Simoes eyes Under-20 skipper Cousins By Howard Walker Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com Wednesday, January 09, 2008
National Under-20 captain Ricardo Cousins's dream of representing his country at the senior level may well become a reality after technical director Rene Simoes singled him out as one for the future. COUSINS... led Young Reggae Boyz to Pan-Am silver
Simoes, in addressing journalists on his arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport on Saturday, said he was impressed with Cousins at last year's Pan American Games in Brazil.
Said Simoes: "I saw one player, his name is Cousins. I saw on television he did great things in the Maracana Stadium. I was very impressed how a player can go to Maracana (one of the largest stadiums in the world) and play like that.
"This boy must have some quality. And I believe there are other ones here. We have to encourage them and say, 'hey show up, we are here to look at you'," added Simoes.
Cousin led the young Reggae Boyz to silver medal, losing 1-2 to Ecuador in the final after knocking off Haiti (4-0), Argentina (2-0), Colombia (1-0) and Mexico (5-4 on penalties).
Cousins, 20, in an earlier interview with the Observer, made his intentions clear in catching the eye of Simoes even before the technical director arrived in Jamaica.
The former Glenmuir student had just scored a peach of a freekick that enabled Portmore United to edge Tivoli Gardens 1-0 in the first end-of-round final.
Cousins said he has a plan - just continue to score - and hopes that his exploits on the field will woo the new technical director. Said Cousins then: "My thought and motivation is that Rene Simoes will be here, so I have to put myself in a position where he can look at me and give me a chance, so I am working on it.
"I am in great form now and I will continue to work hard," said Cousins, who has scored six goals in the last six games.
But little did he know that Simoes already had him under the radar, having caught the eye of the Brazilian as far back as six months ago.

Young footballer with good club and international youth experience, Simoes just need to polish the diamond and make sure he is mentally prepared for the next level.

I have been telling you all that Cousins is the best talent locally and not Hue, now that Simoes is big on Cousins I hope you all become beleivers. The kid has a balance game and not just flashes of brilliance. This kid is going to give JA 10 solid years providing good health.

My sources and what i've seen from videos provided from 'lionpaw' he looks like a young Andy Bomber Williams. That in deed is a good sign except i hope he runs harder than the Bomber does.

there is one youth that plays for PMU in the holding midfield fole that played in jamaicas last match.I know Simoes will like him too as he plays similar to Chris Dawes and Simoes was big on Dawes. He scored a thunderous kick in that JA game.

Cousins looking to make opportunity count published: Thursday | January 17, 2008
Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter
Cousins
National Under-20 captain and central midfielder Ricardo Cousins has big dreams. And, his dreams of representing Jamaica at the senior level in the World Cup qualifying campaign, and, hopefully, the World Cup Finals in South Africa in 2010 may become a reality if his plans of wooing technical director of Jamaica's national football programme, René Simoes, are properly executed.
"I have been working hard over the years while hoping that someone would see my performance and give me a chance," Cousins said.
"Simoes says he has been looking at me from I played at the Pan American Games. I will continue to work hard and not by promises, but to work my way into the team. The next friendly game on February 6 (against Costa Rica), I think I will be given a chance to represent my country at the National Stadium. I will try and make use of it and make my debut," he said.
Impressive performance
Cousins, who led Jamaica's Under-20 Reggae Boyz at last year's Pan-Am Games in Brazil, helped to create history as Jamaica became only the second Caribbean nation to win a silver medal in the 56-year history of the quadrennial competition.
Jamaica lost 1-2 to Ecuador in the final after knocking off Haiti (4-0), Argentina (2-0), Colombia (1-0) and Mexico (5-4 on penalties).
After his performance during these games, Simoes, a Brazilian native who was home at the time, singled him out as one for the future.
"I may be impressed with a particular player here and then I go to another game and I see a better performance from another player. So, it's too close to call at this time," Simoes said.
However, Linval Dixon, former Reggae Boyz defender and currently coach of Cash Plus Premier League (CPPL) second-place club, Portmore United, Cousins' home team for the last three years, was confident that he would be drafted into the national squad.
"Cousins is a prospect for the national team. He is an extremely good all-round player and his chances of making it into the national squad are great. He has good qualities, not only as a player, but also as an individual," Dixon said.
Looking to rebound
Cousins, who was also the captain of Glenmuir High's winning daCosta Cup team in 2004, actually led the pack in the CPPL earlier this season with six goals, but fell back after sustaining a knee injury.
"I have been out for two games because of injury, but I am looking to rebound on Sunday and try to get back in the numbers," he said. "I play in the midfield and most of the goalscorers that are above me in the standings are forwards. I feel that if I had played the last two games I would be on the same level or above them

Ricardo Cousins got another run last night and hopefully PMU sends him out on loan or training stint to raise his level of play.

Are we taking care of our top youths?
How many matches for club/country has Ricardo Cousins played for Portmore and Jamaica since July 2007?
It must be approaching 50+ matches.
