We must be like Jamaica - Honduras footballer
Dec 22
With the buzz in that country that Honduras are favourites to qualify for the next World Cup
along with Mexico and the United States, Honduran national footballer, Julio Cesar 'Rambo'
Leon, has warned his countrymen that they '"must act as humble like Jamaica", if they want
to qualify for the World Cup Finals.

"I love my country," Leon told La Tribuna newspaper, "but we have to be realists and understand
that we are only growing little by little. If we believe that we are now 'big', we are going down the
wrong path."

Leon, a devout Christian who plays for Platense in Honduras, said none of the six teams in the
CONCACAF are favorites, and only those who believe in God will get the victory. He used Jamaica
as an example of the humble calf who continues to suck the most milk.

"We believe that because they are black they do not know football, they only sing and dance
reggae. We underappreciate their quality and Christ does not like those things. We have to be
humble and continue to work hard."

Jamaica, Honduras, Mexico, the United States, Trindad and Tobago and either Costa Rico or
Guatemala will battle for three spots to the World Cup finals in Japan/Korea 2002.

Jamaica tackle Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium in Kingston in the first game on
February 28.

I read that too and i was pretty upset, but it took a big man to admit that openly in the media. On my Job i talk football with a Mexican guy all the time,he has told me that, that is how many of our Latino brothers feel about all the Caribbean island ballers. It is sad to think that them being second class citzens like Black people and they think about us that way.

Please 'ites,
Are we really surprised?
All we have to do is to look back on past contributors like coco and the winner to see that. That comes as no surprise for me. Let us hope fuller and the new generation can prove them wrong again in the 'office'

What a shame, it is the year 2000 and people are still stuck in their arcaic way of thinking. When will people start to realize that blacks are just as smart and talented as any other race. It makes me sad as I am bilingual and educated children of hispanic and white origin who look up to me. I remember sitting in an airport in San Salvador, El Salvador (on my way to Coata Rica) and listening to two female speak ill about a black man who was seated in the airport. They did not see me but because I speak spanish I understood what they were saying, it made me sick and scared at the same time to know that people like these look down on us. We must make our environment better so that we can be insulated from the wiles of the devil. If the politicians of Jamaica would wake up and do right for our beloved country, then none of us would need to be in this or any other country. Don't forget that all of our National Heroes are black and back home we never knew racism. Maybe I can only dream of a Jamaica that we can all escape to.

Peace

Yes, it is a shame. Hopefully, we can make some contributions in the soccer world like the Africans. We desperately need a professional league.

Yes 'ites,

I give the man some credit for bringing it up, but as someone said before. This should be no surprise.

Unfortunately (I don't like it but it's true), I have always been of the opinion that latin americans tend to be very racist. We just don't know it because we may not all speak spanish. You will, however, see it in actions. Some use the fact that they speak another language to convince themselves of their superiority.

I once saw two latin women being served by a black woman in a grocery store deli. After the women received their stuff one of the latins (apparently disappointed that this elderly black lady did not move quickly enough for her) called the server a "little black bitch..." in spanish and left.

Say the shit in English so everyone can understand so at least I know why I'm beating your ass.

In Latin american countries there is typically a a great disparity in wealth. great class separation. The rich have kept a stranglehold on all the wealth to the detriment of social development and broadminded social education. Often these countries are less stable economically so money talks. There has never been any interest in developing together.
So tradition, and the will of the few rich pervade and become the ideals of the country.

This tradition comes from male dominated tradition of white people from Spain where men are supposed to act one way, women are supposed to dress up pretty and look like dolls (appearance is everything--you still see it everday on spanish t.v. all you see is dolled up women with very little talent dancing and singing...ALL DAY. You don't believe me...turn on your TV to the spanish channel right now and tell me what you see!!!) and servants are supposed clean up their shit. They tend to look down on anything not white (or "not rich" this is an underlying theme...don't miss it)think anything not white is inferior.

BOTTOM LINE CROWD-A-PEOPLE, WE ARE NOT EVER GOING TO GET FULL RESPECT UNTIL WE GET "CASH." CASH MEANS POWER. PEOPLE SEE US AS SECOND CLASS VERY OFTEN BECAUSE THEY SEE THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE POORER AROUND THE WORLD...EVEN IN OUR OWN COUNTRIES. LOOK AT THE MOTHERLAND AFRICA. TO THEM THAT INDICATES YOU MUST BE INFERIOR BECAUSE YOU AREN'T CAPABLE OF MANAGING YOURSELF.

They do not consider the fact it was they who took everything from us. Just that we were stupid and couldn't develop our own shit so it had to be taken.

Africa is the key. Once your home base falls, so are you bound to fall with it.

Which gives rise to my question...WHY WAS INDUSTRY NOT DEVELOPED IN AFRICA. I understand the theories of the influence of climate and lack of permanent living arrangements. Can or will someone offer an explanation.

(you might as well, seeing as how nuttin else nah gwaan right now)

Be careful in pointing to North Africa. While Black Africans played a role there, My (maybe mistaken) understanding is that a great deal of the influence there was from Arab peoples.

Somebody publish a book or tell me what happened so I can go fix it.

PEACE!!!!

I must point out that while things are slow to change, I have to believe that there must be an immense redistribution of wealth going on now with all the black educated black people coming up, and all the athletes and artists getting paid. Don't you think.

Big up Magic Johnson who has made major strides in investing in the black community.

Jab you can consider yourself lucky that you are not spanish. I am sure you have noticed this. Many black spanish speaking people feel that they are Hispanic and are not black. They feel that they are somehow superior to us english speaking black people. However, they either can not see or choose not to see that even their white, brown or indian(mexican, latin american)spanish brothers think lowly of them. Jab you are clear in your identity so these things become obvious to you. Our Jamaican background gives us this clarity and we can thank God for this. The only shame is that our political leaders have used the economic and educational inequity created by slavery to exploit our people for their personal gains. Creating this exodus of our people. I too long to return home, and if i was single i would, even if it ment sacrificing my life. The more we are exposed to the world the more special what we have as Jamaican become clearer. Be thankful Jab you can see even if the view is not pleasant sometimes. Don

Jah B I envy you...When I was a school I you to cuss and skul spanish class...my argument was mi naw go need dat..mi naw live a spain(thinking about it now, what a difference if the teacher took time to explain it's importance),my son loves french and so I encourage both him and my niece the importance of learning other languages especially in this I.T. age my brohers and sisters.

I have to say that hearing that qote of the honduran christian reminds me of one of the reasons I love poor people. They have a tactless way of being honest and truthful sometimes and in more than one way.

I take gigo's stand...surprised!!!

We shouldn't be,but instead of getting involved in the spanish inquisition I always prefer to critisize ourselves...

1..Bcoz of this reason,I shouted loudly I hope for us not to think lightly of our World Cup fame.Nuff vex cause we made it...Nuff shocked about our sudden claim to fame..There are a few that love us.We cant let them down. Our musicians sing all the time how people want to flop our show.We ourselves must read in between the lines of the words spoken by the Honduran...Humble ourselves..God offered us a lifeline to fix up ourselves but what have we done???

2..A lot of us think we are world class bcoz we make it thru the last campaign.I dont think we get enough respect from others, neither do I expect it..But I do expect to hold my head high as a Jamaican where ever mi trod.(But then nuff Jamaicans would of done that regardless,ca a so we stay)But when will we realise that everyone is watching us.

3..And that is why I put down the JFF..Thanks for bringing us this far. But much more respect will be due to the person who can carry us further...Our football has no foundation...Jus talent...We used to bawl that we had no monies to develop nothing...We got a little thru the WC campaign. We should of invested this wisely.Use the little to make more.We should gather up our talent and disperse and focus it to our benefit.(How long will we be paying millions for foreign coaches)

4..Should we really care what those latin countries think of us...We have already conquered in cricket..Athletics..Boxing..We all a run tings in certain winter sports..Jamaicans influence all over the world(Bush right hand man is Jamaican.)We influence latin music no matter how nmuch they try to deny.Just as Shaggy I think said..Black people are educating and emancipating themselves from mental slavery(a long process but its happening). My only fright is that the people in charge down a yard dont sell out everything and mash up everything b4 we realise how good and powerful Jamaica really is.

5..But then...I strongly believe all these statements are just made public just to create a vibe amongst us(ca dem know black people have attitude)and take our focus away from our goal..

First the trustworthy trinidardian and now the christian honduran.Forumties mi chat nuff and nuff guy no like some of my talk BUT MI NUH CARE....mark my words....The think he's all that american soon say something also...The mexican naw say nothing cause they have always thought they were the best(what a shock they have coming to them)The others all think we could spoil there party...

We are a threat to them but my fear is that we are more a threat to ourselves and we dont know it.

Hey
Let's go easy on the bredren from Honduras.A lot of what these people say is a a result of them learning the white man's version of who we are through the media. How could any national Footballer not see that 2000 European champions had Blacks comprising almost half of their team. Cameroon & Nigeria are by no means taken lightly on the world stage. Plus look at the number of blacks playing in all the important league around the globe. A statement like that tells me how well "learned" this guy is.

The education system in the caribbean and north america did to us what the media has done to this poor young man. That is to give us our history from the white man's perspective only.

If you dont believe me check out how organised was the Yoruba kingdom or Dahomey at the time europeans came. They were in some repects better organised than some European counterparts. But after 450 years of trading humans all the other industrties perished. Plus the whole landscape was reshaped thereby destabilizing the whole continent. All this was systematicall done so that the whites could control.

I could give a lot more details but the point is we should know why Africa is where they are today and recognise that 450 years of decline is never going to be easy to recover from.
I happen to work with whites,Filipinos, Indians and Pakistanis, all of whom tend to figure Blacks are inferior. All I man do is to show them up outperforming them, so the Reggae Boyz should remember that statement and jus fix them business the next match.

Agreed Countrie, like you I work in Toronto and the Indians and Chinese... Oh Lord, I neva see a set a people dislike black people so inna mi life. I thought whites were bad but it seems they took what the white man do to us and reciprocate it ten fold and bun wi wit it (Trinidad is another example). Where as the white man will give you a slim ounce of respect dem Chiny an coolie give wi NUN WHATSOEVA. I still cannot believe it especially like how we were all oppressed in one way or another by white man. Some Indian man even darker dan poor ole me and still a gwaan so.

Me outperform dem all the while at work and dem still nuh gi mi nor no odda black man any respect. Dem instead try to backstab you and carry false news. Try to get you out of the job because you getting ahead of them. As for the Italians I use to work for..... I will not even get into that.

I am starting to regret even leaving England. It was no where half this bad there.

That said, there are good Indians and Chinese just like there are bad blacks. Never ending cycle. Sometimes yu juss haffi live wit it. Still i am saving big time to return to the UK. Mi miss my cricket, football and sensible people(North Americans cannot grasp simple concepts it seems - they ask if Denmark is a real country???????? If Amsterdam is in Iraq????)

All I have to say to those who don't believe blacks know football is "Pele, Eusebio, Gullitt, Tigauna, Didi, Rivaldo, Jairzinho, Weah.................."

Peace

Blacks don’t know football? Who is this idiot? The best player to ever play the game is black. Some of the best players that play the game are black. Listen to what those racists Germans have to say about the “black athlete”. That “French” team that won the CUP is ,for the most part, a “black team”. Show me a serious team right now in the world that does not have a black player? Blacks don’t know football? Honduras’ better players are its black players. In a country that is predominantly non-black there is absolutely a disproportionate number of black players on that Honduras team. This idiot needs to apologize to his team and then to the rest of us.

Mi idrens, the tone of this thread was quickly heading to the alms house. We cannot attack and deride the entire Hispanic community because of the ignorance of one idiot. We can be absolutely sure that there are idiots in every culture and they speak many languages. For every Spanish speaking idiot there an English speaking fool. For each insults to blacks spoken in Spanish there is an English spoken counter insult against Hispanics spoken in English. I live out here in the US southwest where there is an ample supply of “wet backs”, “illegals”, and whatever other epithets you can come up with. They cut our lawns, work as maids and do most of the menial jobs that no one else wants to do. For that I identify with them, even when they are too stupid to recognize the commonality of our situations. We and these “Hispanics” share the plight of being raped, murdered, pillaged, displaced and trampled on. For that we are brothers in the struggle for human rights, we are soldiers in the defense of “suffering humanity”.

Sounds kind of preachy but it’s true.

Guys read what Leon said carefully.

Those remarks are not his own reflections on blacks. He's merely repeating what many Hondurans think about Jamaicans in making his point that they must emulate the humility that Jamaicans exude.

As for Hispanics, we must be careful of labelling the group as racists.

They're many Hispanics who realize that they are looked on the same way (status wise) as blacks by many whites (at least here in NYC); and because of this they tend to associate more with themselves, or with the other minority groups (for example blacks).

Some whites may think Hispanics are “slightly” better than blacks, but generally they are seen as in the same class.

I must put my 2cents piece in. We all know racism exist and in Latin America they are severly impaired because a disparity in wealth and education. Have you ever seen their cities and slums? The garbage and waste water that is ever present is worst than any worst case scenario Haiti. Jamaica bad but not like dem. Is for our politicians and we as Jamaicans to be more helpful to our own fellowman for us to progress. In times like these I remember reciting the National Pledge and the Anthem and keenly reflect on the powerful message they give. My patriotism is unfathomable to Jamaica and my people so hold your head high and overcome ignorance and elitism. NO LATIN AMERICAN NO MORE THAN ME! I don't care what he/she has. I am JAMAICAN and that is ALL. We do not BEG nor BORROW!

I read these posts to see if there is ever any interesting info. on the Jamaican natl. team and it's prep. for the hexagonal. Upfront, let me tell you all that I'm a proud Honduran living here in New Orleans. The header for these particular posts, "Black don't know football!!" caught my attention. Honestly, I'm surprised as to the reactions that many people in this forum have drawn from De Leon's comments. Yes, I'll admit that unfortunately, throughtout Latin America, there exist a notion of racism that has been prevalent since it's post colonial days. But, what I don't fully agree with on this discussion is to label most and all Hondurans racist for the comments of one person which in my opinion have been slightly misconstrued on this forum. As many of you have noticed, the Honduran natl. team is composed not only of mestizo players but also of players with African descent. Honduras as a whole is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in Central America and that is something that fills me with pride because with time, our society has become tolerant to the vast and different customs brought by the different ethnic groups to the nation. Now, let me detract myself from this history lesson and get back to the original purpose of my post which is the simple one of generalizing. I feel that many of us are rational beings and are able to read between the lines on people's comments but everyone is entitled to their opinions. So my Jamaican brothers, keep posting informative posts on you all's natl. team for inquiring minds always want to know.

Jamaicans are always spoken of in a generalized fashion...drugs smoking, rastafarians, reggae music, loud and brash, etc etc.We live with it and do our best to project the right images.Peoples images of us some how do not seem to cause effect as we are a proud and resilient nation. After all..U even have Jamaicans in Honduras....

Two wrongs dont mek a right but Jamaicans generalising about Hondurans being racist should not receive the directed blame of generalising but should more witness Hondurans correcting this so called christian international representative of the honduran football team...

Thats where the problem lies(In Honduras)Not on this forum darlin...Sort out your own people...

jt, I feel that I stated my agreement with the view that racism exist in Latin America and in Honduras also. But we've become more tolerant than many other Latin American countries have ever been. So darlin, nothing has to be sorted out. It's there and we accept it and deal with it. What separates us from the rest of Latin Americans is our open mindedness. Hey, racism is a sad fact of life but once again, we have coincided peacefully with our garifuna brothers to let one opinion by, as you put it,"our so called christian intl. rep. of our natl. team" take away from the fact and the progress that has been achieved within the diff. ethnic groups in Hon. jt, all the rhetoric aside, and sharing your sentiment, what you all believe and feel towards Latin Americans makes me feel indifferent. Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinions right? What I got my mind on as everyone else is the hexagonal and that's the bottom line 'cause stone cold say's so! Peace out!

I love Latin Americans and I don't really think lowly of the guy DeLeon. He was just relaying what the rest of his gang thought of us and made the mistake of using the word "WE". Maybe he feels this way too. I don't know. He didn't say specifically. Anyway.

There are lots of good Latinos. Yes there are a lot who look down on the negroes in their own country(Cuba, Brazil etc etc), but there also those who respect us and think of us as there brothers.

Den again, I must admit it is only when we are supposed to "gang up" on the white man dem know wi. Hate wi odda wise. What a shame

I have a feeling nobody especially her family wanted Jennifer Lopez to date Puff Daddy because him is a negro. Also, after Shaft came out many Latinos said they were disgusted to see a black play a latin american drug lord from Dominican Rep. HELLO????? Last time I checked Sammy Sosa and Pedro Martinez were of African descent. Whats up with these people????

Different opinions fi real..elpelusa...respect still...Let me welcome you 2 this site of the world famous and internationally renowned Reggae Boys..I hope in the future you will not only partake in our discussions but convert some of the latino football topics to this site....

When this topic first bust..(came out)I laughed. The thought of Deleon being a racist did not cross my mind(But it did highlight that this uncivilised behaviour still existed in Honduras(other ites extend this to all central americans and latino's))
It made me realise how other countries see us as a threat while we havn't even realised our potential.(And by that I mean the heights of sucess we can aspire to...coz we all know if Jamaica has a fully fit and available team...damn...)

So I directed my reply towards Jamaica...But I do find it difficult to accept someone being tolerant towards racism...This is more an option for those who receive it and not those who dish it out or are more unlikely to receive it..

So though I can see where Deleon was merely highlighting an issue and you are separating yourself from racist views while pointing out that generalizing is unfair try and look at it from a Jamaican point of view..I jus cant imagine what would of happened in England if he made such a statement.

Racism should not be tolerated..It should be eradicated....Even Fifa endorse that.

Peace back at U...elpelusa..

By the way whats your view on the pay per play situation in Honduras...
