Burrell promises more matches at 'The Office' Thursday, October 04, 2007
Incoming president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Captain Horace Burrell has promised a "new dawning" in Jamaica's football when he takes office on Monday, November 5.
"In exactly one month, our football will see a new day, and as a new administration we're fired up and raring to go," Burrell said yesterday in delivering the keynote address at the launch of the Ocean Spray Richie Stevens Pot of Gold football competition at Hilton Kingston Hotel.
But Burrell cautioned football-loving Jamaicans that taking football back to its glory years won't be easy. However, he said the job can be accomplished if all parties work together.
"The task is not going to be easy, so we're asking for the support of the public, private sector, government and the football fraternity, and with their help, we will be ready for the challenge," said the FIFA executive member, who was credited with guiding Jamaica to their first World Cup in France in 1998 while he was JFF boss.
Burrell, who lost to outgoing JFF president Crenston Boxhill back in the voting congress in 2003, said he is ready to recommence the nation's football journey and urged fans that they can "go out from now and purchase their yellow-and- green jerseys" as he promised more games at 'The Office'.
"Our football lives when the 5th of November comes will not be the same," the charismatic principal of the Captain's Bakery chain of stores said.
Burrell will walk back to his old job after the November 4 congress in Negril, as he goes to the polls unopposed after Boxhill withdrew from the race.
"I am heartened that we're now united... and that the vast majority of the parishes nominated me for president is a signal of their belief and trust in my leadership," Burrell noted.
Boxhill's administration has been under pressure from detractors early on after taking office, and the pressure mounted after failing to qualify a team to any of FIFA's world tournaments.
Meanwhile, a record 37 teams, up from 35, will contest this season's 10th staging of the Ocean Spray-sponsored Richie Stephens Pot of Gold football competition in Westmoreland. The winners will collect $30,000 more than the $70,000 which Harmony Town received after beating One-Ten 1-0 in the final last year.
The runners-up will pocket $50,000, up from $35,000. For the first time in the competition, the third- and fourth-placed finishers will collect cash prizes of $20,000 and $10,000, respectively. The most disciplined team will get $30,000 - up from $10,000 - courtesy of Fontana Pharmacy.
President of the Westmoreland FA, Everton Tomlinson, revealed plans to refurbish the Llandilow Sports Complex, with a view to renaming the facility The Richie Stephens Sports Complex in recognition of the charitable work the reggae artiste has been doing in the parish over the years.

... hehe ... It should of been a picture of Bora and Burrell.
Yes Carter... Its tru. They will eventually need games, but they have to sort out so many other things first and until then, those games seem just a waste.

Ahhhh Burrell the saviour. Boxhill has done a remarkable job to bring Burrell back considering he only got the job because Jamaica generally wanted anybody in Burrell´s place due to his complacency. People don´t rely on your short memories focusing on Boxhill´s failures, Burrell wasn´t exactly a wonderkid with friendlies either, he simply got complacent and Jamaica paid very dearly for it Who did we play in friendlies leading during the 2001 Hexagonal. Do you not remember we were playing the Bull Bay XI while Honduras and other were in Copa America? We couldn´t get friendlies for whatever reason until Burrell saw his comfy spot as JFF President under threat then all of a sudden a friendly with Brazil in England. Why couldn´t he get lesser but useful opposition while we were trying to get the World Cup again? This is just a reminder of why the majority of the ites wanted him out so don´t be looking at him as some victim who never got his due respect, he did and then got complacent and blew it. I hope he learns from that mistake. Til then....talk is cheap Burrell!!! I wonder what is worse, arranging friendlies and not being competent enough to make sure they happen or having all the resources and contacts and not even getting the friendly proposal in the first place. Choose your poison.

So, what's your poison Rdevil? Many have come to realized that Burrell on his worst day was better than Boxhill on his best. And, I am no fan of Burrell either. I would have rather seen someone else at the helm but for now that's all we have.
Boxhill and company's trademark incompetence has let Burrell's return appears to be like the messiah...The second coming.
That's a good one Jt! That's Burrell dusting off Bora...He is another joker!

I agree with this post, I would prefer someone other than Burrel to come in but we have no choice now.

My poison? Jack Warner I guess. Like I said Boxhill has done some job to have Burrell in the position he is in now. But with no choice outside of Burrel I think we are ok taking the guy who has the ability but we have to hope he doesn´t kick back like last time he had the job.

Horace Burrell's competence on a mangerial level is very much questionable, there are obvious questions regarding business ethics, practices, accounting procedures, foresight, planning and organizational skills. The only thing that he has working for him is that he was "in charge" when we qualified for WC98, the fact that he got complacent and felt that no matter he did he would always be in the job added to the disgust the public had for him. He simply got too boasie to do any real work.
Hopefully this time around the people in the organization (jff) are actually capable in of them selves, if there is a system of how to get things done, then who ever is at the head will not be able to solely decide the fate of our football program.
We can only hope that he does not follow the same path that his old friend jack warner has, where he gets us to the big show only to rob us blind while we are too giddy to realize it.

alright Fan4life,you forget to add something to Burrell's resume i.e Soccer Diplomacy(negotiater). When you have a man that link up with the Brazilian Federation or have contacts to Brazilian soccer there is hopes...+ FIFA President and Vice President linkage,Government Linkage(Army contributions and expertise,Stadiums etc),even the very organizers of the World cup 2010 Captain Burrell is associated with....
Firstly,Brazil can Field up to 800 Team to get results,Jamaica can only Field one to get the best result in Qualifiers, hence playing brazilian 2nd and 3rd devision teams is like playing the national teams of Honduras,Guatemala,T&T or even Costa Rica...
Thus,Burrell coming back he have that avenue to take which I think is better than to carrying Big name teams that run the risk of devalued rankings. The army which Burrell use to earn a livelihood from can play a role...remember the simoes era? and we can have access to the Stadium because Insport is not currently using them.
Burrell Fan4life as you know is also a member of the FIFA deciplinary commitee so alot of people hold him in high regard, He's a Diplomat and that's the most crucial ingredient to make World Cup Qualifiers or even Olympic Qualifiers lest harsh.
Inshort my friend Burrell is not clueless,he's a Diplomat in every meaning of the word.Only Jack Warner is beyond him right now in the Caribbean and Horace Reid have all what the job requires to even make him self a candidate in time to come.

Yes Dutty Rock Burrell has contacts in Brazil, FIFA etc. however this just underscores my point above that his fall was of his own doing rather than by losing to some standout candidate. He has all these contacts so is it that he couldn´t get us good friendly games during the hexagonal or that he just didn´t bother to thinking he had Jamaica in the palm of his hand? I still wonder if it worse that he had the resources in his hands and didn´t do what was necessary to get us the practice ahead of key qualifying matches or to be a Boxhill and try to get games but makes amateurish mistakes and having the games called off. We didn´t even get games called off during the 2001 Hexagonal, there was just no life. Burrell is better than Boxhill by far in terms of contacts but Boxhill only got a chance because Burrell royally screwed up. And that´s what is scary the history of waste.

we dont need diplomacy. We need an administrator. A manager. A football association president.. But not a diplomat..
