Why I stayed published: Saturday | May 3, 2008
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Two weeks ago a man wiping windows at the Devon House stoplight punched my window when I asked him not to wipe my windscreen. Before I could react, another motorist came to my rescue. Another day and another stoplight (Molynes and Boulevard intersection), I was in my car feeling quite despondent when a motorist going through the filter light pulled up beside me and said "Smile nuh man?" then sped off to catch his filter light.
My point is this; I could have migrated to any of the countries I had visited before and would have lived a 'better' life. I am no patriot - no more than the next guy and would leave in a heartbeat provided that I could be guaranteed that ever so often I would have at my disposal the Jamaican spirit that these two motorists demonstrated.
Perhaps I am not desperate enough to consider 'greener pastures'. Desperation is relative as it is dependent on what one is desperate to achieve, be it basic sustenance, increased acreage or larger bank balances. Further, desperation to any degree is a global condition and I find that though I could and would achieve material gains overseas, my Jamaican soul would despair.
New accent
When I was 14 years old, I spent two months overseas. When I returned home, I had a new accent, gained 10 extra pounds and felt disconnected and slightly un-Jamaican. It took me a good four months to return to my true nature. Maybe it was a bad combination of youth, lack of exposure and all the fish and chips I ate.
I will continue to stay in my country for my sake and my son's sake. He deserves to experience the awesomeness of being Jamaican and appreciating his heritage. If we leave, it would be because this rock ceased to be the Jamaica of my mother's and my grandfather's times when you could take the neighbour's clothes off her line because it looked like the rain would come; where people still helped children and old people cross the street, even if they were going in the opposite direction.
Do you know that you can still drive through the countryside and stop at a jerk stand and chat with the patrons for hours and forget that you were on your way to the beach? A Jamaica where I can go to church three times a week, if I wanted to, and praise my God without hindrance.
Apart from the occasional Florida run to visit family and view their robotic lifestyle, this Jamaican life is what I want my son to experience. I pray that amidst this intrusive globalization process, we do not lose ourselves in another man's culture.

I can definitely relate. Most of my family are in England or the USA. For years they keep imploring me to leave Jamaica. They assert that with my talent I would be very successful and would be well off financially. I declined all offers.
I love Jamaica and I want to help to elevate my country. I keep an optimistic outlook. I know one day things will get better. But if we all leave then this rock will be lost forever. Some persons have to stay and help. I dont buy this remitance crap. It does more bad than good. If money was the sole object of life. Suppose the goverment print money and give everyone and people from overseas send pure money back home, how will that help the country? My life cannot be for myself alone. I have build a foundation for future Jamaicans including my unborn child so that one day this rock will be prosperous. A generation has to make the sacrifice and build. We cant reap corn if we dont sew the seed. I dont want to reep another mans corn. The ancestors of rich country lay the foundation for the prosperity of their country. When are we going to do the same?

Zilla, I once thought "things will get better" also, but no chance of it. The powers that be won't allow it.
World economies are tied together and what is happening in JA and in all third world countries -big and small, is on schedule.

I had an interesting conversation with a 15 yr old kid who plays soccer. He isnt the most talented player i have seen at 15 but his exposure and experience is remarkable, and it gave me some insight into a few things. Appartently this kid has trained with AC Milan youth team for the summer of '06 and last year was at Madrid Youth Academy. He did the brazil tour and this year he will be playing in Argentina. I dont know if he plays for the states but he also met the players from both Milan and watch the derby. He was also featured on some magazine. Appartently he has good contacts and it doesnt hurt that his father is some soap opera star. But with all of that said, i thought what if a yardie got his exposure ? And obviously how to get into his circle ? He father plays and is the one that inspired him .. he is a good player but i have seen Yardie at 12 playing better than him just of raw talent. He said 2 funn things 1. That against flamengo young team its like you dont hear the players running so you cant tell which angle they are coming from ( its obviously a lie) and also that once you touch the ball 3 players jump on you . But his yrs of exposure made me say to myself that exactly want we should be hearing out of a Yardie in a few yrs. Globalization of the JFF and not just to england. What made me smile is when he said clubs are assisting clubs from other countries ??? Hmmm so JFF start writing letters out we might not get the big clubs but a start is a start.

A plea from the ghetto published: Wednesday | May 14, 2008
The Editor, Sir:
My name is Shashauny Smith, a student at Calabar High School. I am writing this letter as an appeal from the ghetto people in Jamaica. It hurts my heart to see ghetto people suffer because of insufficient funds. Sometimes, they are forced to engage in gambling activities to maintain a style of living. Any help given to them will be greatly appreciated.
No work opportunity
In the ghetto, people have needs like all the others areas in Jamaica, but they are unable to afford some little things in life. Many people are willing to work but are not provided with the opportunity. In some cases, children in the ghetto are deprived and often do not perform well in school. We see them in society, begging money and cleaning the windscreens of vehicles.
The people in the ghetto are very kind to each other, something missing in society today. They are caring and willing to work together. They protect each other, although this is not always good and they stand up for each other. In the ghetto, they live as one.
I am, etc.,
SHASHAUNY SMITH

On my last visit back home I was driving down Old Hope Rd early one Friday morning whn a young man with an earphone listening to music crossed my path. He was modestly dressed, no bling, and coming from the direction of the gully bank. I dont know if he had a job to go to that day to collet his pay, or had any breakfast that day, and it might have been to early for a spliff, but he went bopping merrily along his way. And I thought to myself that that was the true spirit of Jamaica I missed when I am away. In the big, rich cities of the West you see so many miserable people on ther way to work that this guy just seemed to be saying "the sun is shining and I am alive and there is hope". Long live the true Jamaican spirit.
