PRESS RELEASE August 29, 2010
Reggae Boyz to face strong test against Peru
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz will face Peru in a friendly international at the Lockhart stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on September 7. Kick-off is set for 8:00 pm (7:00 pm Jamaica time). The game will be played just two days after the Boyz take on CONCACAF rivals Costa Rica in friendly at the National Stadium.
Ten overseas based Reggae Boyz players have been called to join their local counterparts as the team takes another step towards getting ready for next year's start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. It is also part of the initiative of JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, to keep the team active in preparation of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in November 2010 and the CONCACAF Gold in 2011.
Peru ranked 39th in the FIFA/Coco Cola rankings, had a poor finish in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying play-offs, and like Jamaica is rebuilding with the goal of Brazil 2014. The last time the two nations met was back in November 2006 at the national stadium in Jamaica ending in a 1-1 tie. Alexander Sanchez scored the opening goal for Peru and Jermaine Hue scored the equalizer for Jamaica.
Burrell has stressed the importance of the encounter and pointed out that the Peruvians, who are down to play Canada away the Saturday before their date with the Boyz, will provide a strong test. In the four internationals played by Jamaica this year, they have won two, defeating Canada 1-0 and Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 while losing 2-1 to two time world cup champions Argentina and 2-0 against South Africa in a hastily scheduled game.
In a presentation to be made at the game, Jamaica's Theodore "Tappa" Whitmore and Peru's Nene Cubillas will receiver special recognition awards for their achievements at the World Cup level. Whitmore, Jamaica's most celebrated player is the only Jamaican to score goals at the World Cup. He achieved it against Japan in the 2008 World Cup in France.
Players The foreign-based contingent includes Omar Daley (Bradford City), Donovan Ricketts (LA Galaxy), Shavar Thomas (Kansas City Wizards), Ryan Johnson (San Jose Earthquakes), Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids USA), Richards (New York Red Bulls USA), Demar Phillips (Aalesund FC), Jason Morrison (Stromgodset IL) Shelton (Valarenga FC) and Nicolas Addlery (Puerto Rico Islanders).
The local based players called are Richard Edwards (Harbour View), Dicoy Williams (Harbour View), Kavin Bryan (Harbour View), Oniel Fisher (Harbour View), Ricardo Cousins (Portmore United), Adrian Reid (Portmore United), Eric Vernan (Portmore United), Navion Boyd (Tivoli Gardens), Keammar Daley (Tivoli Gardens), Troy Smith (Village United), Oliver Trail (Village United), Andre Blake (Sporting Central), Jevaughn Watson (Sporting Central), Jermaine Taylor (St. Georges S.C.), Kenardo Forbes (Waterhouse), Devon Williams (Real Mona)
The match is listed on the FIFA site with Peru as the home team. But as to where it will be played... What's odd is that it is only two days after the Costa Rica game:
JAMAICA's Reggae Boyz will face South American outfit Peru in a friendly international in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on September 7, subject to US Soccer Federation's approval for the promoters to proceed.
Both associations are said to have agreed to terms, "but we are awaiting the green light from US Soccer in granting permission" for the game to go on.
"We have signed off on the game with Peru... everything is in place and we are only just awaiting US Soccer for the official go ahead," said JFF president Captain Horace Burrell yesterday.
The game will be played just two days after the Boyz engage CONCACAF rivals Costa Rica in another friendly inside the National Stadium as the JFF continues its preparation for the Digicel Caribbean Cup and ultimately the World Cup qualification campaign for Brazil 2014.
Peru, a western South American country of 29 million people, had a miserable finish in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying play-offs, and like Jamaica, have kick-started their rebuilding early, also with the shared goal of Brazil in mind.
The Boyz team for this game is expected to be made up of home-based players, some from the US leagues and continental Europe.
"We expect to have a very strong team for this match-up, and at the same time we will continue to expose new talent with our more experienced players... though winning is not everything, but it is very crucial, so we will want to follow up that win in Trinidad with victories against Costa Rica and then Peru," Burrell noted.
According to the FIFA 2010 calendar, September 7 is designated as a date for official competition matches.
According to eloratings.com, the game would be the second meeting between the two nations, who first met back in November 2006 in a friendly that ended 1-1 at 'The Office'.
Peru, ranked 43 places above Jamaica on the FIFA listing, last qualified for a World Cup Finals back in 1982 at the Spain-hosted edition. The Boyz, on the other hand, had their only World Cup appearance at the France 1998 tournament.
Jamaica, in their last international friendly, looked an efficient bunch in dispatching fierce rivals Trinidad and Tobago's Soca Warriors 3-1 in the twin-island republic last Wednesday.
So far this year, the Boyz have had only three prior practice matches -- Canada in January, Argentina in February and South Africa in May.

You need a geography lesson. Continental Europe does NOT include the UK.
Does "Continental Europe" include Scandanavia?......If you notice I UNDERLINED"Continental" Europe.........There are no Jamaican players left in Hungary.
Everyone on this board knows exactly what that sales pitch means to the fans..........this is not geography. In typical JFF fans sales pitch.....That is a reality lesson....as far as the JFF is concerned......EUROPE = ENGLAND.......Not Hungary, Not Nothern European/Scandanavian Peninsula.......so don't even get it twisted.

LINCOLN, I think the reason they said Continental Europe was because they are omitting the England based players. Continental Europe does generally include Scandinavia with the exception of Iceland I think.

Boss you know that and I know that.........Jamtl mentioned a geography lesson. Geography is one lesson - JFF speak is another.........The JFF folks know that you can get more fans to Fort Lauderdale by mentioning Contentinal Europe. Most Reggaeboyz fans do not care about scholarly definitions of Scandavia/Nothern Europe Peninsula (Norway, Sweden) etc. Some could care less about the players we HAD in Hungary/Mainland Europe (Rafe Wolfe or Jason Morrison). The "Nordic" folks like Luton Shelton, Rudi "Red Card" Austin, Phillips etc are not exactly selling points for the fickle Reggaeboyz (wagonists) fans.......Real Talk-In JFF speak translation - "Continental Europe" = England. After most of the fans get to Fort Lauderdale and sit down.......FANS - "Where is Fuller?"... JFF- "We said Continental Europe"........
Do you see why I underlined "Continental Europe?"
GEOGRAPHY Anyway if we want to get real technical, we can exclude MOST "Nordic" countries and Euro-Asian states from "Continental/Mainland Europe"......all depends on your audience.......and I slept through Geography........after Hot bread wid cheese...... and some wash (cherry flavored bag juice w/ shaved ice)......class done.

Once again stick with the core Digicel Cup squad, those who play than 60+ minutes vs. C.Rica should get a rest. Once again mix youth with experience and aim for average squad age between 25-24 years old.

Just a warning to the JFF management team, we not taking any excuses about missing passports or visa issues or travel delays. It is up to the JFF to become more professional and organize things correctly.
A few new players should be available for this match such as the following:
THE US Soccer Federation (USSF) has given the green light for the South America-based promoters to execute the friendly international match between the Reggae Boyz and Peru in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on September 7.
While both associations had agreed to the game to be played at Lockhart Stadium with kick-off set at 8:00 pm (7:00 pm Jamaica time), there was an "unusual delay" in the USSF granting permission for the game to go ahead.
BURRELL... this will be a highly-anticipated game
Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) head Captain Horace Burrell could not say what caused the delay, but said high-level intervention saw a swift and favourable response from USA Soccer.
"We just want to thank US Soccer for granting the permission to the promoters so the game can go ahead," Burrell said yesterday.
Already, interest in the game is said to have moved up a notch, with initial promotional activities having started in the south Florida area, a stronghold of the Jamaican Diaspora in the US.
There is also a blooming community of Peruvian expatriates residing in the Miami area, so "a great turn-out is expected for the game".
"This will be a highly-anticipated game since we will be playing in strong Diaspora communities, plus we will be having some of our top and most exciting players. We expect to have people like US-based Dane Richards and the speedy Norway-based Luton Shelton," said Burrell.
Before heading out to Florida on September 6, Jamaica will take on Costa Rica at the National Stadium on Sunday, September 5.
Peru, ranked 43 places above Jamaica by FIFA, are down to play Canada away the Saturday before their date with the Reggae Boyz.
Ten overseas based players have been invited by head coach Theodore Whitmore to join their local counterparts for both the Costa Rica and Peru match-ups.
A noticeable returnee after being out for over a year-and-half is midfielder Omar Daley of Bradford City. The others are Donovan Ricketts (LA Galaxy), Shavar Thomas (Kansas City Wizards), Ryan Johnson (San Jose Earthquakes), Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids USA), Richards (New York Red Bulls USA), Demar Phillips (Aalesund FC), Jason Morrison (Stromgodset IL) Shelton (Valarenga FC) and Nicolas Addlery (Puerto Rico Islanders).
Cummings was invited for Jamaica's last game against Trinidad and Tobago last week, but declined due to a pressing business matter. Phillips was likewise considered by Whitmore, but was injured.
