St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) football coach Andrew Edwards sees his appointment as assistant coach to Wendell Downswell as an honour.
Edwards, who guided St Elizabeth Technical to the 2009 daCosta Cup title, was yesterday appointed to assist former national coach Downswell with preparing the country's Under-20 team in their World Cup qualifiers.
qualifications
Jamaica will begin their quest for qualifications in October at the second stage of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) round which will be staged in Guyana.
"Trust me, this means a whole lot ... it is an honour," said Edwards adding that it is just rewards for years of dedication and commitment to the sport.
While it has always been his dream to coach at the national level, the 35-year-old said the call was a little earlier than he had expected.
"Frankly though, I think it has come a little earlier than I thought it would have but when one has worked hard, the rewards will come," said the man who got seriously involved in football while representing Titchfield in the daCosta Cup from 1991-1993.
"As I said, it is a joy to be called to serve one's country but the timing though is a bit awkward coming right at the start of the daCosta Cup season and bearing in mind that I am also a teacher by profession," Edwards said who also teaches at STETHS.
"That aside though, it is a wonderful opportunity and I look forward to all that will stem from it," he added.
In terms of juggling his duties as teacher and coach at STETHS, Edwards expressed confidence that things will work out.

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — St Elizabeth Technical's daCosta Cup coach Andrew Edwards was yesterday confirmed as the assistant coach of the national Under-20 team that will take part in several international competitions over the next few months and into next year.
The announcement came at yesterday's launch of the ISSA schoolboys' football competitions at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston.
EDWARDS...will assist Wendell Downswell, who will be in charge of both the Under-20 and Under-17 teams
Edwards who led STETHS to the daCosta Cup title last year, his second year in charge will assist Wendell Downswell who will be in charge of both the Under-20 and Under-17 teams.
Despite being elated with his first national selection, the former Titchfield High layer and coach, said the job would not be easy.
"It is the dream of any young coach to be asked to participate in a national set up and we all look forward to that opportunity," Edwards told Observer West yesterday.
"I have no doubt the job will be a difficult one and I will be taking on more responsibility than I have ever had before," he said.
With the mentorship of the experienced Downswell however, Edwards said he is confident he will rise to the challenge.
Edwards and Downswell have worked together before with the more senior coach assisting Edwards in the latter stages of STETHS push to the daCosta Cup title last year.
The present state of football in Jamaica will also add to the workload Edwards said, adding, "We will be responsible to help restore some of the sheen to the Jamaican football brand that has been lost over the last few years."
