I think he's on trial at Stoke City, after being recommended by Ricci Fuller?

Is he a good player? Not sure if he'd get a UK work permit though - he hasn't played enough National Team games, has he?

If he's half as good as Ricci, he'll do well.

BREAKING NEWS: HOME OFFICE BLOCK STOKE SIGNING AUSTIN
1 reader has commented on this story. Click here to read their views.

Stoke have failed in a bid to sign Jamaican international Rudolph Austin after the Home Office refused him a work permit.

The 21-year-old defender has been training with Stoke for the past fortnight, and a fee had been negotiated with his Jamaican club Portmore United.

But a cruciate knee ligament injury meant Austin failed to play the requisite number of internationals over the past two years to qualify for a permit.

"It's a big disappointment. The case was thrust upon us and so we didn't have time to prepare for it," said Stoke's assistant manager, Dave Kemp.

"He's trained brilliantly and been very impressive. He's fully fit now and back in the Jamaican national team, but because of the injury he missed three Gold Cup qualifying games and so didn't meet the necessary criteria for being considered a regular international.

"He will be very disappointed, but we will keep tabs on him and hopefully we can do something in the future.

"I believe we can re-apply for a permit in 12 months."

I thought injury would not be held against a player when dealing with work permits. That doesn't seem to make much sense, if the man was injured and would have been picked then I don't see why he should have been refused the permit.

Big up to Austin...he is young solid defender who should impress during Olympic qualifying. Maybe he should take a chance in Europe before trying the UK. I believe he has a good agent from the USA

The amount of times he represented Jamaica is important. How many was it?

T, it's not the injury it's the result of the injury - lack of games played.

Been saying it for awhile, Rudolph Austin is the real deal. Hopefully he stays healthy and give some needed cover/competition for the RB/RM position on the national team.

ooohhh, I see. OK madam.

But one question, if the club was prepared, could they not have appealed the decision based on what you just said, that he would have been picked but because of the injury, after recovery he wasn't selected due to lack of match fitness and not because he was not good enough?

Unless the rules have changed, it's always been 75% in a 2 year period. Whether you was sick, injured and couldn't play, you forget to show up, u miss the flight, you wake up late, it's still 75% of international games in a 2 year period.

I can't go to the judge and tell him if I didn't drink I wouldn't have hit the tree, so pretend I didn't drink! \:\)

Austin is one of my players but if Home Office seh no because he

then is no. Of course, you can appeal and all a that, which is probably what you would do and say 'if he wasn't injured he would have been selected'. Might not go over so well with Home Office, but you can try still.

Wrong analogy because an injury happens to you, while you choose to drink drive, but I get what you are saying.

Portmore/St catherine probably have the Best talent Pool on the Island right now. Portmore FC will sweep all the major trophies this yr: Premier league, Red stripe knock out and Caribbean Champions Cup.

Do you know when he will have played the right number of games to meet the '75% of competitive games in the last 2 years' rule?

Has he actually signed for Stoke City - and on loan back at Portmore until he meets the UK permit criteria?

Well, he just started back playing with the Senior team on June 21, 2007 so the earliest he would be available would be June 2009. He received his first cap in October 2004, but he was injured most of 2005-2006.

But, as Jamaica haven't played many competitive games in recent years (just the 3 games in the Caribbean Cup last year?), as long as he plays in the World Cup Qualifiers next year, the point at which he's played 3/4 of the competitive games in the preceeding 2 years may come quite quickly into the World Cup campaign?

And, at that point, surely a renewed permit application would be successful and the Stoke move could go through?
