Houston completed a trade to send right winger Danny Cruz to D.C. United in return for allocation money. Cruz, who started for the Dynamo in last November’s MLS Cup final, had been locked in contract negotiations with the Dynamo since the end of the season. With a resolution unlikely, Houston pulled the trigger on a deal they believe will be beneficial to all involved.
“In my opinion, D.C. gets a player that I think will help them and we got some allocation money that will help us with some plans for the near future,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti told MLSsoccer.com on Friday afternoon. “All around, I think it’s a deal that works out for everyone.”
The move provides the club with some latitude as they look to improve their club across the board for 2012. One position of focus has been right wing, the spot Cruz held.
Houston currently has Colin Clark and Je-Vaughn Watson as players who can contribute on the right flank. Re-signing Cruz would have added to their ranks but it also would have created a log jam if the club can follow through on bringing in another option on the right side.
“We’ve got a couple players at right wing that we’re looking at very closely that would be foreign signings,” Canetti said. “This move opens up a roster spot for us to fill in that area and also provides us with some much-needed salary relief that will clear the way for a secondary move.”

Lets not get too profound. Landon Donovan is clearly a better player than Brian McBride ever was. He may be a spoilt little brat, but he is the best producer the US have had.
Not that I care anything about US football or MLS for that matter, but how can you say that when they had players like Tab Ramos or even Claudio Reyna....

Because Landon Donovan was a better producer for his National team than both of them. Tab was one of the most skillfull baller in CONCACAF, but his window of solid production for the US national team was relatively small. Wicked baller sameway. Claudio was a solid midfielder, but never a game changing player after he left Wolfsburg. Injuries turned him into a defensive midfielder. Landon has been a match winner throughout his US career. From under-17 through senior team.
You want know whats my problem with him, he needs to take more shots and move forward more you know im sure he has the quality he just needs more confidence
The Houston Dynamo and Valencia CF will play on May 31 in the fourth edition of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup. Valencia will be the second European club that the Dynamo have played and the first from Spain's Liga BBVA.
“We are honored and privileged to be hosting such a prominent international soccer club in Valencia,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said. “Their participation in this match helps bring major credibility to the tradition we are building in this event. We expect that the local soccer community will come out in strong support of this match, the first of its kind in our new stadium.”
Partial proceeds from the match will benefit Junior Achievement, an organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness and financial literacy. In the fall, Dynamo Charities and BBVA Compass will work to create a Business in Sports program with Junior Achievement to help foster and create future entrepreneurs.
In addition, Dynamo Charities and BBVA Compass will hold a food drive on the day of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, with all donations benefiting the local Star of Hope shelter. This project is in conjunction with the Building a Better Houston campaign that will kick off in the weeks leading up to the May 12 grand opening of BBVA Compass Stadium.
“We are thrilled to be the sponsor of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup,” said Mark Montgomery, BBVA Compass Houston city president. “BBVA is the title sponsor of Spain’s soccer league, La Liga, and BBVA Compass Stadium is where soccer will be played in Houston. So it makes sense for us to support this charity event along with the Dynamo. At BBVA Compass, we strive to build a better future for people in the communities where we operate and this event does exactly that. It allows us to improve the lives of needy children in Houston.”
