BOLTON Wanderers star Ricardo Gardner paid a visit to a school - and picked up an award from Education Secretary Ruth Kelly.
The defender won the "Player of the Round" award for his performance in the fourth round of the FA Cup when Wanderers beat Arsenal.
And while he was at Claypool Primary School, Horwich, to look at the completion of improvements there, Ms Kelly, the MP for Bolton West, presented him with a trophy from the FA. She was visiting the school to present it with an ArtsMark gold award for its outstanding record in performing and creative arts.
Ms Kelly said: "I'm a big fan of the Wanderers and Ricardo, so it was great to be able to present him with his award."
The recent improvements to the school have resulted in larger teaching areas for year five and year six pupils.
There is also a new school entrance with new administration space, a headteacher's room, teaching space for music and other work in small groups, better toilets and a bigger staffroom.
Headteacher Glenys Evans said: "We have had a major building project to enhance our facilities, which is great for both pupils and staff.
"It was fantastic to have Ruth and Ricardo here to share in the celebrations.
"These additions make the school a truly modern primary school and provide excellent facilities for children to learn effectively."
Ms Kelly said: "The new facilities at the school are wonderful and they will be of great pride for teachers and pupils in the future."
Ricardo said he was delighted to have been chosen Player of the Round after the FA Cup defeat of Arsenal. The Jamaican star was one of five players nominated for the award. He polled 37 per cent of the 15,000 votes cast by fans on website TheFA.com
He was shortlisted for the award after his man of the match performance helped to defeat Arsenal and set up a fifth round home tie against West Ham.
In addition to being Player of the Round, Ricardo' was also included in the FA's Team of the Cup.
This guarantees his VIP attendance at the FA Cup final in May - should Wanderers not make it - and a half-time introduction to the crowd.
He also won £1,000 worth of UMBRO football vouchers and is asking people in Bolton to call 07966 24410 to nominate any worthy causes he can hand the vouchers to.
Shouldn't he be sending it back home to Jam; surely there is more of a need there?
