time looks very suspect.

if it is legit..and I mean legit that is incredibleI have to see him run under 10 seconds again....it is almost crazy that the time is correct especially so early in the track season.

not taking away from the young man's abilities eh..jes hard to comprehend the great improvement and the blzing time!

Sure the 100m title is often used as the marker for the fastest person, but having WR in other events does not diminish you status in the sport.

It's a known fact that the 100m event pays more dollars than other events. It's considered the main event of track and field but more to my point, it's extremely difficult to recover after competing in the 400m which limits the amount of races you can run on the circuit in Europe or anywhere else for that matters. A 100m sprinter can potentially run 2 or 3 races per week over the course of several weeks while a 400m sprinter would not be able to recover which means a lost of revenue. Furthermore, the event is the most watched so it's easier to approach and negotiate with sponsors.

All the top earners in the sport historically speaking have always been 100m sprinters. Distance runners realized their bread and butter come in the longer distances like 10k and marathon. .

You are correct in saying that the highest paid athletes on average are sprinters. However, if you are a world beater in most grand prix events you will get paid very well. For long period in the 1990s mj was only running the 400m and he was getting 80-100k to show up. Even today people like Isinbaeva and Vlašić get more money for appearance than most sprinters on the circuit. If Bolt runs the 400m and is in the top 3 in the world, I am sure he will get no less than what he is currently getting. Additionally, most top athletes don't run more than one meet in week (they don't need to they make enough). If you get less than 10k to show then you have to run more in a season.
If you are a star your team usually negotiate the appearance fee . That's why at some grand prix meets some shot putters get the same as sprinters and even more. For example, there is noway Micheal Frater can get more than Rese Hoffa (appearance fee that is)

I see your line of reasoning and agree on many fronts. In regards to Michael Johnson, he was an anomaly who is still the current world record holder at both events as I am sure you already know, his name was/is a brand that is world renown which resonates in most household. That said, I believe Bolt has the same type of potential as MJ and could dominate both 200m/400m events but if he's running 42 or low 43s then he will be running all by himself which would hurt him in his pocket. Jeremy Wariner has spent the last couple of years running the 200m because a lack of competition in his event only showing up at the championship to win. People in general love clashes which translate into dollars.

Do you recall the Donovan Bailey vs MJ clash over 150m which translated into 1.2mil purse?

The Carl Lewis and BJ rivalry that again translated into big dollars. They would specifically avoid competing against each other unless they were getting paid to so and when they do in places like Zurich, Japan etc. it's quite the pay day.

Tyson Gay, Usain Bolt and Asafa will not race each other until the games unless there is some huge money involved and people will pay. These sort of clashes in the 400m event don't exist at least I can't recall. The only 400m clash that comes to mind was supposed to be Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds and Michael Johnson but it never materialized. I am still disappointed to this day.

I think wariner can go sub 43 and and Leshawn merritt should run low 43 this year, and if Bolt was in the mix then things would be nice. Warniner and Merritt should be exciting! In order for warnienr to break mj record he has to get faster and hence the 200m focus i think.
On your last point, too bad Gay is not a nike athlete, because we would see both him and safa a the Nike prefontaine classic (all nike athletes are required to show up). The london grand prix has the money to bring both powell and gay together before the Olympics. we have to wait and see if it happens (safa is injured) both were going to collect 150k

I am getting excited thinking about Bolt in your mention possible match ups but after seeing Wariner dismantle Leshawn time and time again it's hard to envision. OMG, I can't phantom 42sec for anyone it's too much of a feat.

Yeah 42 is tough but if anyone can do Wariner can. Mj should have done it, his performances indicated that he was pace to do it, but when you are in a race where only you can go sub 44 the job is much harder.

Trini-

The 9.74 is not Bolt's first sub-10 100M, I seem to recall that late in the season he threw down a 9.89 or a time close to that..

that's not correct his pb from last year was 10.03, which he also equaled earlier this year. This is Bolt's 3rd 100m as a senior .
By the way his 9.76 equates to 9.84 basic. it is not unreasonable to think that a person with a 19.75 can run 9.8

BOLT TESTED!
Sprinter among athletes targeted by doping officials at JIIM
BY DANIA BOGLE Observer staff reporter bogled@jamaicaobserver.com
Monday, May 05, 2008

WHILE remaining tight-lipped on the exact number, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Medical and Doping Commission member, Dr Herb Elliott, said more than 20 doping tests were conducted at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIM) at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Random samples were taken, including those from the top three finishers in the men's 100m, in which Jamaica's Usain Bolt produced a blistering 9.76 seconds, a world leading time and the second fastest 100m in history.

The IAAF had more than doubled the minimum required doping tests for this year's fifth staging of the JIIM, which is an Area Permit Meeting.

Dr Elliott told the Observer that tests will be done for substances on the WADA prohibited substances list, most importantly Erythropoietin (EPO), anabolic steroids, stimulants, caffeine, cannabis and cocaine. All samples taken will be sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accredited lab in Montreal, Canada, and the results will then be passed on to the IAAF, which is based in Monaco.

"If there is a positive, we will hear, but there is a process and that is why you just can't give out results," Elliott said.

Meanwhile, Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown was comprehensively beaten by the USA's Bianca Knight, who won the event in 22.62secs in front of a stunned Kingston crowd, while Campbell-Brown finished second in 22.93 seconds.

Double sprint world champion, Tyson Gay, easily posted 20.00 seconds for his third straight 200m victory here.

Jamaica's World Championships finalists Christopher Williams (20.78) and Marvin Anderson (20.88) finished second and third, respectively.

Trinidadian born US 400m hurdler, Kerron Clement, posted a world-leading 47.79 seconds in winning the event ahead of Jamaica's 2004 Olympic Games silver medallist Danny McFarlane.

"I'm just staying focussed this year, which is a very important year for me," Clement told the Observer.

Lashinda Demus, the 2006 winner and meet record holder, claimed the women's 400m hurdles in 54.83 ahead of Jamaica's Shevon Stoddart (55.68) and Markita James of the USA (56.79).

Jamaica national champion, Sanjay Ayre, won the men's 400m in 45.68s with Costa Rica's Nery Brines second (45.78) and Michael Blackwood of Jamaica third (46.20).

Sanya Richards, the Jamaica-born US runner, timed 50.60 for the win in the women's 400m ahead of Jamaica's world champs bronze medallist, Novlene Williams (51.63) and Sonita Sutherland (52.94).

Defending Olympic champion, Joanna Hayes (12.72) was pressed by Jamaica's world champs bronze medallist Delloreen Ennis-London (12.75) in the women's 100m hurdles.

The USA's Antwon Hicks won the men's 110m hurdles in 13.21 with Aries Merritt in second 13.35 and 2004 Olympics finalist Maurice Wignall third in 13.63.

Jonathon Johnson of the USA won the men's 800m in a time of 1 minute 47.51secs ahead of teammate Karjuan Williams (1:48.02), while the USA's Hazel Clark won the women's equivalent in 2:02.40, with Guyana's Marion Burnett second in 2:02.98 and Korine Hinds third in 2:03.52.

Bolt is probably the best athlete in history.
I told my bredren a year ago that Bolt is more gifted than Asafa but he didn`t believe.

I don`t think he cn have any doubts now.

Absolutely not!

Ato is too smart for that!

Besides he is a multi millionaire and could/would have paid for his own drugs.

Come on now!

I am not putting my head on a block for anyone, but I do not believe for a minure that Ato Boldon was on drugs of any kind when he was sprinting.

If evidence to the contrary comes up, then I will be forced to deal with that...but lets wait on May 19th and we wills ee the truth emerge.

If he was using then he must pay. But I have no reason to believe that he was...and he has told me personally that he has never been dirty..I believe him.

I also do not believe that Asafa and Bolt are on drugs either...I am not convinced of Bolt's time though, and for it to be legit I need to see him do it again....or run close to it again. That does not say that I think Bolt is not an exceptional athlete though, but for Gary to say he is better than Asafa is ah damn joke.

No Pal.
It ain`t no joke. Asafa is the best sprinter ever(over the 100m) But Bolt is arguably the best allround sprinter in history period.

And yes Don Quarrie, who knows a bit about sprinting, says Bolt can even do better.
Only Herb Mackenly was comparable to Bolt. He made it to 100, 200 and 400 olympic finals.
Bolt can actually win in all those event(maybe not at one olympics though).

Believe it, Bolt can become the best ever sportsman too.

And regarding Bolt`s time in the 100?

If you reflect on the World Chamionships where Gatlin won the double, Bolt was leadoing Gatlin over the entre field over the first 100 m from lane 1.

He also stayed with Gay in the recent world champs too.

He always had the natural speed, and now that he has been training for the 100, you see get what you see.

If you can run 19.93 at age 17, 45.35 at age 16 , 10.2 at age 15, 9.76 at age 21 isn`t impossible.

Quite so.
