Well, this is going to make a lot of people upset. This shows he could have easily beaten Gay. Congrats to him still! Hold that steam for the Olympics!

I really wonder what his motivation is. The meet official in Zürich did not want to pay him the 100k. Now he is going to get 100k just for breaking the record (if it is ratified) from the IAAF, plus I think it is 50k bonus from the meet officials in Rieti, and Nike has to pay either 100k or 250k depending on the type of contract you have.

going to need to get a sports phsychologist. Perhaps Ms Richards who worked with the Jamaican cricket team that won the Caribbean titles. Right after they terminated her services Jamaica fell away.

Nope it does not the conditions where he ran today could have been very ideal fuh sprinting

safa runs 9.78 in the finals. 2 9.7 in one day is amazing! the final is more impressive, no head wind

I agree with Jengs that though Powell's achievement is a monumental one (the 100 meters world record is probably the most prestigious in all sports), performing in this meet in this fashion instead of in the world title events will cause some people to believe he cannot perform under pressure. I hope he dispels these beliefs in Beijing next year. The world would like to see Gay and Powell maximizing their abilities in Beijing, where their performances would be recorded in legend -- the stage does not get higher than the Olympic Games.

To sum up what Asafa did: he broke the official world record which was 9.77 in the heats. In the final he ran 9.78 with no wind which is quicker than the heats which gives him a basic time (when controlling for wind and altitude) of 9.79, making it the fastest basic run ever better than Mo Greene's 9.80

Powell smashes 100m world record

Powell was back to his best after his Oaska disappointment
Jamaican Asafa Powell broke the world 100m record by clocking 9.74 secs at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rieti.
Powell, the bronze medallist at the recent World Championships, set the new record in the second of two heats.

The race was run with a strong following wind but it was within the limits set by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

"That's what happens when I start to listen to the coach," said Powell, who appeared to ease up before the line.

He first set the previous record of 9.77 in Athens in June 2005 and last year equalled it on two occasions in Gateshead and Zurich.
