The reason for our current tribulations has nothing to do with the TD. The JFF neither!!!
The name of our national team is wrong. It sounds like a Tourist Board promo. Along with rum, sand, and limbo, football is thrown into an all inclusive package!!

The name is stereotypical. It ignores the fallen warriors and their tradition of sacrificing their all. It ignores their yearning to establish a football programme.

What's in a name especially when a team has done so well to make a 'name' for itself?

Isn't reggae our gift to the world making it inseperably Ja'can?

Granted the prefix Reggae- does that, but my God (god)!!!, Doesn't Boyz (BOYS) really belittle the grown men who play their hearts out for their flag.

I am in no way suggesting a name change to ReggaeMen!!

Where is the dignity? Where is it in the following?:

The Mariachi BoyZ

The High-Life BoyZ

The Rumba BoyZ

The Soca Warriors????

Sound the Abeng.

A name change before Sept. 2 or we'd better hope that the Mariachi BoyZ cone to town playing with sombreroes and sandals.

I'm sure you're the only one bawling for a name change Rasputin,

so give us your suggestions..

I'm still trying to figure out the name being the reason for the current tribulations also...

Rasputin: You are kidding right?

Do you really think that the name of the team is responsible for their poor performances?

Why would you want to trivialize a serious discussion with this comical explanation?

Do you know how proud each and every member of the team feels to know that the team is assiociated with reggae?

Do you know that our 12th man - whenever we play at the 'office'- is the reggae music?

Have you ever visited the National Stadium prior to game time and see and feel the vibes and emotions that the reggae music brings.

Do you know that the players were involved in the decision to name the team that way.

Do you know that the payers themselves sing and DJ in the campt to break down the tension and build vibes?

I remembered Portia Simpson saying (1997, I think) that she would only approve the name if it was spelt 'Boyz' and not 'Boys'.

Do you know that we got alot more recogition and respect around the world from that name than from what we achieve on the field?

Just a tongue in cheek attempt to lighten the situation, not to 'trivialise'.
My anewer is yes to all of your questions Double B, except that I wasn't aware how much the players were actually involved in naming the team.
Can't agree with your last point though. While our performance has been lackluster lately there is no doubt that it is our play that has brought us respect. Not just our name.

If indeed my post was a serious one that would be a strong argument against it.

Honestly though, while the name has grown on me, I initally had a problem with it. It DID sound stereotypical to me at first, but admittedly it is not only catchy but may also be apt. I had a problem with BoyZ (boys)- an old schooler as I am.

Funny you should challenge me to come up with a name Zouse. I can't do better than the current one. I have been trying to find a name from our tradition of the Maroons, Nanny, Paul Bogle etc., something with a longer historical connection, but at best I have only produced commical sounding names.

Clearly if a name was responsible for failure, it would have been so from the very start.

It seems that the situation is even too serious for a little sarcastic humour.

By the way, where did this thing about naming the national team came from?

I notice that most national teams don't have a name. In fact it is only Jamaica and Trinidad in the Concacaf have names. Trinidad only just started naming their team after we went to France.

The only other national teams with names that I am aware of are from Africa.

Nigeria - Eagles
Cameroon - Indomitable Lions
etc.

Anybody know the names for the English ,French ,Dutch, German,or Brazilian national teams.

Where did the name thing came from?
Did it start in Africa? or was it in Jamaica?

Incidentally, Trinidad might want to shop for a new name because the Zimbawe's women soccer national tea is called 'Mighty Warriors'.

I'm not sure but I think we got the name after Jamaica went away to play Zambia in two friendly matches after they played us at the office, the media over there dubbed us the Reggae Boyz and it stuck ever since.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Think that you may have it right Technic, it might be a media thing that caught on.

Double B when did the team come in on the discussion about the name? Any idea?

Reggaeboyz is perfect. I used to think it was stupid when I first heard it. I guess thinking was what does one have to do with the other.

But now it is the name given to the team. A name does not have to be so soulsearchingly deep.

The Reggaeboyz party come to town...music a play and ball a roll. Entertainment for everybody. Wicked name.

The naming of JA the reggae boyz might have been one og the best moves by the players, political peeps and JFF. If only they could market this goal mine the rite way.
As DOUBLE said I would agree that the naming thing started in AFRICA.

1980's Nigerians(Super Eagles)
1990 Camaronians(indomitable lions)
1994 USA(Sams Army, which is thier main supporter group)
Trinidad( still can't make up their minds, Soca Warriors)
South African(Bafanna Bafanna)
Australias(socceroons)
New Zealand(KIWIS which I think apply's to all their teams)
Mexico (tri-colors or however, they write it in spanish)

but none of these teams have attempted popularize their nickname as much as JA.
Like all nike names their are always some form of stereotyping. MLB 'CINCINATTI REDS and WASHINGSTON REDSKINS come to mind.

I'm surprize however, that the EUROPEAN countrires haven't jumped on board the nickname thing yet, considering that most clubs already have nicknames.

REGGAE BOYZ FAN 4LIFE

REGGAE BOYZ 21 and up
REGGAE BABEZ<20

REGGAE GIRLZ "female JFF team"

SUNSHINE GIRLZ "Netballers"

ANY NAMES FOR THE OTHER JA teams??????????????

hahahahahaha

REGGAEBOYZ for life!

Not a big fan about the ReggaeBabez thing at all, even though it more catchy and it fit the best. There is nothing babyish about my side. Even though I can see how it would be good marketing thing.

rasputin:
I am not sure exactly when the players got involved but I heard that Portia Simpson in collaboration with the JFF and the players was responsible for the ratification of the name.
Maybe the complete information is in the book written by Robbie Earl...

its one thing to have a catchy name like the Reggae boyz, but if we did'nt play good football a make it to world cup the name might have died.Dont forget Ghana's team is known as the Black Stars. One other thing a some of the other islands have this attitude of "if jamaica can do it, we can do it too" or it cant be that hard if jamaica can do it.Ask the Trinis how hard it is to Qualify for the world cup.Its much harder to make the WC now than '74 or even '92 the playing field is more level now.

Kind of a delayed response.....Just a correction to Double B's, take that only Jamaica and Trinidad have a name in Concacaf. Actually, these Concacaf teams had names long before the Reggaeboyz.

Guatemala - Los Chapines/z
Honduras - Catrachos
Mexico - Tricolor
Costa Rica - Los Ticos
El Salvador - Guanacos

Usually because their games are broadcast in Spanish - most English speaking listeners would not recognized it.

Easy Double B!
