ok....the word is losing, secondly, he has always done excellently with our youth players. He actually has one of the best win records for U23 and younger.

Now Jamaica has beaten Columbia, and all you can think about doing is tearing down our coach?

Well guesse wat the match was kinda obvious to know who was going to win. Cause the south american countires are using their U-17 squad.

So u expext 18 and 19 year olds to lose to 13,14,15,16 and 17 year olds ?

Give credit where credit is due! Downswell was always a good juvenile coach. His problem at the senior level was treating the senior like they were pickney. He will be a good senior coach once he learns to deal with pro's.

Haiti's also competing with their U-17 squad at the Pan-Am Games as preparation for the U-17 World Cup

Congrats to the boys.

I don't recall Downswell taking us to any Youth World Cup.

I remember him having quite a bad record at the youth level.

Nope. Haiti is using its U-17 team. There are only 2 U-20 in the team and that's because they play in Argentina and Haiti's youth coach simply wants to evaluate their progress.

Boyz snatch victory from Colombia
Monday, July 16, 2007

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Jamaica had reasons to celebrate yesterday after the national Under-20 team eked out a slim 1-0 win over South American outfit Colombia in the first round Group C match at the Zico Football Centre.

Playing on an uneven surface, the young Reggae Boyz did not get the breakthrough until mid-way the second half, despite dominating the Colombians.

Meadhaven United and Jamaica College playmaker Kemmar Daley secured the three points after stealing the ball from an opposing defender just in their half, before he out-paced two others and beat Javier Cardona to his right in goal on 76 minutes.

The Wendell Downswell-coached team had created more goalscoring chances in the first half, which forced the Colombian custodian into action no fewer than six occasions as Daley came close twice.

Downswell, the former technical director of the national programme, told the Observer that the team could have played even better if they had more pre-tournament time.
"Having won this game, we have set the stage now and our intention is to build on this victory...," he said.

The young Boyz will next be in action on Wednesday when they face Argentina at the Miecimo Da Silva Complex at 12:30 pm (10:30 Jamaica time) and Downswell indicated that he'll be working on the offensive aspect of the team as they played well defensively against Colombia.

"Offensively we were not all that fluent as we should have been, missing a few chances. but once we can improve the finishing, we should be in good stead to face Argentina," Downswell noted.

In the meantime, Jamaican athletes will be participating in four sporting disciplines today as the Games swing into high gear.

Cyclist Ricardo Lynch will compete in the sprints; the Reggae Girlz will look to bounce back from Saturday's 5-0 lost to Brazil when they oppose Uruguay at the Miecimo da Silva Complex, Kennett Edwards will oppose Carlos Vasquez of Venezuela in the preliminaries of the under-80 kilo-gram in Taekwondo; while Alia Atkinson, Natasha Moodie and Brad Hamilton will take to the pool.

Teams:

Jamaica - Duwayne Kerr, Ajuran Brown, Eric Vernon, Obrian Woodbine, Damaine Thompson, Troy Smith, Ricardo Cousins, Kemmar Daley, Edward Campbell, John-Ross Doyley, Alanzo Adlam.

Subs not used: Dwayne Miller, Andrae Campbell, Jermaine Jarrett, James Thomas, Dwayne Smith, Norman Bailey, Draion McNain

Booked: C Cousins (57th), E Campbell (75th), A Brown (86th).

Colombia - Javier Cardona, Edward Zea, Sebastian Viafara, Carlos Ramos, Andres Mosquera, Charles Quinto, Juian Guillermo, James Rodriguez, Luis Mosquera, Cristian Nazareth, Edgar Filipe PArdo.

Subs not used: Ricardo Chara, Carlos, Santiago, Trellez, Andres Felipe Mosquera, Osneider Alvarez, Ricardo Serna Jose Ramirez.

Booked: J Rodriguez (19th).
