Should he be given another chance?
He will be given stick and booed almost anywhere he goes.

Marlon King isn't the first English-born player to go to jail and he certainly won't be the last.

Jermaine Pennant, Joey Barton et al et al have all done time in the last few years and it never impacted them getting contracts when they were free to ply their trade again.

Marlon King will be playing football again and even possibly this season; if you can't take 'stick' from the opposing fans, you can't play football in England, simple as and our Marlon is no stranger to hearing a few choice chants from the fans, trust mi.

This youth has given us many a glorious moments in the past, and I would welcome him back with open arms to the national team if he wishes to come back. He did the crime, paid the time, and should be allowed to resume both his international and club career in peace.

If Marlon King was a licensed mechanic and he was convicted of stealing cars and running a chop-shop crime ring, would he be banned from working on cars when he returned?

I really doubt that.........

I truly hope Marlon King can earn another contract and resolves his issues with alcoholism and violence for the good of him and his family.

However, King has served the Reggaeboyz well but it is time to move on. If Tappa is seeking to instill more professionalism and discipline in the squad, Marlon King must be left out.

I know some of the English fans will be against him but the man has served his time and should be given a chance to earn his living.

So, are you saying that the best way to install discipline is to avoid it? Isn't that the easy way out? One of the top qualifications of a good coach is how you mold people of differing egos, emotions, attitude, etc. and blend them into a cohesive unit. Have you seen the movie Gridiron Gang?

That's like a teacher getting rid of all the "slow students" in her class because she don't want to spend the extra effort to teach them.

Dave Whelan 'forgives' Marlon King following his release from prison

Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, has backed down on his claim that Marlon King should never play football again but has insisted the player will not be welcomed back to the DW Stadium after the completion of his prison sentence today.

King was jailed for 18 months last October after being found guilty of sexual assault and actual bodily harm over an incident in a London nightclub, which occurred in December 2008 while he was on loan at Hull City.

Whelan terminated the striker's contract and said at the time: "I cannot really see him coming back as a professional. I wouldn't allow him back in, but I think a lot of other people will allow him back in."

However, he backed down on that stance this morning, telling Talksport: "Marlon's coming out today, he's served his sentence, I'm sure he's learned a lot and I forgive him and I wish him well if he gets back into the game.

"What I did say at the time was I do think every footballer should have a 'passport', a record of any injuries he has sustained in the game and if he has got a criminal record. That should be on his passport and that should be available to any club and any manager who's going to sign that player.

"A lot of people commit crimes and go to prison and what they say is they've served a sentence and they've paid the penalty. It would be wrong of me to say: 'No, he should never play football again.'"

Whelan added: "I was very upset at the time, but I really think you've got to forgive people because we all make mistakes and if he can get back into the game, good luck to him.

"It wouldn't bother me if he came to play against us. But he'll never play for Wigan, I'll say that."

Whelan has made it his aim to persuade the Premier League to enforce his "passport" scheme in a bid for transparency.

"If you're signing a player and he's got an injury and it's not disclosed, I think that's illegal and it should be disclosed. It's exactly the same with a criminal record," the 73-year-old said. "There's so much money changing hands – when I paid £3m for Marlon King, I think we should have had all the information that was available on injuries and criminal records."

This passport shit is a load of bullocks.

Managers who spend the huge amounts that they do on players do their research 90% of the time. especially on domestic players.

Its part of their job.

This chairman knew what he was getting when he signed Marlon King and he admitted as much.

This is just his way of backing down from his original statement that Marlon should never play professional football again.

Many others have gone to prison for worse crimes and continued their careers, why should Marlon King be any different ?

What a load of balonishiskiskaka......any club investing money in any player checks their back ground for a number of reasons:

(1) Is the player a disruptive force.
(2) Will the player embarrass the club.
(3) Is the player a person who takes instructions well?
(4) Will the player be in the news every week for the wrong reasons?
blah, blah, blah, blah.....

Reasons 1-4 are exactly why Tappa should not call up King.

King should be called up if he is performing better than our other forwards. It is incombent on Tappa to contact the man and discuss his expectations and pre-requistes for Marlon to be selected for JA duty. The past is gone...give the man an opportunity for the present and future.

Every man deserves a 2nd chance but how many we gone wid King now? Nah sah! I wish him the best with his club career because if he gets a call up it's a big slap in the face of people like Addlery, Dane Richards and Ryan Johnson who deserve their opportunities. We don't need to be so narrow on our selections looking for a spot for King and denying a chance for other players with abilities and level-headedness. I think we have too much depth at that position to be chasing after a controversial figure like King. How would it affect the overall chemistry of the team? Will the majority of the players want him back?

King eager for another chance

Friday 30th July 2010

Former Wigan striker Marlon King is determined to rebuild his football career after serving a jail term and has vowed to stay out of trouble.

Last October, King was jailed for 18 months having been found guilty of sexual assault and actual bodily harm over an incident in a London nightclub, which occurred in December 2008 while he was on loan to Hull from Wigan.

King's Wigan contract was terminated, however he believes he can have a future in the game and is hoping a club is willing to take him on.

He told Sky Sports News: "I haven't even thought about what league. Because there's no way I'm going to come out and think I'm going to walk into any team. I've got to earn my right. And given my opportunity I've got to take it.

"You need someone to give you that opportunity. I'd just like to say that given that opportunity I can at least do a job on the field and keep my nose clean off it."

King insists a responsibility to his family will ensure he will avoid off-field problems.

"I don't need to make the manager a promise because if I get in trouble then I let my family down, I let a lot of people down," he said.

"I've been away from them for nine months and they didn't deserve that. I owe it to them to do the right thing.

"I've discussed it with everybody and everybody's got to look after their best interest. If the club want to put something in my contract to say if anything happens ... that's fine. Because they won't find me in a situation like this or anything else again."
