Steven Morrissey gets two months with Vaasan Palloseura September 1, 2011 | Filed underArticles,Club News,Club Teams,News,Teams | Posted by JamFedadmin
Portmore United’s striker Steven Morrissey has signed a two month contract with Finnish Premier League team Vaasan Palloseura. He will be on loan through to October 31st, 2011 and will surely be a much needed change in the team’s lineup.
Vaasan Palloseura current attacking form has seen them scoring only 17 goals in 22 games this season, which has placed them last in the Finnish Premier League. Steven Morrissey who has appearances with the National U17 and U20 teams, was placed 4th with 10 goals in the Digicel Premier League’s previous season.
Portmore United’s General Manager Clive Marshall had this to say, “This is a very good move for Steven as he will be playing first division football in Europe which gives him the exposure he will need for a possible move to a bigger league system. VPS is a good fit because they need his goalscoring skills immediately so he should get every chance to prove himself”.
We wish Steven Morrissey all the best, and hope his experience will aid him to becoming an even better player.

PORTMORE United striker Steven Morrissey has signed a two-month loan deal with Vaasan Palloseura (VPS) of Finland's Premier Division.
According to VPS' official website, the "aggressive" forward will be on loan to the club through to October 31 2011 and was employed in a move aimed at bolstering a weak goal-scoring attack that has seen them scoring only 17 goals in 22 games this season
[Hide Description] MORRISSEY... fourth on goalscoring chart in last season’s Premier League [Restore Description] 1/1
Morrissey, who has represented Jamaica at the Under-17 and Under-20 levels, finished fourth on the goalscoring ladder in last season's Premier League with 10 goals.
According to Portmore's general manager, Clive Marshall, "this is a very good move for Steven as he will be playing first division football in Europe".
This, Marshall added, will give the forward valuable exposure to top-flight footballl. "VPS is a good fit because they need his goal-scoring skills immediately so he should get every chance to prove himself," he said.
VPS, which is based in Vaasa on Finland's west coast, currently sit 11th in the Finnish Premier League.
The club has played twice in the UEFA Cup in 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 and are perennial performers in the Finnish Premier League.
This is what i'm talking about of players getting contracts without being a part of the R'BOYZ set up. Their hard work will be their ticket out, as oppose to waiting for a call up from the JFF.
The JFF focus must be how can we strengthen the team with "ALL" available pros here and abroad, and not thinking we have to help the youngsters outin our local league; that is hindering our national program and is backward thinking.

Guaranteed if the question was asked of the JFF/Tappa about the invited 9 local base players for upcoming friendlies they would more than likely say "we trying to expose the locals."
What the hell is this, what country that worth it's salt in football thinks this way, none.
Burrell you are responsible "only" to better the league and infrastructure, instilling a professional environment where the players can develop and get contracts abroad.
Where does the JFF get off thinking they are responsible to expose players, that is an agents job along with a player's hard work.
You look at the bench of the upcoming friendlies and it's all local base, it shouldn't be this easy to be on this squad especially when these players are not dominant in Jamaica.
This is not forward thinking, this "welfare" thinking....

As you might know, Morrissey came to Finland and Vaasan Palloseura (VPS) just two months ago. He was in the starting eleven on 5 games and scored 4 goals, so he had moderately good success in here.
Since the team most likely would like to keep him for the next season (season start on mid April and lasts until the end of October), I would like to ask you guys how long will his contract with Portmore United last? What's the schedule of the Jamaican league? Do you guys think that he'll be available to play in Europe next summer?
Here you can see his best performance (in my opinion) so far in VPS: http://www.iltalehti.fi/nettitv/?32145730 His amazing goal in that game can be seen at time 1:20 forwards if you are too impatient to watch the whole highlights.
On the side note, fellow Jamaican O'Brian Woodbine was a success on VPS too, he was rented for money to Finnish champions HJK in the middle of the season. HJK will decide by Friday will they want to buy the option of Obi's contract or will he return to VPS for the next season.
The Jamaican Premiere League season goes from September 2011 until May 2012 over 3 rounds. Due to the financial situation of the league and clubs. Morrissey should be available during the winter transfer window.
Thanks for the swift reply! What kind of sums of money are we talking about when it comes to guys like Steven? The transfer window of Finnish league closes on April just before the league starts, so we might have to wait for the resolution of this issue for awhile. Playing a full good season in Finnish league would open a lot of doors in bigger leagues for him, I truly hope that we'll be able to sign him.
Is this just a misunderstanding in my part or what is going on in here?
edit: By the way, it seems to be really hard to find information about Jamaican league football online, the teams don't even seem to have homepages or Google is badly misleading me.
