According to Encyclopaedia Britannica's free online service, On This Day (17th January 1893) the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by interests supported by American Marines. Quite soon after an agreement was enforced where the voting rights of both native and naturalized Hawaiians of other ethnic groups was taken away whilst Americans and other Europeans were granted full voting rights.
You would think that I(eye)raq and Afghanistan is something new, but these people have been exercising their imperialistic reflexes since they won their independence from the so-called “Great Britain”.
An interesting postscript to this story is that Bill Clinton 100 years later in November 1993 signed a bill apologising for America’s role in kicking Queen Liliuokalani off of her throne. No wonder in literature and films some Hawaiians are portrayed as being openly anti USA.
Some historical examples of the USA’s imperialistic tendencies are as follows:
1893 - Attempts to take over Cuba (even to today see Guantánamo Bay as an example), Puerto Rico, and the Philippines were made under the guise of the Spanish American War of the late 1890s.
1912- 33 – Nicaragua
1916 – 24 - Dominican Republic
1917 - The Virgin Islands, apparently purchased from Denmark for $25 million also on the 17th in 1917.
1915 – 34 – Haiti – Note how long they will take to leave after going in to help after the devastation caused by this recent earthquake.
1983 – Grenada – An invasion where even Jamaican personnel were involved. This is during a period when Edward Seaga was Prime Minister of Jamaica. "A flagrant violation of international law" according the UN.
1989 – Panama – The US invaded in December of 1989 but it is obvious that they believed that Panama belonged to them since the completion of the Canal in 1914.
None of the above includes the many overt and covert CIA operations conducted in almost every South and Central American country in support of various dictatorships or rightist-insurgencies.

Don't forget the CIA-ga coup in Jamaica of 1980.

Thanks Tman. Guyana under Forbes Burnham also experienced some of the CIA activities
