team to play the quality footie the french footie philosopher does, but the stubborness...the policies man....the age 30 foolishness...will kil arsenal.

I said he should have brought Ribery, a real winner, a real player and he did not.....see it deh now....

Gary, once Ribery got interest from a big club like Bayern his price naturally would go up and Arsenal wouldn´t be able (or is it not willing????) to go get him. With your other points I can´t really argue, you can´t cry that you don´t have as much money as Man U and Chelsea meanwhile you let a big wad of cash sit there without using it to improve your team the way you can. We´ve seen that they are ranked as #3 most valuable team in the World right....I´m totally with you that you could increase that value with silverware. With Vieira and Henry they made big profits on the acquisition and sale, but it must be annoying to then lose Flamini on a free. How much do you think he could have fetched in the market? Same happened with Wiltord who was their top scorer and is still a very good Champions League player.

I know we´ve gone through this before but letting guys like Pennant and Upson go cheap takes away from your squad depth and that´s why you have slow finishes and lose a chance at a title. These guys aren´t "stars" or "good enough for Arsenal" but they do a good job to help rest a star player or in case of injury. They got very little for these guys and Liverpool in particular has gotten a lot more than they have paid for with Pennant. How about letting these guys go and go buy a Senderos??? That´s poor spending.

Sendeross cost almost nothing as he was picked up at a young age (17?) from Servette. I totally disagree on the need to keep guys like Pennant because I think he is just not good enough. If you look at the two squads that are competing for the championship you will see that there isn't a precipitous drop in the quality of the starter and his replacement if he is rested. That is what it takes. It isn't about having a big squad with half of them of the quality of Pennant.

Arsenal is run like any other business. Financial results take precedent. How much more do you earn by winning the league or even the CL as opposed to being also rans and finishing third or making it to the CL semis? The difference is not that big, but the investment it would take to give yourself a really good shot is massive.

The fact that Arsenal could have easily won the league this season with this young squad will not help people like Gary either. It will be vindication in the eyes of the board and Wenger that they can indeed succeed without spending a fortune.

Is Pennant not good enough for Arsenal or is the club just not right for him? I like him as a player and by no stretch am I saying he is why Liverpool make it so far in CL each year perhaps he plays better in Benitez´s tactical system than Wenger´s style. But when you have Porto and Monaco in a CL final just 4 years ago you have to remember that in Cup anything can happen and running the good enough players into the ground is proven not to be the solution.

I never doubt Wenger´s ability to put a top 3 team together. There is no exodus or end to Arsenal we can put that idea to rest. Winning league titles is another thing, but if you can be good enough to finish top 3 in England you´re certainly good enough to win an FA Cup or a CL....if you have the requisite depth, which is where I think he has made a few mistakes.

Chisel rightly points out that Arsenal is a very well run business. But the corporate World is cruel and hypocritical and don´t be surprised if the same rich board removes Wenger because of pressure from frustrated fans like Gary who want titles. They themselves can claim to be dissatisfied and say they´ve made money now they want the prestige of winning a title. It would be a gigantic mistake but it could happen.

Wenger is safe because of his scouting network. I could easily calculate where he saves them at least 30million pounds per year in the transfer market and that is a sizeable amount.

I think if they change course and say, "OK we have cash now, let us go out and win this thing", Wenger would still be their man. The only difference would be that he goes out and add quality player to the team in the offseason. Remember he did that in the past. Arsenal under Wenger was not always this conservative.

Come n Reds man.
If Pennant not good enough for Liverpool how can he be for arsenal?

If you say Bentley and Upson, I agree, but they left.

O.k Reds you ahvea good point re Upson, but it is just that he wasn`t willing to stick around like senderos. Most time these england players feel they ahve a right to be a part of arsenal`s first team(though lacking in quality), so they run off to lower ranked clubs. None of thsoe who left us have gone on to make it for a big 4 team(except bentley in the future in suspect).
Agree with you on most other points.

Maybe if Leboss made a move for ribery early, he could have probably gotten him for 12-14 mils.

As for Flamini, its a tricky case.
He wasn`t worth much at the start of the campaign(boss didn`t see it necessary to renew his contract).

Well we know the rest..
One mistake i would say is that Wenger allowed Flamini to trick him...he should have found a way to keep Diarra in the team(as he did with eboue who i don`t rate at all), so if he kept Diarra happy, Flamini wouldn`t be missed.

Would be nice to get a change but he only ahd a year to go so you ould only sell him during the xfer window(but thatw ouldn`t be wise if you wanted to win the league).

You are right on the money regarding Diarra. Allowing him to leave at that age and when Flamini could possibly walk away on a free transfer was criminal.

Diarra is actually the better player and you had him tied down to a long term deal. Arsenal is always ready to sell disgruntled players because they are all about the money. If Diarra played at ManU and demanded to play, he would not be sold that quickly...he would have been rotting in the reserves.

Who says he isn´t good enough for Liverpool? If he wasn´t he wouldn´t be there and certainly wouldn´t be starting in a CL final and then the CL semifinal the next year. But anyway, you know my opnion no need to repeat it. It´s just Arsene´s way of managing versus the rotators Alex and Rafa.

But you have no need to worry. When Vieira went I never said Arsenal is done I thought "what does Arsene have up his sleeve?" And I´m thinking the same now because he doesn´t exactly seem worried.
