Hi, I have been an observer of this site for a long time. I read it at least twice daily, but choose not to interject until now. I am a Jamaican that's base in Florida, but travel to Jamaica literally every week for personal business. I went on this site hoping to get some new information on our boyz, instead I see this irrational and ridiculous commentary.
I am currently in Jamaica and returning to Florida tomorrow. When I heard Portia mention the chosen date of election, my reaction was this lady is "mad." And seeing this opinion even enforces the literacy of our culture.
In the past, an election has never been prolong for such extended period. The main reason is simple, violence. Election in the past as been quick to help minimize criminal activity. Next, the selected date is one week from the start of the new school year. Whichever party that looses, you can guarantee violence will affect the start of the school year. Additionally, summer is a peak season for traveling. Election will definitely be deterrence to out GDP.
Member, the next time you chose to make such a bold comment, please consider the effect on Jamaicans and the outcome of our economy.
Jamaica is already unstable, and the last thing the country needs is a predictable negative outcome due to Portia's absurd decision and a insensitive remark.

Election Dates
1976- December 15 1980- October 30 1983- December 15 1989- February 9 1993- March 30 1997- December 18 2002- October 16
Now that we have clarified that blatant lie, lets address your other points.
You state that the elections will disrupt the beginning of the school year- what do you find to be more prudent- having the elections when school is in full swing possibly disrupting students preparing for exams (if done before summer) and teachers who have already gotten back into the full swing of educating our youths (after summer)- don't you think it makes more sense to have the elections while teachers are still on holidays.
Your other point about summer travel being pivotal to our tourism interest- is counteracted by the mere fact that a significant amount of our past elections were held during December, which is by far the number one season for travel.
Your other wild accusations of one party hoping for or precipitating violence borders on shear political tribalism and only reinforces the point that you are chauvinist trying come across as a concerned citizen.
Actually tashumbre is somewhat correct, the election is called and nomination date is normally 7 days after so then election date is 21 days after that (so it is written in the constitution). However sista p chose to delay the nomination date till august hence election date being the 27th.
So as u can see enlightened you are in the dark on this one, go read up before you talk next time about constitutional matters. However it is all politics, so we nah go penny it.

This cannot be an argument of constitutionality because any deviation would be unconstitutional and hence illegal- this is more an argument of history and tradition.
I assumed tashumbre was referring to the actual election date because of points in his argument that gave mention to tourism and the beginning of the new school year.
It didn't dawn on me that he could be referring to the announcement of the election to the actual nomination date until I read the news this morning.
Anybody has source where I can view the dates of prior election announcements? it would be greatly appreciated as I am always open to learning more.
I dont think this election will be a shoot up the place, stand firm and high up affair..
There are a few old school political supporters who nuh have nuh sense but overall the crowd dun know its not really about the parties anymore. Its about personalities.
Portia has made some slips like the Hanna lady she forced onto St. anns and arguing about Air time and caught a few times brawling but she's real. And all her slips were done in tru Jamaican style and for the people, not for herself I feel.
She's introduced JLP politicians onto her party. I prefer to think her reasoning is politics all over the world is global and centre now.. Right and Left only exist in certain parts of the globe that are behind the times. And so lets introduce politicians who will work for the party I think she thought.
Personally I want Portia to win coz I dont think Jamaica can deal wid a change right now. But I think a lady leader hopefully will inject a new vibe and sense of direction for Jamaica..
So a di woman dem mi a defend.. Man dem fi just gwaan. JFF needs a woman now as well but Princess look like she need some encouragement.

They make the world so hard
I'm hoping for stabilization, re-educate, promote pro jamaica, development and investment then sustain likle growth cryuff..
But I suppose we know we have either Boxhill or Burrell copies but just hoping and praying ...
. . .if the country really can't handle a change right now then we should expect more of the same. The Prime Minister has already made clear in very clear terms by both words and deeds that she's continuing Patterson's legacy- a legacy that will leave Jamaica over 1 trillion dollars in debt by the time Omar Davies ends his disastrous tour as minister of finance. She has been PM for 15+ months now-what indication is there from any action she has taken that the "people's" term is going to be any different from the previous 4?-or maybe the previous 4 were good for Ja.
Good points froms cruff, however as this is a football site i will refrain from the good nature of sports to talk too much on politics.
though i must say that the government has frigged up too many rass times and by the time they get another term my grandchildren will be paying off debts that omar davies borrowed while going to world bank and imf. Or the fact that the patterson led govt has basically liberalized every part of the economy. For those of you who havent been to university or are knowledgebale on the effects of capitalism / liberalism / globalization on a world economy. It does not favour developing countries, it never did, and was not designed as such. So we basically got screwed over without knowing it, by jumping on the globalization bandwagon.
Liberalism in itself isn't wrong but it leads to the kind of inequalities that leave the majority poor and the wealthy wealthier.
In any case i only have one question to ask the fellow members on this board, what do you think is jamaica's most valuable resource? (aside from its people)
i will give my answer after a few of you have responded.
Land, its as simple as that, jamaica is an island (surrounded by water) so naturally the land is a limited resource, especially when one looks at the size of the island in comparison to other countries throughout the world. Now when a significant portion of your limited commodity is owned by foreigners that does leave you in a bind doesnt it? aside from that global warming is a factor. Dont believe me, go outside, enjoy the summer sun! so that means that sooner or later the water levels will be rising, what does that mean for an island like jamaica, the same for all other islands, the land mass will be reduced. Get where i am going with this? anyway this is only one aspect.
I am not pro JLP or PNP, i was grown in a family that was neutral and i was taught not to fall into the traps of political tribalism. Iwas told from a young age to read between the lines and get to the heart of any issue and that is what has been important to me, issues and policies and actions.
Now to be fair the jlp does not need to prove anything, they are not the ones in power, the onus is on the pnp to prove they are not messing up. All the jlp has to do is show how the pnp has messed up jamaica. I don't think they have been a great opposition party but who really watched what the opposition does?
Isnt it honestly the policies and actions of the government that matters the most, simply because what ever decisions they make is binding on hte residents of jamaica. One would think that common sense would make this clear.
The pnp has done its share of commendable deed, yet one cannot help fault them, and if you are not living in jamaica, you really should shut up because you dont have to live with this government's actions which include waste of public funds, corruption, nepotism, fraud. They have very little respect for some of the people of this country which is a big slight on them.
It is easy to sit abroad and comment on the politics, but when one lives in jamaica and worries around election time about the stupidity of the people who are going out there shouting jlp or pnp and not realize that they are just means to an end and that the things they are dying for and destroying lives for are not even important.
many fall everyday because of ignorance, are you one of them?
I like your answers but u left out a few things, the women (caaaan leave dem out) been around the wester part of the world and aint seen as many beautiful woman like those in ja. though them dominican honeys were hot.
