It's Jamaica's term for a Fair weather fan.
The types of fans that praise the team when they win, but disown them and curse them when they lose.

They basically jump on the "Bandwagon" when the team is riding high. and hop off when we are going downhill.

However, it can get confusing, since people like myself who point out problems with the management of the team in hopes of making the team even better (win or lose) are also referred to as wagonists by those who refuse to see the benefit of improving management.

Being called a wagonist is supposed to be negative...like an insult...but if wanting the reggaeboyz to be stronger makes me a wagonist then you have to put me on that long list. heh heh

Greetings,
'wagonist' as used by many ,here ,refers to those fans who show their support of the Boyz only when they win, but are unfairly critical of the team when it fails to do well. They show their support only in times of success. It is derived from the expression "jumping on the band wagon".
The word also often refers to the new supporters of the Boyz whose interest in the the game has only recently developed ,since France, but otherwise know little about the players or the game.
The word is used ,loosely' at times as one might find himself decleared a waggonist if he poses a pentrating question for thought and discussion, or simply asks a genuine question seeking information about the team or players or whatever.
Personally I like this word alot. It does capture, rightly or wrongly, the image of the individual who pretends to support the team and the players....
But as you may soon see it is frequently directed at some of the most informed members of this forum and ,as such, is unfortunately misguided.
I may even be declared one for not 'properly'defining the word.
The word is a beautiful one though, and it demonstrates the Jamaican's love of language.
Stick around and you will see how wrong I am.
Ate logo.

Hear mi Samba...

Waggonist dont have one thing to do with football or fans.

In fact waggonist is basically someone who joins the bandwaggon, and does so without clearly stipulating or having his own viewpoint.. Another term.... Herd Mentality.Similar meaning but not exactly the same. One sheep jump over the fence, the rest follow. Waggonist: one sheep jump over the fence for a reason. The rest follow the hype, not the reasoning.(the bandwaggon)

Or a perfect example is how we all dont understand the meaning of waggonist but all want to use it...They are following the hype the term waggonist implied without understanding its real meaning. Or those who are quick to say Jennifer lopez is a good singer but cant name one good tune she has done but due to the hype they jump on the bandwaggon.

The way it was introduced on this forum was not wrong but not correct either as it grouped the people who could think for themselves with different reasoning as the waggonists purely bcoz coincidentally they all agreed but seeked to make the real waggonists, look intelligent when it was blatantly obvious they had no reasonings for the arguments they put forward which saw them dissolve into the inevitable heap of emotions. In other words Samba... Dem all run out of lyrics and as their last line of defence they seek to belittle their opponents.

LYOD's Interpretation:::
It's Jamaica's term for a Fair weather fan.
The types of fans that praise the team when they win, but disown them and curse them when they lose.

Waggonist and fan is not the same. A fan is someone who is for argument sake fanatical about something or someone and has the right to change his or her opinion or be critical. A waggonist is there for the hype or what he or she can get.

Can there be a fanatical wagonist? Is this term a contradiction? Does there exist that individual whose goal in life is to be a wagonist, and who fanatically strives to achieve this?
I am not convinced that the two terms are mutually exclusive.
