is what kind a fraud tactics the man a use If you going to cite something cite the WHOLE thing, not just the words you like.
Jose Roberto Wright, a former FIFA referee who saw both athletes play, sided with Pele.
``Maradona was exceptional,'' he wrote in a column Friday in the Rio sporting daily Lance. ``I saw his art up close. He was truly extraordinary. But he doesn't merit comparison with Pele because he was a complete player.''
And how can you use the words of a jealous coke user (who for his own benefit says Pele is overrated) to establish that he is better than the very man he attempts to deride.
Maradonna should do pennance for even DARING to question or to tarnish the the lustre of the great Pele. Pele showed his graciousness of the field by complementing Maradonna on his skill. That Maradonna would spit on this class is indicative of the person he is a -- a disrespectful Coke addict.
I have seen games where Pele is so in control of the game and is so adroit and adept with the ball that as he is dribbling he purposely and intentionally dribbles the ball off the backs of the boots of opposing players. No stress. Just skill. The ultimate control. That is why -- as Maradonna puts it -- he has time to turn and choose.
Maradonna should just cool and take his place in the king's court, along with the other greats (questionable term for Maradonna given his lack of class) like Cruyff and Rivelinho (who might be better as well). There was also a wicked baller from eastern Europe that I saw some old footage of -- either Poland or Russia -- but I can't remember his name...I guess he must not have been all that great.

(1) I fully agree with Delano about the inherent bias in the survey in that it does not allow people tuned in to football but not the internet to weigh in. (See Africa and many others).
(2) I don't disapprove, but it is always noteworthy when a country that I consider to be very racist towards blacks (in spite of its 50% black population--note closely how much brothers represent brazil nationally) promotes one of those it would otherwise oppress.

Pele-Maradona row defused by FIFA ruling ROME - The Pele vs. Diego Maradona row was defused by soccer's world governing body, FIFA, after president Sepp Blatter said two Players of the Century would now be chosen at Monday's gala awards ceremony.
In a sudden twist to the furor surrounding the vote for the century's best player, Blatter said votes would now be split between the Internet and FIFA's magazine. Blatter said votes registered on FIFA's website would allow "younger members" to choose their player of the century.
Votes from readers of FIFA's magazine and an international jury would choose a second player of the century, with both awards being given at Monday night's ceremony. Until Sunday, it had been FIFA's intention to pool all votes from Internet and FIFA magazine readers to choose only one player of the century. Blatter's comments Sunday open the way for both Maradona and Pele to now get an award. The sudden decision to present two awards will raise suspicions that FIFA did not want to see Brazilian legend Pele, winner of three World Cups and scorer of more than 1,000 goals, left out in the cold.
According to reports from Buenos Aires on Saturday, top Argentine football officials said Maradona was way ahead in the polling, with 78,000 votes to Pele's 26,000. Votes were registered on FIFA's website and by readers of the international body's magazine.
Blatter confirmed Maradona would be coming to Rome after speaking to his wife on Saturday evening. Maradona had initially threatened not to come if it was clear he was not going to win.
Pele touched down at Rome's Fiumicino airport Sunday, apparently unfazed by the furor surrounding the ballot. "Each era has their best. I am already content with the prizes and rewards I have received in the past," Pele said when asked about the vote. "People called me the king in 1958 when we won the World Cup. That is good enough for me," he told reporters.
Pele hoped to share the stage with Maradona The rivalry between Diego Maradona and Pele raised its head again when the Argentina star left the Fifa award ceremony before the Brazilian received his "Player of the Century" award in Rome.
Fifa officials had defused the embarrassing situation over who should be named Player of the Century by giving awards to both three-time World Cup winner Pele and Maradona.
The governing body originally planned to name only one "Player of the Century" with the winner being decided from a combination of votes from Fifa's website, the body's magazine and a grand jury.
But amid reports that a cyber-blitz by Maradona fans had the self-confessed cocaine addict leading with 78,000 votes ahead of Pele on 26,000, the awards were split up into an Internet Player of the Century and a Fifa Jury Player of the Century.
Respect
And after originally threatening not to attend the ceremony, Maradona left the gala dinner after receiving the internet award and before Pele received his accolade.
"I want to go home," said the 40-year-old, who left accompanied by his wife Claudia and his agent.
Maradona also hit out at the decision to award Zinedine Zidane the World Player of the Year Award, before explaining his early departure.
He said: "In a trio of Zidane, Rivaldo and Figo, Rivaldo should get it easily. I don't agree at all with Fifa's decision.
"I had a pleasant night in Rome, where I met old football friends, such as Paolo Rossi and Tardelli.
"It was nice to get a warm welcome from Sepp Blatter. But I didn't like the fact that I had to go on before Pele. I just didn't like it. I grabbed my prize and left."
Pele said: "I would have liked Maradona to be there to join me on the platform, but he had already left."
Maradona had earlier thanked Fifa for respecting the votes of the people, adding that he dedicated his trophy to: "The Argentinian people, Fidel Castro, my wife Claudia and all the players in the world that I love and respect.
"The people voted for me. I feel good in my head, serene. I'm happy and proud."
