Boyz rout Aruba 5-0, advance Friday, September 14, 2007 Jamaica........................................................5 Davis ( 15th), Vernon (19th, 76th), Campbell (64th, 65th) Aruba............................................................0
ORANJESTAD, Aruba - Jamaica wrapped up their CFU Group B Olympic qualifying tournament here with a 5-0 win over hosts Aruba at the Complehjo Deportivo Guillermo Trinidad last night.
A brace each from Eric Vernon and Edward Campbell led the Jamaica scoring to ensure that they advance to the next stage of the qualifiers where they will meet Group F winners Bahamas or either Haiti, St Kitts and the Domican Republic from Group D.
Donovan Davis scored the Under-23s' other goal in the 15th minute.
Coach Wendell Downswell was pleased with the team's overall play.
"Tactically, I believe that we played one of the most tactical games so far. I was particularly pleased with the whole team organisation and shape and of course we have seen a lot of improvement in the decision making... we actually used this game as the start of preparation for the next round," he said.
Jamaica's first serious threat on goal came in the 12th minute when Bryan Bayliss slithered inside from the right to unleash a left-footed shot, but goalkeeper Eric Abdul was well-placed to gather the ball.
Three minutes later, the junior Reggae Boyz put their name on the score sheet when Troy Smith's delightful left-side cross picked out Davis lurking in the centre, and the latter's control with the chest and one-time left-footer from 17 yards was a piece of art.
The Boyz continued their dominance and it came as no surprise when they doubled their tally in the 19th minute. The speedy and diminutive Vernon outsped his pursuers down the right flank to bury a firm shot that hit the far upright before spinning across the line.
Again, Jamaica continued their dance routines in the opponents, half of the pitch. In the 43rd minute another slick move by the Jamaicans almost spawn another goal, but Vernon's well-struck grounder with the left boot from 16 yards crashed violently onto the upright and behind for a goal kick. Fifteen minutes into the resumption there was a lull in goalmouth excitement, and when it appeared that this calm would persist, a delightful passing sequence between Keammar Daley and Vernon spurred the Jamaican spectators, but they failed in the end to get the ball in the goal.
In the 59th minute, the Jamaicans were threatening again, and were it not for outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Adbul, Xavian Virgo's scorcher from 25 yards would have counted.
But five minutes later Jamaica were in the money when Edward Campbell fired home from just inside the area to make the score 3-0. And like a man possessed, the youngster got his second of the evening with a superb lob from 20 yards after a long clearance from the Jamaican custodian, Dwayne Miller.
In the 76th minute midfielder Vernon, who has been a thorn in the flesh of clueless Aruba, got his second when he darted into the area to beat the 'keeper with an effortless chip shot.
The opening game of the double-header saw Antigua/Barbuda clipping Barbados 2-1 with goals from Jamari Roberts and Tavin Crump to finish on six points behind Jamaica. Daryl Ferguson responded for Barbados.
