Added to this the man turn up and run 9.74 weeks after suffering degradation and humilation, including some of the meanest comments from some of the people who once sang his praises.

That's probably the case. 2 years ago at the Prefontiane classic Asafa failed to run through the line and Gatlin won the race with a dip, because of Asafa's customary easing up. I can't imagine coach Francis allowing him to ease up in training. Of course he probably does not follow instructions all the time.
He needs to practice running through the tape. He'll continue to disapoint unless he gets that stuff down. He should start thinking of his legacy. Does he want to be known as the fastest man in the world who never won a race when it counted the most.

I'm out.....
Do you know how many times Asafa ran against Gay and what is his record head to head vs Gay?
Don't quote me on it but I believe Asafa has raced Gay 5 times and lost the one time it really mattered. One of his victories over Gay was when he equalled his own record of 9.77
He beat Gay all of last year(2006) but lost to him the one time they ran against each other this year.
Gay is Powell's most serious threat and Asafa needs to race Gay as much as possible before the next Olys. You never know! The USA might find another 'Gay', no pun intended.
Yeah. The money matters, but unless he can get somehow get his confidence right, I would hate to have him wait until the Olympics to find out where he stands with Gay, because he would still have that doubt.
He needs to just take the $50,000 and link him at that upcoming meet. Can you imagine if they raced again and Gay beat himn again? He needs to get that Gay guy off his back. Ah bwoy.... There is a football player at FSU with the last name "Fagg," I believe. It must have been tough for him growing up.

No yu nuh Shaggy..I don't think he should settle for the $50K because he is the WR holder. Thus ,he should be paid more unless he loses his status
Actually, it is his status that is the problem, just not the WR status. As I understand it, the agreement he had with them was (since he was already the WR holder) $100k if he became World Champion. We all know what happened with that.
Because he lost, they said he was not entitled to the $100k and I think they are right. $50k for the WC and $50k for the WR sounds fair enough. Him need to just take it and gwaan until he proves himself.

No let them stay with their $50k- every year somebody win a gold at the championship- it is not every year somebody break or equal a world record- they are not equal- $100k mi seh
Enlighten- put it this way " we probably wont see another human do that time. Think about it, since the inception of man-kind only one human (or should ONE say superhuman) have ever run that time (9.74). There have been many world champions like you said but only ONE "FASTEST MAN EVER" Big up to Asafa...history will remember you so forget about the negatives. Bob Marley's musics was not appreciated a yard so you are in good company.
Proud of Asafa. He is the best ever. I didn`t see a Jamaican on that prestigious list before , apart from Bailey. so its a phenomenal acheievement. i don`t think anyone has run it 4 times and is the only one to break his own WR.
Simply put, he is faster than any who have ever lived.
He appears to have a mental problem though and I will be very disappointed if his coaching and management staff doesn`t get the help he needs.
I think that help is available on the planet but unless asafa or his staff, go and get it, we will continue suffering disappointment of seeing the fastest ever human underacheiving.
Asafa is an all time great. He is doing what hundreds of Athletes could never do.

Asafa Powell's quote from the Associated Press (September 10, 2007):
Quote:
"I worked a lot after the disappointment in Osaka to correct all my mistakes. I was much more fluid," said Powell, who had run 9.77 three times. "Zero tension, zero pressure."
Keep the analysis coming Jengs. Your insight and knowledge of track is appreciated by people like me that are huge fans, but lack the thorough understanding of the intricate details.
I Asafa ran like Greene or Gatlin he could not be stopped. Asafa has more of a Jesse Owens type style. His stride is not the longest, but he is a little taller, so it works for him. He reaches his stride quicker than some of those guys.
