RIO DE JANEIRO, July 12 – Jamaica started well its participation on the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007. The women’s country team of football defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a match held this Thursday, 12 July, at the Miécimo da Silva Complex. The goal was scored by Tashana Vincent , two minutes after starting the second half.

Among the supporters there was the president of the Organizing Committee of Jamaica, Michael Fennet, who fought for his country’s athletes during all the match.

“ I liked the match a lot, even if the field was kind of heavy due to the rain. This disturbed a little”, said the oficial.

“ We have a good team, but it’s still too soon to think on medals”, he admited

If, at one side, the president of the Jamaican Committee was among the supporters, at the other side, ecuadorians weightlifting athletes fought for their country’s team . The incentive given by supporters was well succeded, pushing the ecuadorian girls forward during the second half, pressing their opponents, who had troubles on avoiding the draw’s goal.

Jamaica will be back on the fields next Saturday, July 14, at 3:30PM, vs Brazil, while Ecuador faces Canada on Monday, 16 July, also at 3:30PM. Both matches will take place at João Havelange Stadium.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Jamaica's senior women's footballers overcame waterlogged conditions and a red card to secure a deserved 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their first-round Group 'A' game here yesterday at the Miecimo da Silva Complex.

The result means the Charles Edwards-coached team is tied with hosts Brazil at the top of the group, after the South Americans thrashed Uruguay 4-0 in another game.

The Reggae Girlz snatched the winning goal two minutes into the second stanza when the recalled Tashana Vincent held off two defenders before lobbing the onrushing Carla Wray in goal for Ecuador.

Vincent was played through by strike partner Venecia Reid, who along with Omolyn Davis, had strung together four slick passes from midfield.

However, Davis changed from hero to villain 18 minutes later when she was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on defender Barbara Sanchez along the right touchline in Ecuador's half.

Their best chance of equalising came in the 76th minute, when Denise Pesantes' powerful free-kick from 25 yards bounced off the crossbar and back into play after beating goalkeeper Paula Jackson.

Edwards switched from an attacking 4-4-2 formation to the more defensive 5-3-1 in a bid to cover for the one-man disadvantage, which worked for the last 20 minutes of regulation and four minutes of extra-time.

"We came here not knowing what the opposition was like and we never had any training session or anything thing of that sort, but the girls came out, they put a lot of heart and soul into it and they fought very hard and deserved the win," Edwards told the Observer as Bob Marley's Jammin blared on the public address system.

The Reggae Girlz dominated the early exchanges, stringing together more passes than their disorganised opponents and came close to scoring with two good chances, which went abegging.

A well-struck free-kick from 22 yards by the sturdily built Davis rebounded off the crossbar in the seventh minute, before a header from Reid in the penalty box went wide of the right up-right after Vincent found her with a pinpoint cross from the right flank.

Edwards also had high praises for the manner in which the Jamaicans handled themselves in the last 25 minutes, playing at a man short.

"We're very proud of them and this start can only mean good for us going down the road," reasoned the replacement for Vin Blane - who resigned in March.

The Girlz, who are seeking one of two qualifying spots at the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing, will play Brazil on Saturday at the Joao Havalange Stadium.

"Our opposition gets tougher, but with today's (yesterday's) victory we'll be able to give a better performance in the next game, although it's against Brazil," Edwards stated.
In Group 'B' action yesterday, Argentina blanked Panama 2-0.
