Jamaica to host U17 Finals

It has been officially confirmed that Jamaica will host the 12-nation Confederation of North, Central American Associations of Football (CONCACAF) Under-17 World Cup Qualifying Finals, after having a successful bid accepted by the regional body.

The tournament will be hosted in western Jamaica from February 12-28, with two of three facilities inspected by the federation's general secretary, Ted Howard, earlier this month expected to be used.

A decision on which of the grounds to be used, Jarrett Park, the New Catherine Hall Sporting Complex and the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium, will be made at a later date.

"I am understandably elated because the current administration is serious about youth development. We are determined to do more than just speak about it, hence our determination and persistence in securing this very important decision to host the qualifiers," president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, told The Gleaner last night, shortly after he got confirmation.

The last and only time the country qualified for the Under-17 Youth World Cup Finals, which was held in 1999 in New Zealand, Jamaica hosted the tournament in western Jamaica.

According to Burrell, the JFF is determined to see history repeat itself.

"We intend to pull out all the stops to ensure that our team is well prepared for next February, which means that we will be looking to assemble them immediately," Burrell said.

"Even with our current financial plight, the JFF intends to do all within our power to expose this unit to international football - both at home and overseas. I will be hitting the phone lines immediately, to see if we can secure camps and possible practice games for these youngsters, which they will certainly need if they are to vie for a place in the World Cup."

Wendell Downswell has been appointed as head coach of the youth outfit, with Boys' Town assistant coach, Omar Edwards, expected to serve as his deputy.

Downswell, a former national coach, was head of the Under-20 youth team that won a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in 2007. Edwards was voted as the top student at the series of coaching clinics held at the University of Technology over the last couple of months.

The last time Jamaica hosted the final round of the Under-17 tournament at the National Stadium, the team, then led by the now-deceased David Hunt, fell just short of qualification in 2006.

"It will not be easy," said Burrell. "We will be up against teams that have many of their players in professional outfits, but we will be looking to give it our best shot."

Hopefully, the squad has been training together quietly during the summer because they will face a tough Haitian squad in a month.

If they advance it will be important to keep the team together hopefully at the new academy at UWI.

Well, our u17 technical staff most take advantage of two important features in their favor:

1. They should be scouting the opponents this week in Suriname and Dominica.

2. Jamaica will have home crowd/field advantage.

The Guyana Junior Jaguars under-17 team takes on Aruba today in their final Group C match of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) World Cup qualifying competition in Dominica.

The local boys are one step closer to topping the group after they destroyed the Netherland Antilles team 5 – 0 on Thursday.

C. Bemjamin opened the scoring for Guyana in the fifth minute while Pernell Schultz continued his good form scoring in the 25th. Deshane Garnett’s 31st minute goal gave the home boys a comfortable lead at half time.

When play resumed, Sherwin Lewis scored in the 75th minute before pressure from the Guyana strikers resulted in an own goal by the Ntherland Antilles. Guyana drew their opening match against Dominica 2-2.

Will we see dis yute in action?

Omar Holness -- Wolmer's Boys

Though only 15 years old, Holness has shown character on the football field that far exceeds his age. Being among the elite youths of our country to have undergone English Premier League trial, his impressive statistics for the season justify him being chosen . Despite playing for barely half of the season as a result of injury, his 10 plus assists and three goals provided great support in Wolmer's' progression beyond the group stages. Eagerly awaiting another call-up from the managing team of the Sunderland Football Club, Holness is determined to improve his game.

Jamaica's bid for U-17 tourney taking shape

Western Bureau:

Jamaica's bid to host next February's CONCACAF Under-17 Football Championship officially went into motion yesterday when the federation's general secretary, Ted Howard, toured and inspected three venues in western Jamaica.

These are the venues that will be used if Jamaica were selected to host the tournament.

"We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will be selected," said Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Captain Horace Burrell, who, along with Howard, flew by helicopter into western Jamaica. "Hosting such a tournament would do a whole lot for our youth programme," Captain Burrell added.

The three venues visited were Jarrett Park, the new Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay and the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium at Florence Hall, near Falmouth, Trelawny.

While Howard did not say whether his report about the local facilities will be favourable, he nonetheless pointed out that countries such as Honduras, Costa Rica, Canada and the United States are also bidding to play host to the tournament, which is one of the premier events on CONCACAF's calendar.

Attention to region

St James FA president, George Evans, who was a part of the touring party to Jarrett Park and the Catherine Hall Stadium, said he would be happy if Jamaica gets the nod to host the tournament because of the attention it would bring to the region.

"We have hosted CONCACAF tournaments in the past and I believe we did a good job of it," said Evans. "In addition, in the previous two tournaments we staged, the Jamaican team did fairly well."

While some amount of fine-tuning will need to be done if Jamaica were selected, Montego Bay's Mayor, Councillor Charles Sinclair, said the JFF would not need to worry, as the St James Parish Council is willing and ready to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the Montego Bay facilities are ready and up to par.

"Whatever is required to have the tournament staged here will be done," said Mayor Sinclair. "We are a city with a rich sporting tradition and we intend to continue to build on what we have."

Reviving western football

Cognisant of criticism that has been levelled at the JFF re its hands-on involvement with football in western Jamaica, Captain Burrell said the bid to stage the tournament in the west is a part of the JFF's mandate to reelevate the western region's football to a position of prominence.

"Players like the United States' London Donovan and Demarcus Beasley came to prominence following their appearance at the last CONCACAF Under-17 Football Championship staged here in western Jamaica," said Captain Burrell. "Should we be selected to host this tournament, I am hoping that we will see a few of our youngsters coming through."

Our first step is qualify for the final round in 15 days time.

Although I am not a fan of Boxhill, his idea to build the youth national team academy in St. Bess was a solid thought.

fyi, All those Western Jamaica facilities are capable of hosting these matches.

Jamaica has a strong chance to make the 2011 u17 world cup in Mexico.

First of all, since Mexico is hosting they are not involved in the qualification process. The CONCACAF final round involves 12 team and four team qualify(not including Mexico).

The early favorites are Costa Rica, Honduras and United States.
