Boyz win again Blank Guatemala 2-0 at 'The Office' Howard Walker, Observer writer walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com Thursday, November 22, 2007

TWO first-half goals by Ricardo Fuller and Omar Daley in the 10th and 22nd minutes propelled Jamaica to a convincing 2-0 win over Guatemala in their international friendly at the National Stadium last night.
The Reggae Boyz were scoring their second win inside "The Office" in four days as the new Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) administration kick-started their preparation for the 2010 World Cup campaign.
The Jamaicans, just as they did against El Salvador on Sunday, took control early and never looked back.
Daley broke free in the second minute down the right flank, but his cross was well held by goalkeeper Luis Molina. Two minutes later, Luton Shelton got the first real chance of opening the scoring but he headed down into the ground and over the bar.
But it didn't take the Reggae Boyz much longer to open the scoring. Fuller charged down a defender and showed good pace before chipping over the advancing goalkeeper Molina in the 10th minute.
Jamaica continued to dominate and Christopher Jackson and Demar Phillips combined well down the left flank to open up the Guatemala backline, but Jackson's searching cross couldn't find a Reggae Boy.
Striker Shelton was replaced by Dane Richards in the 20th minute after picking up a knock earlier.
However, the fans didn't have to wait long, as in the 22nd minute the impressive Austin found Daley down the right flank and the Bradford City midfielder cut inside his defender before calmly firing home to double Jamaica's lead.
Richards, who plays for New York Red Bull in the USA, showed good pace and skill and may have thought he earned a penalty in the 27th minute, but the referee didn't think so.
Central midfielder Oneil Thomspon then dragged a left-footer wide from just outside the box, then Richards found himself with a free header and couldn't hit the target from a Daley corner kick.
The half ended 2-0 as Guatemala offered very little in offence.
A Thompson header in the 51st minute from a corner kick, sailed across the goal to kick start the second period. Goodison on his 35th birthday picked up a yellow card in the 59th minute after getting entangled with Serlvin Motta. He was later substituted four minutes later in the 63rd minute.
It ended a decent comeback by the veteran defender. Richards, whose pace troubled the Guatemalan defence all night, broke free down the right flank and played a perfect ball into the path of Phillips, who miraculously kicked high from close range. It should have been 3-0.
Moments later, Austin's pile-driver whistled just wide of the upright. Every time Austin collects the ball, the crowd buzzed with expectation of a torrid shot after he made his mark with a tremendous goal on Sunday against El Salvador.

The three CPPL-based players, Oneil Thompson, Rudolph Austin, Christopher Jackson, had solid(5/10) matches. Once again Rudolph Austin is ready for another level.

Reggae Boyz down Guatemala in international friendly published: Thursday | November 22, 2007

THE REGGAE Boyz continued to restore their status in international football with their second victory over a Central American opponent inside four days, blanking Guatemala 2-0 in a wet friendly at the National Stadium last night.
At 'The Office', where they were impregnable while building a reputation just over a decade ago, Ricardo Fuller (10th) and Omar Daley (22nd) scored for the Jamaicans, whose FIFA ranking had slipped more than 50 places to an all-time low 103, as the country remained largely inactive and played without most of its top players, who are based overseas under professional contracts.
They played their first match since June 2 on Sunday and scored an emphatic 3-0 win over El Salvador.
Jamaica got out of the blocks quickly and forced the Guatemalans back into their defensive third with some speedy and forceful attacking play.
Dangerous crosses
They succeeded in getting in two dangerous crosses from the right, the first from Omar Daley, which was picked off by the goalkeeper, and the next by Ricardo Fuller, who picked out striker partner Luton Shelton with pinpoint accuracy at goalmouth. However, to the disappointment of the more than 15,000 spectators, his side-footed effort bounced into the turf then over the bar.
With Jamaica pressing relentlessly the promise finally came to fruition when Ricardo Fuller scored in the 10th minute. The goal emanated from a long ball from sweeper Shavar Thomas which was turned on with the outside of the boot for Fuller. Guatemala's Yony Flores miscued an attempted clearance into the path of Fuller, who shrugged off a defender and then bore down at unprotected goalkeeper Luis Motta, who had to commit. Fuller then skilfully chipped the ball over his body.
In the 22nd minute, Rudolph Austin lifted a perfect pass behind the defence for Daley to get a free run at goal from the right flank. He drifted inside and with an open shot, shaped to kick before cutting inside a fully committed defender, then placed a grounder neatly into the far side of the goal to double Jamaica's lead at the 22nd minute.
Guatemala had to do some-thing t the flow, as they appeared headed for a big loss. They made two substitutions which were able to improve their play, especially after the rains subsided by the 25th minute.

Good result for the ReggaeBoyz. They played well in patches and I thought today's performance was better than Sunday's. Players performance from my perspective:
Dane Richards may have proven that he can cut at the international level.
Ricardo Fuller played team today and led from the front. He scored a nice goal.
Rudy Austin looked solid and may be the reincarnation of Winston "Twinny Bug" Anglin (hopefully the trouble free Anglin).
Demar Philipps also played well although he missed a sitter he ran hard for the entire game.
Oneil Thompson is making a name for himself but it would be wise if he not play around with the leather in his defensive third.
Omar Daley making that right side of the field a headache for the permanent coach of the Boyz, whomever that may be.
Tyrone Marshall looked awful in the first half but performed better when moved to a more central position.
Pepe Goodison proved that he still has it, though his out-a-mi-life approach reared it's head on a few occasions.
Shavar Thomas did not do much wrong and I hope his substitution was not injury related.
Christopher Jackson did not do anything that would have me singing his praises or calling for his head at this moment.
Luton Shelton looked like he came to play but injury cut his time short.
Demar Stewart did not look too comfortable out there.
Ricardo Geddes (25) looked like he was way out of his league and may have blown his chance at being a regular invitee to the squad.
Sean Frasier came on and had a few nice touches and the same can be said of Wolry Wolfe.
Donovan Ricketts did not have much to do but I guess a few people were not happy with his long clearances up field.
Coach Tappa might well be stamping his style on this team, they seemed willing to pass the ball around and appeared intent on attacking. Coach Tappa might give this administration something to think about. For example, dropping the interim tag and letting the young coach loose on CONCACAF.
Decent size turn-out at "De Office". Could have been better with better weather.

Once again I was impressed with Austin and Phillips, especially on set pieces. My impression of Marshall and Goodison......ummmmm, ummmmm, they looked similar to the 2006 campaign.

Do you think that will change when Simoes takes over ?
No doubt that will have to change after he comes. These two games were more of a morale boaster than anything else. Bringing back Tyrone and Pepe can help by having some experience but eventually by qualifications are over they will have to hand it over to the likes of Claude and dem.
I see Pepe staying longer though Tyrone was caught watching a few times, its almost like he saw what he needed to do but just couldn't react or physically complete the move that he mentally had.
Still ah win is ah win and mi will tek an ugly victory over a pretty defeat - ah jus so mi stay.

Great objective analysis. Keeping it positive and without the personal attacks.
I hope Luton is ok. Anybody have any reports on him?

When the games get tougher in WC qualifying Marshall and Goodison will have to step aside for Nosworthy and Davis, they are both still decent players but have lost a step you want your best battling in the final round assuming we are there.

Shavar Thomas looked solid at the back....in regards claude and nyron, they need to get into mix ASAP because it takes longer for defenders to play together.

Jamaica's Ricardo Fuller chips the ball over Guatemala's goalkeeper Luis Molina to score the opening goal in their international friendly at the National Stadium last night. - Ricardo Makyn
MAGICAL dribbling and clinical finishing by Ricardo Fuller and Omar Daley last night handed Jamaica a 2-0 victory over Guatemala as the Reggae Boyz ticked off their second straight victory inside 'The Office', following Sunday's 3-0 win over El Salvador.
Guatemala were plunged two goals down after 22 minutes as Fuller opened the scoring in the 10th and Daley doubled the tally 12 minutes later.
Pouncing on a half clearance 40 yards on the right side of midfield, Fuller sped into the box with central defender Gustavo Cabrera hot on his heels.
The in-form Stoke City forward spotted goalie Pedro Molina racing off his line and neatly chipped the ball over the advancing 'keeper to put the Reggae Boyz up 1-0.
The crowd of 15,000 supporters inside the National Stadium did not have to wait long before Daley had them on their feet, dicing his way into the box and firing past Molina after collecting a long ball floated to the right flank by Rudolph Austin in midfield.
Speaking through an interpreter, Guatemalan coach Hernan Dario Gomez, a former Colombian national player and manager, said he was extremely upset after the loss and apologised after having to be coaxed into participating in the post-match press conference.
"Congratulations to the Jamaican team. I have been around the world and they are very good," he said.
"Jamaica was superior in every aspect for the entire game. We're going to use this game to make some changes in the team," he added, no doubt referring to CONCACAF qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, which starts early next year.
Third minute
Following their 0-1 loss against Honduras in Miami on Saturday night, Guatemala, who placed third behind the United States and Mexico at the 2007 Gold Cup, again employed the 4-5-1 formation.
Similar to their loss in Miami, it was again down the flanks which bothered the Guatemalans most, and was evident from as early as the third minute when Molina was called on to deny Daley on the right at his near post.
No less than two minutes later, Daley sent a high cross to the left for striker Luton Shelton running into the box but his header bobbed over the bar after bouncing in front of the goal.
The Sheffield United striker didn't spend much time on the field after that as he was substituted injured in the 21st minute, with the speedy Dane Richards taking his place.
Richards showed good skill and pace and gave midfielder Demar Phillips what should have been Jamaica's third goal four minutes from time, sending the perfect ball inside the box from the right flank.
However, the former Waterhouse midfielder failed to keep his cool, with only the keeper to beat, and scooped his effort high over the bar.
Guatemala, ranked 100th by FIFA, three places above Jamaica, who they have never beaten, were clearly outclassed, forcing Gomez to make early attacking changes, which bore no fruit.
Their best effort was called off-side in the 24th minute, when Lester Ruiz's strong header was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Ricketts, making a reflex save.
