It's true,why have rules if we are not going to uphold them but I personally dont believe that rules are commandments but purely guidelines in the same way I dont believe people should be degraded and disregarded bcoz they didn't pass them CXC and O levels...Another argument of mine backed by Zephania is plain and straight...Unlike the African State of Equtorial Guinea we dont need participants...I dont think we are entering the WC qualifiers bcoz we dont think we could remotely win..We want to win..I cannot agree with throwing good money after bad for the mere fact of a fading image of participating in a world event...No country in this universe waste money on a WC football squad to compete..They do so to enhance football in there country and promote other factors about there country,create monies,some countries even believe this will create employment and all the other reasoning plus the hope of winning in the same way that most athletes walk behind there flags but also know how the Olympics enhances your career its the same way countries know success at the Olympics produces embassadors,in my opinion Peta Gaye nuh ready for that commitment and responsibility...In what way should we be confident of an outstanding performance from someone who couldn't even be bothered to keep on top of her game,What respect does she deserve..my apologises if her ill-form was due to unnecessary and unforseen circumstances which she is not ready to talk about...Delano and all the Guys that rue about Ottey and her behaviour...I agree JAAA messed up..I agree the whole fiasco should never have come to this...I agree..a total disregard of the rules...I agree Ottey was using Blackmail and is selfish,I think there is more to the dissing story,jus badmind people making more of it,and I agree that Peta Gaye was treated poorly and possibly unfairly but I also agree with the reasoning of the JAAA to exclude PG bcoz of her form and include Ottey...And jus to remind my fellow Jamaicans that are a bit emotional about the whole scenario,Australia has spent millions on this Olympics with the almost surety of netting nearly two billion....If all the stars around the world failed in their respective qualifiers and pure mediocre's was in attendance the Olympics would be a joke jus as Jamaica would be a joke sending imposters instead of the queen..do u think the JAAA would exclude PG if she was a true contender?? I have no doubt that in the Sydney Olympics,Jamaica will give her best...Protest or not...The two Americans with the black gloves showed thier protest,but they won...Nobody in the world can take that,so DELANO,ITS NOT WIN AT ALL COST BUT BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY make your mark...My point

Gentlemen, we cant blame the athletes. I have read some points and both sides are right. JAAA is the organization( or should I say group because organization is misleading) that should be blame. They are group of laggaheads. Jamaica will run well in the games.

Give Ottey her chance, it's her life and her reasoning to run for Jamaica. She is a special athlete, the kind that needs special treatment. You can't replace an Ottey overnight, just like ballers like Pele, Maradona, Allan Cole are not born everyday.
Give Ottey her run, and let us move on with life, it is just the Olympics.....

P.S. Yes the Jamaican Olympic Federation is at fault here for not being clear at the trails about their intensions of including Ottey. But look at the case of the Colombian female weightlifter that was given special consideration by the Colombian Olympic Comitee to be on the team, she could not compete during their trails but was included as an invitee, and now she won gold for Colombia in the games, because the comitee knew that she was a special athlete. The gold she won was a first such feat for all of South America in the sport.
Ottey laughing and bouyant now but he who laughs laugh laugh best. I wouldn't be surprised if Dowdie stays in America and do what she pleases since this is a selfish World. When man like Boyd and Whitmore say dem naah play for Jamaica again because they would rather earn their money at clubs than to play for a nation that don't stand a chance of passing the World Cup first round much less win a major tournament, I hope some of you will have the same philosophy. Nope you will start cuss how dema sell out. Don't it?
What would be nice is if Dowdie becomes the new Jones(the greatest female sprinter ever) in the next two years and blow the whole world away running times Ottey could only dream bout. Then when she dis the JAAA and just run for America or even Uganda for that matter I hope nobody have anything negative to say bout her. When all we can send to the Olympics is a 50 year old Ottey (who doesn't even finish half the race in the first heat by then) it will be remembered what was done to bright future prospect and it won't be done again. Hopefully.
I hope for Ottey's sake Marion Jones(the track goddess) has an awful day, make that a superduper-awful day lol, because that is the only way anyone is going to overcome her magical feats. Injuries as well.

Another thing for Ottey to think about is Jones have five golds on her mind so Ottey should be the favourite since she only have two on her mind.
Personally I don't want to see an American win especially Jones(too much hype) or Greene(dat boasy little yank), but neither do I want a selfish Italian(too much greed) to win either. Lol
You see it fit to cuss Dowdie for losing form but Not Ottey for her callous behaviour. That alone seems odd coming from someone who sees himself as objective.
Also, Are you saying that the Golds we won in the 1940s and 50s are of less value than the bronze and silver Ottey won? If so allow me two years of laughter.
We train at american facilities, some by American coaches. Remember most of these people coming out of American Colleges,
Herb Mack, Wint and dem man deh beat Americans off talent alone. We were a nothing country in terms of sport in dem time deh. If dem man did only win bronze like Ottey it would tek alot longer for Jamaica to earn her respect. Is dem man deh strike fear into Americans. I don't remember Ottey making anyone go, who is this Jamaica? A Herb Mack and Massa Wint. Whose statue in front of the National Stadium at present? Him win two Gold(and a sivler). Him win the first gold we get. Give me what he has achieved or even Herb Mack, or even Quarrie over what Merlene achieve. Yes, she achieve alot but guess what you said people only care about champions and Merlene was never an Olympic one.

Hail to all forumites. I was the originator of this thread of discussion and I have been alternately pleased and appalled at some of the responses that have been posted.
Big up to Dutchman whose views, I have to say, mirror my own.
What has happened should not be blamed on either Ottey or Dowdie. The JAAA's went wrong from day one in their handling of the matter, and as I predicted it got ugly - but much, much uglier than any of us would have thought.
Irrespective of our thoughts on the matter however, I am once again reminded of just how ungrateful Jamaicans can be. That an athlete of Ottey's calibre should be torn apart and maligned by the very people she has represented over the past twenty years is nothing short of disgraceful.
Not even the parent of Ms. Dowdie herself has sunk to that level. His behaviour has been above reproach and some of us would do well to take a page from his book of philosophy.
Whether we agree or disagree as to Ottey's right/privilege to be in the 100 , to be calling her names and wishing for her downfall - directly or indirectly - is in extremely poor taste.
Ottey's only mistake in my opinion, was the unfortunate remark made about retiring immediately if she could only run the relay. As I have said before, she should just have let her running do the talking for her.
Dowdie is 23 years old and has a wonderful career ahead of her if she wants it. The great Marion Jones had missed the last two Olympics for various reasons but has not lost sight of her dream. Neither has Ottey, who has been robbed at the highest level on at least two occasions and who has persevered. For that alone,I am willing to give her her due and forgive her one moment of very bad taste.
As someone who has represented Jamaica in other areas in the past, I can only say it is moments like this that make you wonder about being a true patriot.Taking criticism from outsiders is one thing, but it is the annoying and pathetic habit Jamaicans have of turning on their own at the drop of a hat that makes us sometimes contemplate representing other nations who want to pay us handsomely to defect.
And any footballer, or cricketer or musician or athlete who has gone this route will tell you that while money is great, it is the feeling of not being appreciated by their own people that has lead them in different directions.The reason many "cross over" is NOT solely financial - it is because of the sheer bad mindedness exhibited by the people of their own land.
I guess the excellent Courtney Walsh had better not make the mistake of getting injured, returning to form and then saying that if not selected for a Windies tour he will retire from cricket altogether... I suppose we will all then jump up and cuss him that he is old, he must go sit down , and let Rose and the other youngsters have their turn - irrespective of whether they are bowling better than him or not. Sad, sad, sad.
Delano, my brother, your campaign of vilification against Ms. Ottey has been the worst of all. You have issues and I suggest you search your soul to ascertain why you are taking this all so personally.
You should attempt to be a tad less emotional in your statements about other human beings who are flawed - as we all are.
Merlene Ottey has earned it and your fellow forumites deserve some respect- even if you don't respect yourself.

Well well well.... I hope this discussion is all over now. I really sorry that I got involved in it any at all. I agree with dheron that Ottey only made one mistake and that was to try and black mail the JAAA. I had supported her up until that point.
Delano, my Canadian brethren. I read your posts very carefully and although I respect your opinions, I can't help but coming to the conclusion that you hate Merlene Ottey with a passion. Cool down my brother.
