I stopped by the Lockhart Stadium to watch new look Reggae Boyz in their Wednesday morning practice session.

The players went through some light drills on a half field with two full sized goals. A lot of emphasis was on positional play with Bora stopping the session constantly to stress what he was trying to convey. He is a coach that gets involved with the plays, runs around with the players and stays on top of the action. The players seemed pretty relaxed and went through the session without anything impressive or outstanding. They also worked on some set plays and corners.

Had a chance to chat with the ever cool but hard working Howie Bell, team manager for the Reggae Boyz. He indicated that the team chemistry has been good and that all the players are working hard. Bell said he noticed an overall spirit of optimism with the players and that even the NPL players seems energized with the arrival of Bora.

The team that is going up against Switzerland is composed of about 8 under 23 players, Taylor the u23 captain, Reid, Moody, Virgo, Harrison, Finlayson, Davis and Powell, which are amoung the core that they are building on. Other players not on this trip includes Pierce, Morrisey, Plummer who were on the Hong Kong trip, Shelton, Priestly, White and Nathan Koo–Booth absent for various reasons. When Jamaica plays Panama, Bell expects that Bora will juggle the players some more as he is constantly evaluating them. He said the goal is 2010 and that is why the focus is on this age group.

Bell thinks that Bora is a good choice and says that organization and unity is constantly stressed to the players. Bell would like to see the team able to create more scoring opportunities and better finishing and that all players should be capable of scoring, not just the forwards. He highlighted Taylor as a player that has shown the ability to score important goals.

I also met Bora and struggled to understand him verbally. I must credit the players as they seemed to understand (i hope) what he was conveying to them on the field.

In response to my question on his impression of the players, Bora said he was happy with them, happy with the spirit they are showing, that they have more than lived up to his expectations. He likes the progess and is expecting much more improvements from them. When asked about the deficiency of the team and what needs the most work, he immediately said “everywhere, as all areas must be strong and no single area is better than the other...this is why they will train hard to make the team better”. On his views on Jamaica he said “so far he was happy, everyone has been nice and everything is going ok”.

On my way out, I had a brief chat with Crenston Boxhill, President of the JFF. He said that he is very confident that they made the right choice in Bora and was happy that they finally got him. He made a good point that sometimes the public expects too much too soon and that many fans are not looking at what they are trying to achieved in the long term.

I will post some pictures`later

Good job Jagga, thanks for the report. Next time you speak with Boxhill please suggests to him that he needs to get a proper marketing team with particular reference to the non publicity of this match.

Is that guy juggling the ball one of the players? Why does he look malnurished?

We need to get him on the "Grace" nutritional program right now.

Yes, Bora was always running with the players. He would stop play, quickly tell them what he was looking for and quickly start the play again. The players were very focused also.

One thing that struck me was some poor "first touch" with some of the players. That is something I will be looking at in the game against Switzerland.

It's owned by the school district I believe and is used for American Football most of the time. But it was the home for the Miami Fusion. It's one of the nicest mini-stadiums I've been to. Cozy and well designed.

Jagga or anyone

Do you guys know the capacity of that stadium and about how much it cost to construct? Even if I have to call them I would love to know the capacity and how much something like that cost to construct.

Do you guys know if that would be public record? I wanted to know if most of the cost came from materials or labour and if we could duplicate stadiums like those in Jamaica?

I think even smaller stadiums like those with a good field is not out of our reach now that we have FSC showing the games

http://www.answers.com/topic/lockhart-stadium

Info on the stadium it says $5 million US and we have to factor in the cost of land plus labour. I believe we could construct a 10,000 seat stadium like this in every parish for around $1 million US.

We could make the materials in Jamaica(thus providing jobs and helping the manufacturing sector) and employ people to do the maintanance. The majority of revenues would come from not only gate receipts but sponsorships, rental for other activities etc.

Having a stadium like that as part of a complex would also fuel the growth of sports tourism thus killing 3 birds with one stone.

jt and Karl thats another idea for the "table"

It cost $5 million to refurbish it in 1998 I think. If you want to get a feel for how much it costs to build a quality "smaller" sadium, look at the ones the MLS teams have built recently.

Great reporting Jagga, way to keep the forum informed.

As I sit here in my hotel room in S. Korea it just reinforces the fact that the internet draws us together. I was having forum withdrawals like a cold turkey smoker. Boot up the laptap and got my fix. \:\)

Jagga, if you do get a chance again to speak to Mr. Boxhill; please convey to him that the Reggaeboyz fans are not too happy with his administration lack of transparency which was promised when he campaigned for president.

Not to change the topic but CNN International, no stop carry the news about the Pakistani coach that died suspiciously. Black eye for the CWC and our image once again.

Building the stadiums is possible but maintaining them at a high level for 10 years is another story and even higher $$$.

It is good to see our top NPL U23 players get high level competiton. I remember in 2004 the technical gap between the local-based and foreign-based U23 players was quite wide. Keep working, Taylor, Reid, Moodie, Virgo, Harrison, Finlayson, Davis and Powell.

No Chisel the cost of those stadiums are high in relation to land cost and stadium construction.

We don't need those large stadiums we have to crawl before we walk and I am very sure that all of us have seen those high school stadium in every state in America and I know we can start off with those for now and as we grow then we step up and refurbish but for now we can use those scaffolding type stands instead of the damn concrete sore-eyes up there at constant spring.

Let us start small please. 5-10,000 seats is enough for now and I say $1 million US is too high a price. I figure the stadiums should cost half that.
