JFF seeks support for young Boyz

WITH A grand total of $18 million poured into the hosting of the CON-CACAF Under-17 tournament by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), president of the association, Crenston Boxhill, has appealed for the nation's full support during the two-week tournament.
" I want to call on the football-loving Jamaicans to come out and support every single game, we have four games and we need the public to come out," Boxhill said during a press conference at the JFF headquarters in New Kingston on Thursday. "It will be no use playing at home and being unable to take full advantage of the homefield advantage."
Offset expenses
In an attempt to try and offset some of the expense, the JFF is currently in negotiations with unnamed corporate entities, but having only managed to raise $3 million it is hoping to get some revenue from gate receipts.
The young Reggae Boyz are aiming to become the third Jamaica youth team to qualify for a World Cup, hoping to emulate the successes of the Under-17 team in 1999 and the Under-20 team in 2001.
Eleven of the current squad were on a team that won the Caribbean Under-15 championship and the side recently got the better of Mexico in a two-leg friendly back in February.
Sponsors for schools
In an attempt to garner support for the traditionally weak area of youth football, the JFF has implemented a programme which will see corporate Jamaica sponsor various schools around the island, which has already seen Digicel come on board, purchasing 60 tickets for six schools.
At Thursday's event the federation was also presented with $150,000 worth of sponsorship from JMMB and $1 million from the Sports Development Foun-dation.
"We don't normally get support at this level, but Jamaica has to realise that these are our future Reggae Boyz." Boxhill said. "We really need the nation to rally around the Under-17 team in the next couple of days.

Costa Rica arrive today for Under-17 tourney

Costa Rica's 29-member delegation is scheduled to arrive in Jamaica today for the CONCACAF Group B Under-17 Youth World Cup qualification tournament to be staged at the National Stadium from April 28 to May 6.
The Central Americans are expected to travel west on arrival to the mid-island parish of Manchester, where they plan to have a two-day pre-tournament camp in the parish capital of cool Mandeville.
They will then journey back east to Kingston on Thursday for their first game against Trinidad and Tobago at 5:00 pm on Saturday. Host Jamaica will begin their campaign against Canada on the same day at 7:00 pm.
Trinidad & Tobago will arrive tomorrow, while the USA and Canada are expected here on Thursday.
Five teams - Jamaica, Costa Rica, USA, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago - are seeking to capture three qualifying spots for the Under-17 World Cup in South Korea from August 18 to September 9.
From the Group A tournament played in Honduras earlier this month, the hosts and French-speaking Caribbean neighbours Haiti have advanced to South Korea. World champions Mexico were eliminated from this group.
Jamaica are looking to repeat their qualification to the 1999 Under-17 World Cup which was held in New Zealand

Two overseas-based players join Young Boyz

Two overseas-based players - Jermaine Jarrett and Yannick Salmon - have joined Jamaica's Under-17 football squad, which is in the last stages of preparations ahead of the final round of the CONCACAF FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifying tournament and coach David Hunt believes they will make positive contributions.
Jarrett, who joined up with the group yesterday, hails from Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, while Salmon, who arrived on Monday, attends Westbury High School in Long Island, USA.
"One is the former captain, Jarrett, and Yanique has toured with us... three occasions... he also played against Mexico," Hunt said during a training session at the Constant Spring Sports Complex yesterday.
"He's (Salmon) a very good player, one who came at his own expense and he has fitted in perfectly. He's a very strong player who'll give us a lot of options as he can play in different positions," Hunt added.
Technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic was present at yesterday's session, and after going through their technical workout with Milutinovic, coach Hunt said the players were eager to start the tournament as they expect to do their country proud.
The squad currently comprises 26 players and although the tournament is a mere days away, Hunt is in no hurry to trim the outfit.
"It's important to keep the 26 players because you can never tell what will happen. We have up to 48 hours to name the squad and 24 hours to replace any injured player," he said.
Hunt also appealed to the public to turn out to support the team.
Jamaica will host the USA, Canada, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago for one of the three available spot

Under-17 Boyz motivated at 'power luncheon'

NATIONAL Under-17 football captain Dever Orgill said the young Reggae Boyz have been preparing well for the CONCACAF final-round World Cup qualifiers, and the team is looking to even better things.
Speaking at a Milo-sponsored 'power luncheon' and motivational session for the youth team at the Alhambra Inn yesterday, Orgill said "the team will perform to the best of their ability and I know we'll get through what we're working for".
"From the games we played, no team has ever dominated us and... we know that this team is one of the best Under-17 teams that will ever work towards the qualifiers. We're looking towards better things than just to qualify for the World Cup," Orgill added.
As hosts, Jamaica will play the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago in the tournament that begins on Saturday at the National Stadium. At stake is one of three available spots to the FIFA World Cup later this year.
Guest speaker Dr Kingsley 'Ragashanti' Stewart told the youngsters to always fine-tune their preparations and maintain focus.
"Always be ready to give your best performance," Stewart said.
JFF president Crenston Boxhill, technical director Velibor Milutinovic and coach David Hunt were also at the function.

Spoke to a Canadian friend who said their should be several college coaches in Jamaica this weekend watching the USA, Canada, Jamaica and Trinidad squads for upcoming talent.

Bora guides Under-17 training session

National technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic conducted a spirited Under-17 training session at Stadium East field yesterday as coach David Hunt watched keenly from the sidelines.
The experienced Serb-born coach guided the Young Reggae Boyz through various drills, which included two-team scrimmages and set pieces as the team prepares for their first match against Canada tomorrow in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers to be staged at the National Stadium.
Having the respected coach taking them through their paces, the Boyz eagerly responded to his directions.
Hunt said he was pleased with the session. "We're on track and I believe the training went reasonably well... what we've been doing is some revision work and looking at some dead-ball situations," he said.
While Hunt said he has decided on his final squad for the five-team tournament which runs to May 6, he refused to say who made the cut. Instead, he said "the JFF will make an announcement of the final team shortly".
Jamaica are seeking one of three qualifying spots to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held in South Korea from August 18 to September 9.
The Reggae Boyz will also face CONCACAF kingpins USA, Costa Rica and neighbours Trinidad & Tobago in a round-robin format.
Yesterday, Costa Rica trained inside the National Stadium and journalists were surprised at the physical build of the Central Americans, but Hunt was not intimidated.
"We're prepared for all circumstances... we have players who are strong... we feel we match up well against all teams," he said.
