Forumites, I was very touched by this article which was posted in the Jamaica Gleaner today that I felt obliged to share it with you. I can identify with this article since I am also from a humble upbringing (characterized by poverty and struggles). If you cannot recall your childhood, grandma's response "I feel very glad, but I am trying not to get too excited because my pressure will go up," to Jermaine's success will help you. I hope Jermaine excels in his endeavors, but most importantly I hope he does not bite the hands that fed him. Congratulations, Jermaine.
A dream come true
By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter
Marcia Potter, the mother of national midfielder Jermaine Johnson. - Ian Allen
THERE were tears of joy for 38-year-old Marcia Potter, when she learnt that her son, Jermaine Johnson, the national midfielder, had wrapped up a contract with English Premier Club, Boldon Wanderers.
"When I heard it on the news I shed tears of joy," said Miss Potter. According to her God had finally answered her prayers.
She walked away from her textile industry job three years ago to be a good mom for infant daughter. Since then, Miss Potter has been purchasing household items and "juggling" them on the street. Apart from that, 'the little money that her son gave her, would help out alot.'
Johnson's grandmother, Hyacinth Cann, was too overwhelmed to express her feelings.
"I feel very glad, but I am trying not to get too excited because my pressure will go up," said Miss Cann, the woman who raised the former Tivoli Gardens player from he was a toddler.
But while the news of his contract is already posted on the website of Boldon Wanderers, neither his mother nor grandmother have gotten any official word from anybody in authority about Johnson's new deal.
"I heard it on the radio and I spoke to him last night (Sunday)," Miss Cann told The Gleaner yesterday.
Coming from a poor, but humble family, Johnson who is affectionately called 'Teddy" seems to have injected new life in his family, one of hope and great expectation.
His grandmother does not regret spending a great deal of her life savings on the boy she referred to as her "baby".
"He is my first grand child and all that I have earned in life I spent it on him. I remember some days at work I choose not to eat any lunch, just to make sure he had lunch money for school the next day. My wish now is to see him get past the worst," said Miss Cann, who also controls all his local financial arrangements.
Reflecting on her son's life, Miss Potter, a graduate of the former Holy Trinity Secondary (now high) said she gave birth to him at age 17 and has been very supportive in his career as a footballer.
Born in the violence prone community of Southside in Central Kingston, Miss Potter said she was very happy when her mother moved out of the area and took "Teddy" with her.
"He always wanted to follow the footsteps of Trevor "Ernie" Spencer," his mother said.
Spencer was the captain of the Rae Town Minor League team of which Johnson was also a member. Spencer, also a former St. George's College Manning Cup player, migrated to the United States after securing a football scholarship.
Miss Potter now has high hopes of journeying to the United Kingdom to watch her son parade his skills alongside some of the most talented players in the world.
Percival 'Itesman' Cordwell, one of the coaches who guided Johnson in his early years, was happy for the young footballer.
"He is a very good player and I saw the potential when he was around 10 years old. I put him to play against the bigger boys in the under 16 Minor League competition when he was about 11," Cordwell said.

Why do I get the feeling that the timing of this article is wrong....
I say let the man get through his medical/work permit issues first before putting all of this out in the open...
That's just my opinion -I may be wrong
