The competiton basically features the 12 parish champions and the DPL clubs, some DPL clubs won their parish, so the runners-up qualified for the FLOW all-island cup.

That is exactly my point- there are teams in the Flow All Island Competition that were not even on that list of over 300 - clubs in Jamaica. Could that be one of the reasons for the level of competition in Jamaica? Too many teams - talent on teams too spread out/Too "Watered down" for lack of a better term?

*Question - Could this be a classic case of too many teams vying for limited talent/limited talent pool?

Does look like some sort of consolidation is in order to me.

If you add up all the teams that started the All Island competition and put the talent of some of these teams together you can barely find a good team.......

LET'S USE THESE FINALISTS AS AN EXAMPLE:
(If you put the best talent of Humble Lion + August Town + Rivoli United + Naggo Head together as one team) VS either CD Motagua (Honduras) or Olimpia (Honduras) in a CONCACAF Champions League.........I would bet on the Honduran teams........now what does that say about all the teams below Naggo Head, Humble Lions etc????????

Flow Champion Cup kicks off today!

Thursday, February 18, 2010

THE battle for the right to be crowned winners of the 2009-10 Flow Champions Cup -- Jamaica's all island knock-out football competition -- begins today with 10 matches islandwide.

The feature match will see former four-time winners Portmore United (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007) opposing the 1997 champions Naggo Head Sports Club in the St Catherine Derby. A lot of history exists between both teams.

Public relations manager at Flow, Denise Williams (left) and special advisor to the minister of sports Allie McNab, conduct the first round draw at the launch of the Flow Champions Cup at the offices of the JFF recently.

1/1

Naggo Head, which is currently playing in the South Central Confederation Super League, secured their only hold on the All-Island trophy at the expense of Portmore (Hazard), a 1-0 result 13 years ago.

However Portmore, who are currently fighting against relegation in the National Premier League, has had the upper hand in recent years and only two weeks ago defeated Naggo Head on penalties to win the St Catherine Knockout.

Five other Premier League contenders will be on show in Round One of the competition, which also involves the fourteen parish champions.

Three-time premiership champion and beaten Champion's Cup finalist from 1996, Arnett Gardens, will host St Mary outfit Star Cosmos at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. Arnett Gardens have never had the distinction of lifting the KO Cup and should be gunning to come away with a win and advance to the second round.

Village United, the 2004 beaten finalist will entertain St Ann parish champions Benfica at the Elliston Wakeland Centre. KSAFA Jackie Bell finalist August Town will play away to Monymusk in Clarendon.

Rivoli United, with the Premier League's leading scorer Devon Hodges, oppose Ujama Community Club at Hector's River in Portland, while Humble Lions take on Manchester's George's Valley at the Effortville Community Centre.

Elsewhere, former back-to-back Champions Cup holders (1995 & 1996) Reno will battle Spicy Hill at the Frome Sports Complex, Leeds United square off against York United at STETHS, Granville tackles Bamboo at the Sam Sharp Mini-Ground, while KSAFA Jackie Bell finalist Cavaliers SC takes on Greenwich Town at the Constant Spring Field.

The winner of the Flow Champions Cup will walk away with $800,000, $150,000 more than last season's champions Boys' Town. The runners-up will pocket $400,000, while the two semi-final losers will collect $200,000 each. All 10 winners in round one will advance to meet the top 6 premier league teams in second round action on March 3 and 4, with those fixtures to be decided by a random draw on February 24.

Team Profile: Naggo Head Eyes Flow Cup

It is cliché to say: "only the fittest of the fittest will survive".

However, the team's motto is exactly the reality facing former National Premier League campaigners Naggo Head Sports Club.

Facing the prospect of losing most of their players, who are currently playing for free -- the 1997 Champions Cup winners not only need to secure their second lien on the Flow trophy to remain viable --but also win the South Central Confederation Super League and return to the premiership.

Thirteen years after their Champions Cup success -- a 1-0 victory over parish rivals Hazard United (now Portmore United); Team manager Roger Walcott believes his team is ripe for another fairy-tale run to the Cup.

"The year that we won it, I think we were playing D1 (Division One), a much lower league and from that day onwards they always called us the giant-killers because we played Hazard in that Champions Cup final and won it," he said, noting that his financially strapped team can pull off the near-impossible once again.

To make matters even sweeter, Naggo Head is opening up the 2010 competition against Portmore in the St Catherine Derby.

"To tell the truth I have a tough work assignment. As you know we have played Portmore United in the St Catherine KO final two Sunday's ago when they beat us on penalties, so I figure this time it's going to be even tougher," Walcott reasoned.

However, the manager is not giving up on his team, which last parading their skills in the National Premier League in the 2006/2007 season.

"One thing with my guys that I can tell you is that whenever we play a bigger team, we are always motivated," he said.

"To tell the truth we are going for it because we need it and we need to also attract some sponsorship and in order to do that we have to show that we need it, so we going all out to win the Flow Champions Cup," Walcott concluded.

Failure to win one or both of those trophies, could spell disaster for the Portmore-based club. "The guys have only committed to play out the rest of the season, so the aim is to be promoted back to the nation's top flight football competition," the manager reasoned.

The Naggo Head team, which was established 21 years ago, is currently second in the South Central Confederation Super League, which consists of teams from Manchester, St Elizabeth, Clarendon and St Catherine.

PREMIER League contenders Waterhouse and August Town FC were drawn for a mouth-watering clash when the second round of the Flow Champions Cup kicks off next Wednesday and Thursday.

The top-six Premier League teams that got a bye in the first round of competition, along with the 10 advancing teams from the first round, were drawn in eight matches at the second-round draw conducted at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) offices yesterday.

In the lone encounter between parish champions, St Thomas' York United will host Granville from St James.

With twenty-two goals scored in the first round, SportsMax and Flow made good on their promise to donate $3,000 per goal to Haiti, with a presentation of $66,000 going to the Jamaica Red Cross Haiti relief effort.

Two-time Flow Champions Cup winners, Waterhouse, beat August Town 1-0 in their second-round encounter at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium yesterday.

Waterhouse got off to a sprightly start and got on the scoresheet with only seven minutes gone in the match. They strung together a string of passes before Stephen Williams got off a lovely shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, which left August Town's custodian Devon Haughton with no chance.

Outscored

In the other games, defending champions Boys' Town clipped Sporting Central 1-0. St Georges were also 1-0 winners over Portmore United, while Arnett Gardens blanked Greenwhich Town 5-0 and Granville outscored York United 3-2.

The competition continued today with three matches. Humble Lions welcome Tivoli Gardens at Effortville Community Centre for a 3 p.m. fixture; Reno host Village United at Frome Sports Complex, also at 3 p.m.; and Rivoli United will entertain Harbour View at Spanish Town Prison Oval in a scheduled 6 p.m. kick-off.

Giants in KO battle
Published: Wednesday | March 17, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions

Ryon Jones, Gleaner Writer

The Flow Champions Cup will continue today and tomorrow with quarter-final matches that will feature three all-Premier League clashes, as only one Super League team, St James' Granville, advanced to this stage of the competition.

The most anticipated quarter-final matchup is to be played today between Premier League leaders Harbour View and fourth- place St Georges, at the Harbour View Mini Stadium, starting at 6 p.m.

The two teams have met on three occasions this season, with Harbour View coming away 2-0 and 3-1 winners, while the other ended in a 1-1 draw.

On a high

The Stars of the East will enter the game on a high after seizing sole leadership of the country's top league over the weekend, thanks to a 2-0 blanking of previous leaders Tivoli Gardens.

In the previous round of the Flow Champions Cup, Harbour View got by Rivoli United 2-1.

Harbour View's coach, Donovan Hayles, is hoping there will be no surprises, as his team enters the game confident, but cautious.

"We are entering the game confident, but with precaution. This is a knockout competition and knockout competitions hold surprises and we don't want to be surprised by St Georges," said Hayles.

"I am vying for the Premier League and this cup so while you might not see a lot of familiar faces, I don't think it will be a weakened team. We take every championship very serious and for me the Flow Champions Cup is the most prestigious knockout competition in the country," he added.

In St Georges' most recent league outing, they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Rivoli United. They had previously booked their place in the quarter-finals of the nationwide knockout competition with a 1-0 win over Portmore United.

St Georges' coach, Braxton Hyre, is hoping his team can find the back of the net while keeping Harbour View off the scoresheet.

"We know that they (Harbour View) are a competent team but based on my assessment over the three games, I thought that we were just not scoring," said Hyre. "I thought that we gave them a good run but the thing is we weren't finishing, so I am hoping that we can finish and keep them off the scoresheet, because they scored in all three games against us."

Hyre added: "We will use the best of the players that are available because since the third round (of the Premier League) we have scaled down to around 22 players. We are taking this one very seriously, because this might be the last title for us to grab, so we are going all out for tomorrow's game."

The day's other game will be contested between Humble Lion and Waterhouse at the Effortville Community Centre, starting at 3 p.m.

Defending their title

Defending Flow Cup champions, Boys' Town, will resume their title defence tomorrow, when they travel to Elliston Wakeland Centre to do battle with Village United, also at 3 p.m.

The remaining match, also on tomorrow, will feature Granville, who will host Arnett Gardens at the Sam Sharpe Mini Ground at 3 p.m.

The eight remaining clubs are guaranteed at least $90,000 each, while the semi-final losers will receive $200, 000. The eventual winners will pocket $800, 000, with the runners-up receiving half of that amount.

Boys' Town, Arnett secure semis berths

BY HORACE HINES Observer staff reporter

Friday, March 19, 2010

FALMOUTH, Trelawny -- Boys' Town and Arnett Gardens yesterday secured semi-final berths in the Flow Champions Cup KO contest with victories over Village United and Granville FC respectively, who were sent crashing from the competition.

In a game played at the Elliston Wakeland playing field in Falmouth, Asrick Samuels' 70th-minute unanswered strike carried defending champions Boys' Town to victory over a plucky Village.

Winning coach Andrew Price, who bemoaned the rough surface at Falmouth, expressed his team's resolve to defend their title.

"We're not used to these conditions; not the best surface to play on. We had the wind against us in the first half, but we battled through the first 45 minutes. As defending champions we have to come out and fight, despite the conditions," Price argued.

On the other hand, a dejected Cassman Williams blamed the outcome on his charges' failure to convert their chances.

"Very disappointed. We didn't play to our true potential... we created scoring opportunities and didn't make use of them and that is what came back to haunt us at the end of the day," Williams rued.

Village enjoyed more possession and appeared set to take the lead but failed to capitalise on any of the several scoring opportunities that presented themselves.

Cordell Simpson came close to scoring for the Trelawny team in the 60th minute, but his shot from distance shaved the crossbar on its way out.

Three minutes later, Philmore Crumbie brilliantly tipped what appeared to be a sure goal to deny Michael Campbell.

But in the 70th minute, Asrick Samuels soared above the Village defenders to powerfully head home a George Vernal corner kick past a hapless Elvis Hart in goal for the Villagers.

The goal seemed to knock the wind out of the sails of the Village players, who appeared lethargic in their bid to draw level with the Red Brigade.

Meanwhile, at Sam Sharpe Teachers' College, Arnett Gardens edged Granville 2-1.

Gardens benefitted from an own goal in 27th minute and a Dwayne Plummer strike in the 53rd.

Meanwhile, Odane Snow scored the consolation goal for Granville in the 43rd.

Semi-final showdown Sunday in Flow Champions Cup

Friday, March 26, 2010

THREE non-winners -- Humble Lion, St Georges Sports Club and Arnett Gardens -- are still in with a chance of securing their first hold on the Flow Champions Cup.

The fourth team remaining in the all-island knockout competition, which will contest the semi-final round this Sunday, March 28 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, is defending champions Boys' Town.

The Andrew Price-coached 'Red Brigade', which edged Village United 1-0 in quarter-final action, will square off against fellow premiership campaigners Arnett Gardens in the feature match of the double-header at 5:30 pm.

Price believes his charges are ready to beat their community rivals for the second time this season and move on to retain the coveted cup.

"I think it is even more important, as defending champions, that we defend our title and I believe that this is the time of the year that we really find our footing in the football season and we really make some strides," Price said.

Arnett Gardens booked their spot in the last four with a 2-1 victory over Granville. Arnett are hungry for success over their Trench Town neighbours, to remain on target for a trophy in 2010. Arnett enter the match high on confidence, having shared the spoils with Boys' Town in three previous meetings this season.

"It will boil down to who needs it most. Boys' Town have been playing gutsy football, but we have been picking up on our goalscoring opportunities, so I think that come Sunday if we continue in our scoring vein, we'll come out victors," said Wayne Fairclough, who led Waterhouse to the Champions Cup trophy in 2008.

"We are going full out in order for us to really try and secure this coveted title that Arnett has never won. I will lend my experience of winning this competition to Arnett in order for us to try and nab this one," Fairclough added.

Meanwhile, having sent previous Champions Cup winners Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse packing, the Clarendon-based Humble Lion will be hoping for more success over St Georges at 3:00 pm.

Having beaten St Georges once and drawn another premiership encounter this season, Humble Lion's coach Chris Bender believes his players have what it takes to stop the Portland team in order to advance to the Flow Cup final.

"Overall, the St Georges team is very good and they have shown that by beating Harbour View in the quarters... that is no mean feat. We are going in there very cautious, with the hope that we can get a positive result and come out victorious," Bender said.

St Georges, like Humble Lion, who are seeking their first lien on the all-island knockout cup, had eliminated four-time winners and favourites Harbour View in the round of eight.

The Portlanders, who ended the match with nine players, had rallied from behind to beat the 'Stars of the East' 2-1 in extra time.

St Georges' assistant coach Raymond Gordon is boiling with confidence heading into the semi-final clash.

"Having beaten Harbour View... we want to carry this to the next level because we hope to have this trophy," he said.

The winner of the SportsMax-managed Flow Champions Cup will walk away with $800,000, $200,000 more than last season's champions Boys' Town. The runners-up will pocket $400,000, while the two semi-final losers will collect $200,000 each. Winners will advance to the final on April 18.

Semi-final Schedule:

Sunday, March 28, 2010

3:00 pm -- St Georges vs Humble Lion at Anthony Spaulding Complex

5:30 pm -- Arnett Gardens vs Boys' Town at Anthony Spaulding Complex
