Reggae Boyz to face Colombia in Florida Published: Friday | August 26, 2011 0 Comments

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Captain Horace Burrell has expressed delight at the Reggae Boyz securing a friendly international against Colombia on Tuesday, September 6 at the Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, USA.
The match, which was confirmed yesterday, will be played on the second of two FIFA match dates during the period with the first being Friday, September 2 when Jamaica's Boyz are set to face Ecuador in Ecuador.
"I am happy that this second match has materialised as it will no doubt help as we fine-tune the country's preparations for the start of next year's CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers," said Burrell.
"To get two reasonable strong South American teams is also really pleasing, and is a testimony to our continued climb up the FIFA rankings.
"As we climb the rankings, we are getting more respect from the stronger football nations, and my hope is that we will continue to grow from strength to strength and attract even more stronger opponents in the future," he added.
Ranked
Colombia, whose Under-20 team reached the quarter-finals of the just-concluded FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which was held in that Colombia, is presently ranked 35th on the FIFA world rankings.
Jamaica are ranked 43rd, and third in CONCACAF behind Mexico and the USA.
Burrell, meanwhile, said a similar team to that which will compete in the Ecuador clash is expected to be assembled for the Colombia encounter.
"The coaching staff has extended invitations to several of our top overseas and local-based players and I am expecting a number of them to accept it," he explained.
"This means that we should have a strong teams for the Ecuador clash and the Colombia encounter. I just hope that the game in Fort Lauderdale will get a lot of support, as Jamaica and Colombia both have a lot fans in the area."
INVITEES: Overseas-based - Dwayne Miller, Shavar Thomas, Jermaine Taylor, Omar Cummings, Ryan Johnson, Demar Phillips, Damion Williams, Rudolph Austin, Dane Richards, Jevaughn Watson. Local-based - Eric Vernan, Xavian Virgo, Richard Edwards, Keneil Moodie, Montrose Phinn, Andre Vanzie, Richard McCallum, Adrian Reid, Troy Smith, Alanzo Adlam, Alvas Powell, Andrae Campbell, Andre Bernal, André Blake, André Clennon, Chad Bennett, Gariece McPherson, Jason Watson, Jhamie Hyde, Kemar Foster, Neco Brett, Ricardo Morris, Romario Williams, Theo Brown and Vincent Earle.
Well, it's good that we are getting these teams to play us, but the concerns over personnel still exist. Whether at altitude or sea level, we need to improve the team.
We are getting Colombia at a good time, because they are in disarray as they scramble to appoint a new manager.
Points to the JFF for getting another game.Same squad no indication of any new players. We are wasting these tougher games using players that cannot carry us to the world cup. We should be useing the under 20/23 players in games agaisnt less establish opponents as part of their ongoing development.ie St Kitts, St lucia they need games also.

Tappa will need to tap the minds of the special ones (Mourinho and Villa-Boas) to get a result out for this squad and hope Falcao does not show up for Colombia.
We are missing a few crucial midfielders such as Omar Daley, Keammar Daley and Jason Morrison. Let us hope and pray no one get injured this weekend.
This is a very strong squad, and while they underachieved at the Copa, if they can solve their coaching problem they can become one of the new powers of world football. This is why our local lads are likely to suffer greatly.
Falcao and Rodallega spearhead Colombia squad
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP)—Atletico Madrid’s new signing Radamel Falcao and Hugo Rodallega of English Premier League club Wigan Athletic are in Colombia’s squad for friendlies against Honduras and Jamaica.
The 18-man squad will be managed by interim coach Leonel Alvarez as the Colombian Football Federation continues its search for a replacement for former coach Hernan Dario Gomez.
Gomez resigned this month after reports he attacked a woman in a Bogota bar.
Argentine coach Gerardo Martino, who stepped down as Paraguay coach after July’s Copa America, turned down an offer to succeed Gomez on Thursday.
Colombia plays Honduras on Sept. 3 in New Jersey and Jamaica three days later in Fort Lauderdale in warmup matches for World Cup qualifying starting in October.
Colombia:
Goalkeepers: David Ospina (Nice), Luis Martinez (Once Caldas).
Defenders: Mario Alberto Yepes (AC Milan), Luis Amaranto Perea (Atletico Madrid), Cristian Zapata (Villarreal), Pablo Armero (Udinese), Camilo Zuniga (Napoli).
Midfielders: Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (Lecce), Christian Marrugo (Deportes Tolima), Freddy Guarin (Porto), Carlos Sanchez (Valenciennes), Gustavo Bolivar (Deportes Tolima).
Forwards: Hugo Rodallega (Wigan), Adrian Ramos (Hertha Berlin), Teofilo Gutierrez (Racing, Argentina), Radamel Falcao (Atletico Madrid), Jackson Martinez (Jaguares), Dayro Moreno (Tijuana).

With this match been playing in Fort Lauderdale, we can call up a few more ballas, in case of injury, visa/passport issues or any other reason.
Lovel Palmer (Portland Timbers), Kieron Bernard (Orlando City), Lance Laing (Ft. Lauderdale Strikers), Dane Kelly (Charleston Battery), another quality goalie and perhaps 2-3 UK-based players.
Damn talk about spearing expenses.Mi a begin to beleive seh Tappa expect this is the group of players that will qualify for Brasil 2014.If thats what him and Burrell think then we can just start building towards 2018 then. No new or past UK base players in any of the two squads named against quality oponents?????? On the other hand im GLAD to see mi breathren Earle get another call.

We are using amateurs, semi-pro and players in above average pro leagues to carry us. They can take us so far and we will be embarassed. Also we don't need to be calling up people on the fly and expect them to perform.

One practice that the JFF needs to stop is naming the squad to the press as local-based and overseas-based. Name the squad by position, PLAIN and SIMPLE.
With the passion displayed here on this site over the R'BOYZ I don't think that sentiment is shared in the Jamaica Diaspora a yard.
We here have easy access to the internet, less economic crisis here than in Jamaica, people a yard for the most part are not sharing in this passion we have for the national team. That's just reality, and the bleak attendance at home games is a testament to that fact.
I say this also because I cannot find one article of a news organization in JA asking the JFF pointedly about players they stated they are looking at in the UK.
Where is the news media's passion?
How come we cannot get info as to the UK players the JFF said they are seeking to add to the squad? It's mind buggling; Jamaica's media coverage of the R'boyz needs step up to international standards.
We have a team ranked 43rd and there is no credible media coverage of the overall team issues & players abroad.
The JFF need to understand that a succesful soccer nation is not without extensive media coverage of everything concerning the team & players. And they wonder why Jamaican fans are ridiculously outnumbered at every away match in the USA where a lot of Jamaicans dwell.
Where is the JFF marketing and PR skills? where is their understanding of how to use the media to expand the popularity of the team & players?
Imagine no one it seems can get any info as to inclusion/exclusion of certain players, whether injured, in contractural talks, this is a joke. We here have to be figuring out these things for ourselves.
You go on the JFF website and it's a yawn.....
THey in Jamaica it seems have only a slight idea of how to bring a national team into the spotlight, with the use of clever marketing of it's players, using the media, attracking "name brand " players (Sturridge, Pennant, etc); and genuine understanding of how to be a part of this information age.
To the JFF i say this: this is the information age; without information you won't keep your fan base because no one will know or understand what you are doing and they get disinterested.
The mere fact the JFF have not gone all out to get, say a Sturridge, a Beckford, Pennant etc. shows they don't understand what a personality as they can have on a team, and to attracting a wider fan base for the R'boyz.
I didn't want to say it but The JFF sitting in their offices in JA, not being exposed on a weekly bases of how football is conducted on the greater world stage are a bit behind the times.
This is not the 1970's where local base players formed the nucleus of national teams, not any more, unless it's a top league of the world. Football has changed as far player selection for club & country.
In club football they "buy" the best players; in national teams just one relative of a certain player belonging to a nation and they send for him especially if that player plays in a top league.
No true football nation is settling they are casting their net far and wide for talented players with any inkling of ther national blood.
Now here comes a 43rd ranked Jamaican team that calls 9 semi-pro players to it's squad to face 2 nations that has not only players from thier superior league to ours, but players from premier league, Serie A, and La Liga on their squad.
THe JFF really needs to adopt world standard football mentality instead of the amateurish stuff that we've being fed all these years.

Amateurish reporting. Name names. Is the list different from the Ecuador list? Typical rag bag crap. Relying on Jamaican media for news is like walking in a dark tunnel without a flashlight.
Chito- Not a bad call. I am not sure the JFF understand we the fans know's that the team selected is not our best and should not try to pass that off as the best players available to us. This game is going to be a defining game in terms of future support and where the team and some of the players goes from here in a time when the fan base is dwindling locally.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced that defender Lovel Palmer has been selected by the Jamaica National Team for an international friendly against Colombia on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Palmer, 26, joins three other Timbers – midfielder James Marcelin (Haiti), defender Steve Purdy (El Salvador) and defender Rodney Wallace (Costa Rica) – who have been called up by their respective national teams for upcoming FIFA international match dates.
Palmer is scheduled to rejoin the Timbers in advance of the club’s road match against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park on Saturday, Sept. 10.
A native of Mandeville, Jamaica, Palmer has 19 caps to his credit and has been part of the Jamaica National Team pool since 2005. He helped Jamaica claim the 2010 Caribbean Cup, subsequently earning a spot in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Palmer made his international debut for the Reggae Boyz in 2005 at the age of 20. He also represented his country at the U-17 level, playing in 2000 FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers.
For the friendly against Columbia, Palmer returns to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the same place where he made his first international start for Jamaica on March 21, 2007.
