New football 'boss' for JFF
Published: Friday | May 13, 2011 0 Comments Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

Brazilian Walter Gama was announced as the new technical director of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) yesterday.

Captain Horace Burrell, president of the JFF, made the announcement during a press conference at the federation's head office in New Kingston.

Gama, who is due here next week, will be assisted by three of his countrymen, Alfredo Montesso, Luciano Gama and Joao Brigatti.
Burrell announced that all four coaches will be given a three-year contract, with a combined salary of US$50,000 per month.

"They are very qualified, they have knowledge of Jamaica, some of them, and all in all, I think it is going to be a very big boost to our football development," he said.

seeking support

Burrell added that his administration would be seeking support from corporate Jamaica to help fund the salary of these coaches.

"I am not too worried about sponsorship for these coaches right now. We already have some funds from FIFA, which could sustain these coaches for at least six months, and hopefully, within this time that we will get some sponsors and we will be able to continue with the programme," Burrell said.

Gama is no stranger to Jamaica, as he was an assistant coach to Rene Simoes, during the Reggae Boyz's 1998 World Cup campaign.

Alfredo Montesso, who has also had stints as a physical trainer with the senior team from as early as the 1998 World Cup campaign, will now be an assistant coach to Theodore Whitmore with the senior team. He will also be in charge of the Jamaica's Under-23 Olympic team.

Luciano Gama, who is the son of Walter, will take charge of the men's Under-20 team while Brigatti will be goalkeeper coach.

All this while the Tappa (the New Karate Kid) is in Brazil with Mr. Miyagi........

Dress rehearsal for later? Tappa just get us to the Hexagon and you will have the entire dojo behind you.....especially if we get New Zealand in a play off. ;\)

Has anyone seen one company being bought out by another and watched the sequence of events that followed? \:D

Just chalk it up to experience Mr. Edwards. "Mentorship" can be used as a tool to remove you......Ok, young grasshopper.

Dear Mr. Edwards,

Did you see the writing on the wall when you were in Brazil filling out "psychological forms" for YOUR players? Yes sir, did you? Sir, while you were assigned to shred papers the Gamma clan .......was not only doing your job but also making a case as to why they should be hired? ;\)

Edwards learns from the Gamas

LIVINGSTON SCOTT With Jamaica’s U-20 REGGAE BOYZ in Brazil

Sunday, March 06, 2011

Jamaica's Under-20 coach Andrew Edwards said working with Brazilian coaches Walter and Luciano Gama has been an enlightening experience for him so far and he is savoring every moment.

Edwards, who was handed the responsibility of preparing the team back home before they departed for Brazil on Thursday, said suggestions he would have been marginalised when the Brazilian pair took charge of the team has not proven so.

On the contrary, he noted that the two have been very accommodating and have relied on his judgement and experience with the players and have included him in all their discussions and decision-making, and this, he pointed out, can only benefit the team.

"I don't see Luciano and Walter Gama here to take over my job; they are here to help improve Jamaica's football and certainly, I'm learning a lot from them and I'm really excited about working with them," he told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

"They seem very much to know what they're doing and although there is a little difficulty in terms of the language, Luciano speaks very good English and Walter expresses himself quite well.

"But the good thing is that I'm included in all the meetings and every decision that is being made, and I have specific responsibilities just the same, so I really don't feel excluded," he added.

"It has been comfortable and workable and things are looking good so far," Edwards told the Sunday Observer following yesterday's morning session.

The St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) coach has been so impressed with the father and son pair that he has started to record the sessions, for documentation and future analysis for his personal development as a coach.

"It has been a tremendous experience over the two sessions in terms of what I have learned as a coach and in terms of our communication and camaraderie... and I'm kept in the loop of all things so it can only get better from here," he added.

One of my own brethen saw my post and called me paranoid!! Everything chris still..... I knew if it was not Simoes it would be someone else from Brazil.

(1) Every sign was pointing south.
(2) If Jamaica makes the Hexagon and gets into a play-off situation with a South American team....then what?
(3) Gamma and his crew showed up Downswell (U-17), Andrews (U-20) during their stints in Brazil. In addition, Tappa was sent to "finishing school" where he was also blessed by Mr. Myagi (Simoes) and the Gamma clan.
(4) When the U-20 went to Guatamala, Tappa (The Chosen One) was flown in later where he "watched"..........

* The only reason why Simoes is not here is the $US50,000 bundle fee......trust me. Now, if Jamaica qualifies.....Simoes could be back in an "advisory" role.

Burrell, in making the announcement at the JFF headquarters yesterday, said the cash-strapped Federation was able to secure the services of the four "highly qualified" Brazilians for a bargain package of US$50,000 (J$4.2 million) per month.

He said he could only guarantee the salaries for six months at this point, and the funds will be re-directed from a US$300,000 (J$25 million) bonus that FIFA paid to each of its 208 member associations.

Why does this one month before the Gold Cup?

I rate the Brazilian as youth coaches but let Tappa handle the senior squad. And why not at least one Afro-Brazilian coach , not equipment manager or massage therapist?

Just my observation......
Burrell has signed these guys to a three year contract and he only has funds to bank-roll his plans for six months. Hopefully, if the Reggaeboyz can make a good showing in the Gold Cup then he (Burrell) can use the renewed interest in the Boyz as a selling point to get the private sector on board leading in to qualifying. Once qualifying starts then (Hopefully) the Boyz can do well enough to pack the stadium and more folks will be on board. Remember, this Brazlian formula has worked (and failed) before so he can still sell it.
Anyway, I smell a "bonus" in there some where for the Brazilians if the Boyz qualify. I suspect that the contracts of the Brazilians are "performance" based.

Bwoy Lincs mi affi gi it to yu. You saw this coming from a mile away. Mi no affi apologize to you because mi always trust you football instincts, but this prediction did give me pause when you made it.

Never saw this coming, but I did say that the JFF is run better when they are bruk and left with no options. Give Burrell a likkle money where he see himself having options and he starts do screwing up the programme. That I did predict.

Watch them f'up morale later when they start scrambling for money again.

Good job by Burrell to have them run our youth program because the only time our players have had a halfway decent youth setup is when Gamma has been involved. Unfortunately it is too late for the Under 17 team.

As for the the Senior team. Tappa is supposedly still in charge of that team and Montesso is his assistant (Tappa claims he requested this and tried to convince him while in Brazil).

This is an interesting link, and the video is "funny" in an interesting way. Yes, Tappa seems to have been intimately involved with the move. I think that it is a progressive step.

Only the naming and preparation of the Reggaeboyz Gold Cup 2011 squad and their preparation will answer that question.

I see this as Burrell and the JFF giving Tappa the best chance to succeed and hold his job.

If he fails, the team is in place to take over for the WC quailifiers.

Its all on him now to come up with the goods when it really begins to matter.

Calculated Move # 1

1. If Tappa and the Boyz do well at the Gold Cup:
(Sales picth by Burrell) - By bringing the Brazilians, I gave Tappa Whitmore all the tools he needed to help him succeed. Government and Private sector we are trending in the right direction please hop on board.
- No backlash from the fans.

Calculated Move # 2

2. If Tappa and the Boyz fail to impress at the Gold Cup:
(Sales pitch by Burrell) - I knew Tappa Whitmore was not quite ready and is still developing as a "young coach" - so I took the necessary steps to bring him some help. The Brazilians are here not only to to help Whitmore but also to help establish the football academy at the UWI. Government and Private sector we are trending in the right direction please hop on board.
- No backlash from the fans.

We havi wait fi see the final GC squad named...

If the top foreign professionals get called, based pon dem league performance over the season so far, with the best of the performing locals...

A month should be enough preparation.

There's another thing we hafi look pon...

Jamaica's performing players are now mostly playing in MLS and the Gold Cup comes in the middle of the MLS season...

Lets see how the MLS coaches react to having to release Jamaica's players to play in the Gold Cup when...

The bulk of the USA's players will be coming from European clubs when their season will be over.

Games within games will be the story of this Gold Cup.

The JFF and Tappa will have to be firm with the MLS clubs.

The right Jamaica side will go into this Gold Cup, probably the most feared team, at the start of the tournament.

Watch this space !
