H'View secure NPL title Hard work paid off, says Hyde Ian Burnett, Sports Editor Thursday, April 19, 2007

Harbour View were forced to delay their celebration of a second National Premier League (NPL) title at the end of a 1-1 draw away to relegated Naggo's Head at the Ferdie Neita Sports Complex yesterday.
But by the end of the late kick-off game involving nearest challengers Portmore United three hours later, the 'Stars of the East' were crowned champions of the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League.
Harbour View's result, coupled with Portmore United's 1-1 draw with Waterhouse at Drewsland, left Harbour View with an unassailable 65 points - 10 more than Portmore United - with three rounds remaining.
"It's a great feeling, I'm very elated," beamed coach Lenworth 'Teacher' Hyde last night. Harbour View first won the NPL in the 1999-2000 season under the late coach Peter Cargill.
Hyde, who also guided Portmore United to the title in 2002-03, paid tribute to God, his support staff, the players, the management and executives of the club and the Harbour View community.
"We can't forget God, who made it possible," said Hyde. "We went to church in the community together on a number of occasions. I came to the club and found a disciplined group of players and together with the support staff, including assistant coaches Max Straw and Andrew Hines, manager Ann-Marie Massey, physio Karen Julius, club president Carvel Stewart, club manager Clyde Jureidini and everybody who helped, it worked perfectly for us."
Hyde, who was on his way to join the celebrations at the Harbour View Football Club when he spoke to the Observer, added: "Special praises to the players, they wanted it more than anything else. They didn't want what happened to them last year happen again this year. We had a lot of fun in training. We had fun while working hard and it has paid off. The coaching staff and the players worked really well this season."
Last year Harbour View squandered a 13-point lead and were beaten by Waterhouse with more than a round to spare, but they ensured there would be no repeat, claiming the title this season with three rounds remaining.
For winning the NPL, Harbour View will collect $2.15 million. They were also the first end-of-round champions, which carries a bounty of $165,000, and they also won $110,000 for being runners-up in the second end-of-round final.
Harbour View are currently the top goalscoring team with 58 strikes and are on course to win the $70,000 prize for that category.
Captain Lovel Palmer gave Harbour View the lead on 29 minutes yesterday, before Bridgeport High's Kenardo Forbes equalised three minutes from the interval.
In the late game, veteran striker Oneil McDonald handed Portmore United a lifeline with a 52nd minute strike, but Sean Coleman eliminated the visitors' diminishing hopes with an 80th-minute equaliser.
After 30 of the 33 rounds, Harbour View lead the standings with 65 points, ahead of Portmore United on 65. They are followed by Reno on 53, Waterhouse, 46, Tivoli Gardens, 46, August Town, 41, Village United, 37, Boys' Town, 36, Arnett Gardens, 35, Seba United, 30, Wadadah, 20 and Naggo's Head, 18.
Village United and Wadadah complete their 30th round match today at Catherine Hall at 3:30 pm.
Harbour View went ahead when captain Palmer was gifted possession of the ball by defender Andeen Jarrett metres outside Naggo's Head's penalty area, and he made Jarrett pay by advancing deep inside the area before chipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Leon Goffe.
But three minutes from the interval, Bridgeport Manning Cupper Forbes beat Dwayne Miller at his near post after the effective midfielder was played through by Jermaine Clarke. Harbour View had numerous chances to find the winner with Jermaine Hue, Fabian Taylor and striker partner Kavin Bryan going close.

Does HV possess the best attacking trio in the NPL with Jermaine Hue, Fabian Taylor and Kevin Bryan?

HARBOUR VIEW ARE CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF THE 2006-07 PREMIER LEAGUE AFTER DRAWING 1-1 WITH NAGGO HEAD!
Captain of Harbour View Lovel Palmer (right) controls the ball under pressure from Andrew Bravos of Naggo's Head (Photo: Garfield Robinson) An afternoon that promised a new Champion belatedly crown the “Stars of the East” not in their clash with relegated bound Naggo Head but in a strange twist of faith, when dethroned Champions Waterhouse scored against second placed Portmore United, with only nine minutes left in the late game at Drewsland.
Eleven points separates the leaders but with Portmore United faltering in their fourth consecutive drawn game (0-0,2-2,2-2-1-1) effectively put themselves out of the running for the title (on 55 points) and have to be more productive in securing a few victories in the last three games less they are also bypassed by the lurking Reno FC who are on 53 points and challenging for a place in the CFU Caribbean Club Championship.
Harbour View by virtue of the results of today’s games have assumed an unassailable lead of 10 points with only a best possible 9 points on claim, this sparked a spontaneous celebration by the players glued to the Live Radio Broadcast at the Club.
Horns started tooting, banging on signboards, shouts, cries and screams were bellowed from the greatest heights as relief was achieved and finally, finally we exhaled after the trauma of last years poor finish.
The Xzibit crew cranked up the disco as wild dancing erupted on the dance-floor, players, coaches, managers and executives were severely doused with water as liquor flowed sweetly, smiles adorned the faces of the many long suffering fans, media personalities and supporters as TVJ filmed every active moment of it inclusive of interviews.
At midnight the crowd slowly started treking home as the party is to be continued in earnest on Sunday as the Live TV home game against Trelawny’s Village United where an official presentation of the Premier League Trophy, Medals and the necessary pomp and pageantry that accompanies it.
Captain, Lovel Palmer robbed the defender of the ball before eluding the goalkeeper with a neat chip to score the all important first goal after 30 minutes.
Kenardo Forbes slipped his marker to bury his scorcher at the near post from just inside the area with 72 minutes elapsed on the clock. Harbour View totally dominated the second half but missed many opportunities to score as anxiety determined failure to convert. When we did convert twice both were disallowed even as the Television replays displayed perfect timing of the final run of Lovel Palmer.
Kavin Bryan and Jermaine Hue came closest twice as they beat the defence and shot onto the upright as well as headed just over the bar while Fabian Taylor’s goal-bound shot was clearly handled inside the penalty area but no penalty was awarded.
Sometimes destiny overpowers efforts and as we congratulate Coach, Wayne Fairclough who prepared his troops to fight to the very end.
The slightly off-beat tempo of the new Champions reflected the pressure of the moment across the league as four out of five games ended in draws as only Boy’s Town notched a 3-1 victory over neighbours Arnett Gardens.
Preparations for celebration takes the order of the day while a new disciplined dimension comes into effect in the next three games. These including Village United and Wadadah at home on Sunday and Wednesday respectively followed by the much awaited grudge match against Reno at St. Elizabeth Technical High School on Sunday, April 29th, 2007 to end the season on a high

Harbour View rebound from last year's debacle to claim crown

Audley Boyd, Assistant Sport Editor
IT NEVER quite happened the way they had anticipated, or would have preferred - with a victory in their match yesterday afternoon against bottom-of-the-table Naggo Head at Ferdie Neita Park.
Merely three hours later, Harbour View Football Club never really mattered, having been confirmed the 2006-07 champions of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL).
With three rounds remaining, the 'Stars of the East' hold an unassailable 10-point lead with a tally of 65, after yesterday's one-all draw against Naggo Head, on 18, in a game where captain Lovel Palmer (29th) opened the scoring for Harbour View, only to see his effort cancelled at the 41st by impressive teenage midfielder Kenardo Forbes.
Portmore united at number 2
Harbour View are followed in the standings by Portmore United on 55, whose 1-1 draw in last night's late match against last year's winners Waterhouse at their Drewsland Mini Stadium ended the title race.
"I feel great, it's a great feeling," an elated Lenworth 'Teacher' Hyde Sr., who took up duties as the head coach at the start of the season at Harbour View, having coached at Portmore the previous year, told STAR Sports when contacted last night.
He added: "I'm happy for the organisation overall, especially the immediate coaching staff - Howard 'Max' Straw, Andrew 'Bower' Hines, Ann-Marie Massey, Karen Julius, the physiotherapist, and Les Peddlar, the gym instructor at Hughenden Avenue, who is the fitness trainer. All of us did it, it's not a one-man thing.
"I must big up Clyde Jureidini, Michael Jureidini, Mr. Carvel Stewart and every member of the board, the executives, for giving me the opportunity to coach the team."
Continuing, Hyde said the players deserve the biggest praise.
"I just want to big up the players, you can't leave them out, they're the ones who did it. They had the right discipline and attitude. And you can't leave out God."
Asked if he would have preferred to have initiated celebrations with an expected win over the bottom-placed debutant Naggo Head team, Hyde was affirmative.
"Yes, most definitely. That was our aim but it was tough playing on the field because we couldn't play our passing game ... but we got a lot of chances.
"I think we were a little anxious, we should have taken our time," observed Hyde, the former national midfield general who won four National League titles as a player at Tivoli Gardens and Boys' Town.
It is Harbour View's second NPL title success following their 2000 triumph.
They have had several near-misses, including last season when the team blew a 13-point lead, and Hyde Sr. says this season's immediate victory has made it even sweeter.
"It's very, very pleasing to the team and the club seeing what happened last year," he remarked, noting that he was headed to the Harbour View club where they were assembling for a celebration which, delayed or not, was all that mattered.

Party time! H'View celebrate NPL title win with bubbles, music BY IAN BURNETT Sports Editor burnetti@jamaicaobserver.com Monday, April 23, 2007
The champagne bottles popped and their contents spewed joyfully after champions Harbour View were presented with a replica of the Wray & Nephew National Premier League trophy at centre field after their comfortable 3-0 victory over Village United yesterday.
The 'Stars of the East', who were crowned champions last Wednesday following the 30th round of matches, re-entered the field at game's end to receive their trophy on a podium behind a Harbour View Football Club banner, accompanied by the thumping sounds of Ricardo "Bibi" Gardner's song, Move To Your Goal. JFF president Crenston Boxhill (right) presents the Harbour View captain Lovel Palmer with a replica of the Wray & Nephew NPL trophy at the Harbour View mini stadium yesterday. Looking on are (from left) Nicholas Dodd, David Hobson of the sponsors and KSAFA president Stewart Stephenson. (Photo: Bryan Cummings)
On the podium, the elated winners were presented with the trophy by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Crenston Boxhill, Wray & Nephew's David Hobson and KSAFA president AB Stewart Stephenson. Blue and yellow balloons, representing the colours of the famous club, were then released into the air. An after party began immediately afterwards in the players' area.
Yesterday's game was meant to be a celebration for the community and the players didn't disappoint them. Led by a brace from Kavin Bryan and a beauty from ace midfielder Jermaine Hue, Harbour View romped home to the win.
The visitors seemed to be in disarray, having arrived at the ground about 20 minutes prior to kick-off and forced to play in shirts that were not designed for the competition - an obvious embarrassment for the sponsors Wray & Nephew Limited in a game broadcast live on TVJ.
However, they held the home team level until the 37th minute when defender Christopher Harvey picked out Hue with a masterful 60-yard diagonal pass on the left. The midfield general, noted for his gifted left foot, changed the ball to his right and in a jiffy, unleashed a beautiful bender which nestled into the net, well out of the reach of Elvis Hart's flailing hands. It was the first goal for Hue since his return to the club from an overseas stint, and it did justice to the pass from the back. It got worse for Village a minute from the interval when Bryan weaved his way into the box before firing hard and low into the far corner.
And in the final minute of play, Hue set up Bryan with a neat through pass for the former Police National striker to register his league leading 14th goal of the year. In other games yesterday, Arnett Gardens edged Seba United 3-2 at the Tony Spaulding Sports Compplex and at Frome, Reno blanked Naggo's Head 5-1.
With only two rounds remaining, Harbour View lead with 68 points, 10 ahead of Portmore United. They are followed by Reno on 56, Waterhouse and Tivoli Gardens on 49, August Town 41, Arnett Gardens 38, Village United 37, Boys' Town 36, Seba United 30, and relegated teams Wadadah 23 and Naggo's Head,18.
Teams: Harbour View - Dwayne Miller, Christopher Harvey, Clifton Waugh, Lovel Palmer, Gregory Simpson (Robert Scarlett 67th), Donald Stewart (Gregg Taylor 78th), Richard Edwards, Kemeel Wolfe (Nicholas Dodd 69th), Jermaine Hue, Fabian Taylor, Kavin Bryan.
