ACC: Vancouver's attacking toys finally on full display May 10, 2012 Martin MacMahon MLSsoccer.com Darren Mattocks celebrates his goal against FC Edmonton
Photo Credit: Getty Images .. VANCOUVER, B.C. – For the first time this season, the Vancouver Whitecaps have a full attacking arsenal at their disposal.
On Wednesday night in the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinals, head coach Martin Rennie demonstrated just how deadly that can be, bringing forwards Sébastien Le Toux, Etienne Barbara and Darren Mattocks (above) off the bench to make the difference.
HIGHLIGHTS: Vancouver 3, FC Edmonton 1
Le Toux rightfully stole the headlines with his pair of goals, but the return of Barbara and Mattocks to full fitness is almost like signing two new players.
“I think all along we’ve known that those two guys are impact players – players with pace, great movement, can finish,” Rennie told reporters after Wednesday’s match. “We’ve missed them all the way through the season, up until now. No one else probably thought about it but we definitely knew that, and those are guys that you could see instantly – they make runs in behind people, they’re mobile, they’re quick, they can beat people on the dribble.
“Darren’s put together a great finish, Etienne’s put together a great run and they were only on a short space of time, and I think those guys will be exciting players for this club. They give us a different dimension and I think we’ll enjoy seeing them.”
Mattocks, returning from a burn injury suffered during a cooking accident in late March, made the most of his time after coming on with 16 minutes left in the 90, scoring a stoppage-time goal which put the cherry on top of Vancouver’s 3-1 victory on the night, and 5-1 win on aggregate.
Barbara, for his part, made his first competitive appearance for the Whitecaps after suffering a sports hernia injury on the first day of preseason. The Maltese forward generated a penalty within his first few touches, rounding Paul Hamilton before the defender got up to drag him down.
The 29-year-old stepped up to take his own penalty, only to be denied by a fine save from David Monsalve, diving low to the right.
“Darren is so, so fast,” Davide Chiumiento, who assisted on all three of Vancouver's goals, said after the match. “So, I think with his runs and everything he can be really dangerous. Etienne has really good technique, and he can protect the ball incredibly. He’s intelligent on the field – it’s exciting for the fans, because that’s two really good players and we look forward to having them 100 percent back with the team.”

Mattocks set for MLS return Published: Saturday | May 12, 2012 0 Comments

A rookie is back, a veteran definitely out. And while some Jamaican players in Major League Soccer (MLS) will hit the road for their next MLS game, at least a couple will welcome competing at home for the first time this season.
Forward Darren Mattocks returns from injury today for Vancouver Whitecaps against New England Revolution, the first time in seven weeks the highly regarded rookie will suit up for MLS action after sustaining burns in March.
Mattocks came on as a substitute and scored his first professional goal for Vancouver on Wednesday. But that was in a Canadian championship semi-final tie against a lower-tier club, not in MLS - North America's premier football league.
Mattocks has played only a minute in MLS due to injury, but the 21-year-old's confidence has not dimmed.
"You can expect a couple more goals," he said on Thursday.
Vancouver need them. Despite a solid start, including a current three-game winning streak and sitting fourth in MLS' nine-team Western Conference (WC) with five wins, two losses and two draws, the club has scored only nine goals in nine games.
MISSING OUT
With injured national striker Omar Cummings out at least for the next match on May 16 at DC United, Colorado Rapids will miss goalscoring quality. The 29-year-old, in his sixth MLS season, could be inactive up to four weeks with a grade two ankle sprain suffered Sunday against FC Dallas. He won't force a return.
"No need to rush," said Cummings, who started the first 10 games scoring three goals.
Colorado, with Reggae Boy Tyrone Marshall who started against FC Dallas, are fifth in the WC with five wins and five losses.
Still no goals for Jamaica midfielder Dane Richards, although Wednesday his New York Red Bulls won their third straight - all by a 1-0 margin - against Houston Dynamo.
Like Cummings, Richards has one assist, but the speedy midfielder hasn't scored in 2012 after seven strikes last season. New York, second in the 10-team Eastern Conference (EC) with a record of 6-3-1, play at Philadelphia Union tomorrow.
SLUMP
Today slumping Houston Dynamo, now 2-3-2 and seventh in the EC, host DC United at the new BBVA Compass Stadium. For Houston's Jamaican pair of Jermaine Taylor and Je-Vaughn Watson, it will be their first home game of 2012. Taylor played the full 90 minutes against New York, but Watson saw no action.
Montreal Impact (3-5-2), with Reggae Boyz Donovan Ricketts and Shavar Thomas, hope to rebound today at home against MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy.
On Wednesday Montreal were booted from the Canadian championship by Toronto FC, which have no points in MLS, on a record eight-game losing streak to start a season and sit last in the EC. Goalkeeper Ricketts, a former Galaxy starter, played the entire game but conceded a goal to national teammate Ryan Johnson in the 2-0 loss. Defender Thomas started but was subbed in the 45th minute.
Last weekend Columbus Crew and Portland Timbers drew 0-0. Reggae Boy Lovel Palmer cemented his starting spot with Portland, playing the full 90 minutes, but national teammate Shaun Francis didn't, restricted to a six-minute sub's appearance. Columbus (2-4-2) are eighth in the EC. Portland (2-5-2) are last in the WC.
Today, Columbus host FC Dallas. Portland play at Palmer's ex-club Houston on May 15.
Meanwhile, Jamaica-born head coach Robin Fraser, his struggling Chivas USA stuck just above Portland in the WC with three wins and five losses, play tomorrow at San José Earthquakes (7-2-1), second in the conference.
Jamaican connections, in midfielders Khari Stephenson and Simon Dawkins, have been key in San José's strong start. Both players have scored. Stephenson also has two assists, the English-born Dawkins one as San José have scored 21 goals, the most in MLS. Ryan Smith of Chivas, another English-born player with Jamaican roots, has two assists.
NB. SIMON DAWKINS JAMAICAN!!!?? Damn, another forward at our disposal again! TAPPA!!

Omar...The author meant to say that the San Jose team has scored the most goals in the MLS so far...

Darren came on in 62 minute of match vs New England revolution with Vancouver down 2 goals in game and almost make an immediate impact if only the referees didn't make outrageous call. He fairly won a ball deep in Revolution 18 box, but he was sited for a foul on the defender after they both went up for a loose ball. The defender faked contact and referee blow whistle when youth headed for goal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbbQq4AE76g

When will you apologize to the writer? The writer said Dawkins has one goal and San Jose as a team has 21 goals, most in MLS.

Darren Mattocks getting his first professional start vs. Seattle on May 19.
Keep working hard, Jamaica is watching.
The man start and was a tear pon the field except for scoring goal. Him missed about 3 goals today. Even if him did just score at least one of them it would've been a very good outing in his first start. I have to give him a C today because no happy with him missing so many chances, especially those are chances he would usually put away. Young man FOCUS mon. From him missed the first chance in first half (where he try to go around defender when him right in center of goal) doing something he doesn't usually do when him so close to goal, mi now it was gonna be a long day. Him usually hit them ball right pon goal. The goalie did not have to do a thing with those chances he missed. Overall he was a handful for the defenders in the game but he can't afford to miss them kind of chances.
He would have been the talk around the MLS yesterday if he did convert three of his chances or even one. Most of those chances was just him and goal keeper to beat. 99% of the time he would've put all those chances away so I expect him to bag some goals when he gets those opportunities again. The Seattle defends was beaten numerous times. He was terror out there.

Dam.... so that means mi cant cuss Shelton no more. Well at least his movement off ball is good by getting into goal scoring position. Hopefully next time he'll put those chances away or he will be back to riding the bench...

Youngsters Mattocks, Salgado impress in Seattle draw May 21, 2012 Martin MacMahon MLSsoccer.com

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The prevailing mood in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ dressing room after their 2-2 draw with the Seattle Sounders on Saturday was one of disappointment. How else could they feel after Fredy Montero’s curling 90th-minute effort robbed them of a Cascadia derby win?
But though the present is a little discouraging, it’s hard to think that the future won’t be bright for Vancouver after the performances of young forwards Darren Mattocks (above) and Omar Salgado, who led the Whitecaps attack while Eric Hassli and Camilo rested in preparation for Wednesday’s Amway Canadian Championship final second leg (8 pm ET, Sportsnet One).
HIGHLIGHTS: Vancouver 2, Seattle 2
“Darren Mattocks was fantastic,” head coach Martin Rennie told reporters after Saturday’s match. “His movement – He was so sharp. He got in great positions, an obvious area he has to improve upon. He caused them all sorts of problems, as did Omar on the other side.
You have to give guys a chance to show they’re up to the level and I think those guys absolutely showed they are, and I think they showed they’re going to be exciting for the Whitecaps over time.”
For Mattocks, it was his first start in league play, and while he missed several clear-cut opportunities, he stretched Seattle’s backline and got in behind defenders on several occasions.
While he acknowledged that he missed opportunities during the match, he was encouraged by his overall performance and said his misses weren’t down to first-start jitters.
“It’s weird, I never get nervous,” the Jamaican said. “I’m always excited but at the same time I’m always humble and I know I have to put in a good shift for my teammates.
“Seattle is a very good team, one of the elite teams in MLS, and for myself to create so many chances, not only for myself but for my teammates, that’s really good. I think we’re right at par with the best teams in MLS, so we just have to move forward from here and see what next week brings in Toronto.”
With so many big games over the past few weeks, between Cascadia Cup and Canadian Championship matches, that can only help the club’s two promising youngsters accelerate their development.
“It’s really a lot of experience for us,” Salgado said. “For the players that have that experience, they come in knowing what to do in these games, and they’re amazing games to play in.”

It's only a matter of time my yute before the net start rattle. Keep up that confidence and sharpnes.
I'd say Tappa should just leave you alone and let you sort out your ting on the club team is. 2014 is two years away, U kno affi get in the R'Boyz squad this June; shoot fi September then you'll have had a lot MLS games under ur belt.
