Documentary Challenges Jesus Image

Updated 4:43 PM ET March 27, 2001
LONDON (AP) - Was Jesus dark-skinned? Was he actually born in a cave?
"Jesus: The Complete Story," a new documentary television series co-produced by the British Broadcasting Corp., considers these questions in its attempt at a purely scientific investigation into the Messiah of Christendom.

"The combination of new scientific and archaeological discoveries with a reevaluation of the historicity

of the Gospels has allowed us to tell the story of Jesus in a fresh and exciting way," co-producer Michael Wakelin said of the three-part series, to begin broadcast April 1.

The documentary is to be broadcast in the United States in its entirety on April 15 on The Discovery Channel, which co-produced it.

For the series, a computer-generated image has been created to suggest what Jesus' face might have looked like, contrary to the fair-skinned and fine-featured image familiar since medieval times.

The new image was created by a forensic artist at the University of Manchester using the 2,000-year-old skull of a Jewish man from Israel. Cues on hair and skin tone were taken from frescoes of Jewish faces painted in the third century.

The result is a dark-skinned, curly-haired man with a round, robust face and a stout nose.

The idea of a darker Jesus is becoming more accepted by Catholics - a dark-skinned Jesus was selected in 1999 for a special millennium-edition of the American independent newsweekly, the National Catholic Reporter.

The series goes beyond the skin-tone question, challenging another widely accepted image of Jesus - his birth in a wooden stable. The program argues he was more likely born in a cave.

It also questions whether Judas betrayed Jesus to the Roman authorities, suggesting that a mistranslation could mask that fact that Jesus worked with Judas to provoke his own arrest.

Using diverse historical accounts the documentary weaves a tale of how a young carpenter may have been inspired to lead a pacifist rebellion against the establishment in Jerusalem, launching a religion now embraced by 2 billion people.

Remember the Hamilton JahB post? Black Jews?

What you a say now my brethren?

Peace.

For those who are read the bible this is nothing new. It is clear in Revelations 1 Vs 13-15. "And in the midst of the seven candlessticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girth about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like WOOL, as white as snow; and his eyes were a a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass as if they were burned in a furnace"
Chapter 2 Vs 18 "And unto the angels of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass"
I saw the preview on TV last night and it was not shocking to me as I always knew who Jesus was. That is why you will never see a picture of a white Jesus in my house. People form that region where Jesus was born can never be white. I coulda pull a Hamilton Israel pon unoo and talk bout King Melchezidek(sp) but mi nah go dweet.

Peace

Anyone who reads his Bible would be able to tell that Jesus is not white, and that his skin tone was dark and his hair like wool. It doesn't hurt to read the Bible it could only serve to edify you. You have to admit there are some interesting story in the Bible.

God bless

I agree that jesus wasn't a white man. I don't know too much about the cave v.s. stable thing, all the Bible say is a manger. That Judas thing is foolishness to me...

Greetings and a whole heap a respect.

Does really matter if Jesus was Black? Why him dont do something for him Black Bretheren. Look at the state of BLACK today.
In fact it seems to me that he is a White man.A really bad one at that. As a scientific investigation, maybe it is an interesting theorethical question. I as a Black man take no pride in the 'fact' of Jesus' Blackness.
Is it possibly another White trick to keep Black people 'Black'? Get up stand up!

I think the question we need to ask our selves is "did jesus really exist" the answer is clear because there is no evidence that jesues realy exist. To understand religeon is to take it out of the romantic , the mysterious, and the mystical and expose it as havining no historical realism or boundreis. The only boundries these religions have are that of the writers imaginations. We as a people need to understand that GOD IS NOT A RELIGEON BUT A WAY OF LIFE.

How do we know for sure that anyone existed in History? If a person died five years ago we can see some evidences of his existence e.g. a photograph. The problem is that how do we know for sure that anyone we know from
history existed before the camera was invented. The only thing we can do is accept a concensus of opinions from different sources by people who had no stake in admiting to the persons existence. In the case of Jesus Christ the Historian Josephus was such a source. Josephus was not a Christian, he was a Jewish Historian who wrote about the historical existence of Jesus Christ. A lot of people talk about the
color of Jesus skin but they don't understand the things he stood for. A lot of what He said if practiced today would eliminate things like prejudice.

This look like it is going to be an interesting topic.

Maybe the reason why he dont do nothing for his black brethren is probably bcoz he is blackk.. heh heh..

Seriously though reading the top post from TrueTrini mek I continue to say, this is a story adopted by the whites who were europeans, they took from the Romans, who took it from whoever, etc etc, but mainly developed to control the world and now that the show is floping,it sound like them ready fi admit say him black originally but also sound like they want to discredit their own adopted god (coz they control things with their own god now.Mr. Money)but degrade blacks as usual by saying it was jus another black rebellion against the system...

GOD IS LOVE.
God made us in his own image.
We all have the ability to show that image.
Though parts of the JESUS story could possibly be real,To me the bottomline is until we
Learn to love ourselves,
then we wont be able to love anything our anyone.
True love is what will save this world..
All the other things will destroy it...Hence the End of the world is more than likely nigh.

That passage alone should be enough to start a new cult..

Then again I must not joke about these things. If dem a look for a scape goat them good fi all come fi mi.

Jesus was a great soccer player and captain! He had 12 deciples which was a formidable team. I think John the Baptist was the goalie...he dips to save many. One day, they had this big game, and Judas sold them out. A great loss! They missed the world cup that year...and many of the world missed Jesus.

He (Jesus) is still playing with the Reggae Boyz today in spirit.

Greetings

There was no intention to offend although my atheism will certainly offend some. I disrespect no one's belief despite the sarcsastic tone of my first posting.
To those that I have offended please answer this question. What difference does it make that Jesus was Black? This an entirely different question from, does he exist? Really though, what difference does it make?
Big Mountain, who took the penalty kicks? Did they have set plays? Did they have to play with a hope and a prayer? (Sorry I couldn't help he last one)
Two love.

Greetings brother...
There is plenty of evidence that someone named Jesus Christ existed in that period. Many historians today accept the fact, there is more evidence that Jesus existed than there is evidence for Charlemagne. We have the testimony of people who saw him, the people like Josephus and crew who wrote about him. You have the Bible (I speak of it as a historical document here, not as scripture) and its writers who claimed to have seen Him with their own eyes.

I think your question should more "Was Jesus who He said He was" rather than "Did He exist?"

And if this discussion takes off, mi want di 'ites fe know that a man nu haffi be "stupid" or "deluded" or any other negative thing if he says that he is a Christian or he believe in God/religion or anything like that. Ditto if he says that he doesn't believe in God, or he doesn't know.

My goodness.....people who gives a shit. Believe what you want to believe because I strongly suspect that this argument will go NOWHERE.

Get over it. Who gives a shit what color he was...it is the message that is important. The mere fact that there is no explicitly clear indication in the bible as to what he was indicates that it may not be of the importance you people are placing on it.

Everybody knows white people have him all in a blond hair and blue eyes. We know its bullshit. Lets talk about something..... ANYTHING else. Jesus! (no pun intended).

I know I'm the number one person when it comes to going off on a tangent..but please...

I apologize for sounding selfish, but talk about something we can actually discuss with some real factual support...all this talk based on four or five words from the bible and nothing else is called spinning you wheels.
