I like the squad, Bora continues to give everyone a look. I am a bit concerned about the match fitness of Khari but if he could train for a month with the Reggaeboyz before return to Sweden that would be good.

Let us remember that we need to build depth in the back, so Claude Davis, Damion Stewart and hopefully Nyron Norworthy get a run together.

Bora names squad for Chile game

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Technical director of Jamaica's football Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic has named a squad to begin preparations for a friendly international against Chile inside the National Stadium on Tuesday, June 5.

Miami FC's attacking midfielder, Sean Fraser, who scored for his club over the weekend, has earned his first call since Bora assumed coaching duties. Portmore United's Wolry Wolfe has also been included in the group, having spent a spell on the outside of the national set up.
Patrick Hylton (right), National Commercial Bank's Group managing director is all smiles as Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic (left), JFF technical director autographs a keepsake football that will be displayed at the financial institution's Wellness & Recreation Centre, while Crenston Boxhill, JFF president watches closely. NCB is a major sponsor of the Reggae Boyz 'Back to Africa' World Cup Campaign.

Apart from the senior team, Fraser has represented Jamaica at the Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 levels, while Wolfe has done duty with the Under-20s and Under-23s.

There is one newcomer to Bora's team in Harbour View's diminutive midfielder, Richard Edwards - a hard tackler and workaholic. But there is no Jermaine Hue - a crafty midfielder with an educated left foot.

Stoke City's Ricardo Fuller, Sheffield United's Luton Shelton and Bolton Wanderers' Ricardo Gardner are the overseas-based players summoned for the game. Fuller and Shelton, claims a JFF press release, are already in the island. AIK Stockholm's Khari Stephenson, who was invited, will not be available, having just resumed full training with his club after suffering a broken arm.

The other members of the squad are all home-based and who have been a part of the team at one time or another since Bora took over in January.
Ranked 69th in the world according to the latest Coca-Cola/FIFA rankings, the Reggae Boyz will begin training on Thursday at Brancourt in Clarendon.

Chile, of South America, are currently ranked 43rd in the world and have qualified for seven World Cup Finals. As hosts, they finished third to eventual winners, Brazil, in 1962.

Coming into the June 5 game against the Boyz, Chile are coming off three wins, two draws and a loss (0-4 to Brazil) in their last six outings.

The first win was a 1-0 scoreline over South American neighbours Venezuela on February 7, then they blanked visiting Cuba 3-0 and 2-0 on May 9 and 16, respectively, while the draws were 1-1 against Central American outfit Costa Rica on March 28 and a goalless result with two-time World Cup winners Argentina on April 18.

Jamaica's squad: Andre Redwood, Mario Harrison, Allien Whittaker, Nicholy Finlayson, Jermaine Taylor, Demar Phillips, Donald Stewart, Richard McCallum, Fabian Taylor, Lovel Palmer, Wolry Wolfe, Christopher Harvey, Mario Swaby, Richard Edwards, Adrian Reid, Ricardo Gardner, Keneil Moodie, Luton Shelton, Donovan Davis, Sean Fraser, Fabian Davis, Ricardo Fuller and Xavian Virgo.

Why not enlist the help of some of the other overseas based players in defense. If we are playing a higher profile team, then we should improve our chances for getting a win. We can always give the less experienced players opportunities to show their ability against lesser opponents.

I do get the impression from having read it elsewhere that Bora is the kind of guy who won't be begging anyonw to play. I have to agree with that. So he is using only those players that are available. I am guessing that Damion Stewart, JJ and a couple of others are not in the island and he is not going to beg them to come, because he only wants willing participants. Note I have not mentioned Claude Davis, because I know he has carried on with some antics in the past in playing for JA.

I may be out of touch with local ball but the defendors in this squad seem weak and inexperience to me - we definately need Claude and Damion.

Why Boro keep selecting Donald Stewart and Fabian Davis? What can they possibly offer at this stage?

What happen to Demar Stewart or Reid (left back)?

It is a tricky situation for Bora but those weak defenders need experience against high level competiton. What will we do next year if Claude and Damion get injured or suspended at the same time(HAPPENED BEFORE ;)? Right now is the time to bloody them.

Donald Stewart and Fabian Davis are in the squad due their professionalism, fitness, hardwork and experience, which are more off the field qualities.

Well he could have called at least one of them. They (Claude and Damion) are our two best defendors right now.

I can't see why it's a tricky situation for him.
To me it's straigtforward. You are playing a quality team so you should try to field strong team. Combine some of the inexperienced guys with the experienced ones. I guess he might be saying Fabian and Donald bring experience but (in my opinion) these guys are always going to be just club ballers.

What happen to Shavar Thomas? Did the defendor/rightback guy from LA Galaxy (can't remember his name) retired?

I think Damion Stewart needs a rest after playing 45+ matches for QPR in 2006/2007. Claude Davis MIGHT be trying to sort out his future at Sheffield United or elsewhere. Shavar Thomas was recently traded for LA Galaxy to Chivas USA and finally played a full 90 the last two matches. Tyrone Marshall(LA Galaxy) turns 33 this year and might be done with international football.

What I like about the squad are the U23 defenders who are getting experience against quality competition:

Jermanie Taylor
Xavian Virgo
Keneil Moodie
Adrian Reid
Nicholy Finalyson

I would bring my strongest team to play top flight competition, but we don't have access to all the information the coaching staff is working with. It looks like Bora is preparing for both the Olympics and world cup. Still, it is good for the local based players as they will get much needed international experience against a quality opposition. This should pay dividends in the future.

Lined up for Chile Andre Redwood, Allien Whittaker, Mario Harrison, Nicholy Finlayson, Jermaine Taylor, Donald Stewart, Fabian Taylor, Richard Edwards, Christopher Harvey, Lovel Palmer, Demar Phillips, Richard McCallum, Adrian Reid, Wolry Wolfe, Mario Swaby, Keneil Moodie, Xavian Virgo, Fabian Davis, Ricardo Gardner, Luton Shelton, Donovan Davis, Sean Fraser, Ricardo Fuller, Khari Stephenson.

richard McCallum, Xavian Virgo, Jermaine Taylor, Mario Swaby,Mario Harrison, Demar Phillips, Donald Stewart, Adrian Reid, Fabian Taylor, Nicholy Finlayson, Lovel Palmer,Donavan Davis, A Whittaker have all become consistent choices of Bora.

Oneil Smith, Kavin Bryan, Plummer, Howell, D.Williams, Pearce all had chances to impress or even to sit on the bench.

Though I cant say I'm surprised that Bora didn't invite Jermaine Hue which probably could be bcoz he see's this a problem:a crafty midfielder with an educated left foot. The education deh di wrong place. But I am surprised that Jamal Campbell Ryce, Jermaine Johnson and even Garfield Reid were not invited.

All of these three guys work hard, run hard and are good with the ball also.

We could also convert Marshall to permanent defence now. Or are we not hoping for experience anymore.

Ah well.. I wish them all the best....
