Didn't want to say much about this younster because I didn't want to seem harsh. Saw him play in the qualifiers in Jamaica and thought he looked decent. However, his performance in the WC was poor to say the least.

He seem tired and out of it and I wondered if his decision to stay back in Jamaica for his exams got him out of the rythmn with his teammates.

On another note, the number 7, I think his name's Williams, impressed me. I thought this is the most aware I've seen a junior national team, especially at the back. They seem to lose the plot as soon as they get near the opponents final 1/3 though.

Anyway good tournament on a whole for me. They did not embarass themselves and outside of the Japan game, I thought they were competitive.

Well said...I did like the # 7 game too. Also, the # 5 Powell is a promising up and coming talent, just need a little more fine tuning and him gone a lead. He read the game very well and at all time he's hard-nosed, he could tone down just a little bit tho, just so to avoid getting unnecessary cards in the future, because his energy was definitely missing and we did need him in the final game against the French. Nonetheless, I love his fighting spirit, he will never go down without a fight...

Brush, I agree with the I 100%... However I'm hoping Holness is not another those talents that makes it locally but fails on the international stage because of his lack of endurance.

I noticed even in the Qualifiers in Mobay he always seems he's more exhausted than any of his teamates. it may maybe that he's not lazy just lacks the endurance. We all don't have the same level of endurance no matter how hard we train. You either have it or you don't. To become great in any sport you most have superior endurance in order for u to separate your self from the average player. Once u run out a Gas on the Field, u r basically useless no different than a Car that runs out of gas on Road.

It's hard just watching TV to say whether he's lazy or not. The coaching staff and his teamates are in best position to determine that. Btw, was Holness the only one of our players affected by Exams?

Then maybe he's not a ninety minute player.

Omar Holness plays a similar style to Khari Stephenson more finesse than steel

Latest update on Omar Holness is that he picked up a long term injury and will miss the entire 2011 ISSA Schoolboy season. He is an excellent student and does have his academics to push him through.

Hopefully, he is able to finish his studies early and training abroad by his 18th birthday in March 2012.

Holness to have knee surgery today

Nodley Wright, Gleaner Writer

National Under-17 football captain Omar Holness is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

The Wolmer's schoolboy, who led Jamaica in their Under-17 World Cup campaign earlier this year, is set to undergo knee surgery today to repair damage done to his right knee.

"I did a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan recently and it was discovered that I tore the medial meniscus and that I also have an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and an MCL (medial cruciate ligament) sprain in the right knee," the Wolmer's schoolboy told The Gleaner, ahead of his departure for Miami, Florida, on Saturday.

"The doctor said the worst case is that I will be back playing in eight months, but some people come back at about five or six months and I am optimistic. We were recommended to him by a friend of mine who dances and did a similar surgery and she is fine now," a relaxed-sounding Holness explained.

While the true nature of his injury worry was only recently confirmed, the 17-year-old Wolmer's sixth-former said it was not new.

"I sustained this injury about two years ago when I played against St George's College in the Manning Cup and aggravated it in early August while playing for Charlton against Fulham," said the player, who spent his summer playing in England.

Initially, the injury was very worrying for the football-mad youngster, but after speaking with a number of seasoned professionals, he has put it in perspective and is much more positive about getting back into the game.

"At first I was worried, but talking to sports people who have done surgery has eased my worries.

"Ricardo Fuller had major surgery on his back and also had surgery on his knee, and he is still in the game. I spoke with him and that really helped me. Ricardo Gardner also had knee surgery, and he is still playing so one can return to the game and what the doctor said also helps, so basically, injuries and surgeries are a part of the road and besides, I am still young so it should not affect me too much," he reasoned.

All the positive outlook, though, cannot wipe away the disappointment of not playing in the 2011-12 Manning Cup competition.

"As far as the Manning Cup is concerned, it is unfortunate that I will be missing it. It is terrible, awful watching my teammates playing and cannot be a part of it," Holness said.
