Whitmore denies knowingly taking injured goalies to South Africa

Sean Williams

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa - Reggae Boyz head coach Theodore Whitmore fended off suggestions that his team knowingly took two injured goalkeeper here for today's friendly match against hosts South Africa.

Nursing old injuries which have been aggravated since arriving here, goalkeepers Shawn Sawyers and Dwayne Miller were both passed fit to play in the match, though they were in pain from knee/ankle and shoulder injuries, respectively.

"We always pick a squad with fit players, and if there is doubt (about a player's fitness), it makes no sense to take them," he said yesterday.

Whitmore said a clean bill of health of both players was given to him by the Jamaica Football Federation medical team before the squad departed for South Africa for the game.

"Definitely, both of them were fit and ready. Remember we had a couple of training sessions before we left Jamaica and everything was okay, even at that point in time we played a game in Clarendon and both of them were a part of that game as well," Whitmore told the Observer.

"What we had in that game (against Clarendon All-Stars) was Luton Shelton who came off injured. If there was a decision to be made (about) the goalkeepers, we would have made it then," he said.

In Miller's case, he sustained his shoulder injury in a Digicel Premier League match for his club Harbour View, but returned to action after it was said he was ordered to take rest.

"Basically a month before we came to South Africa, Dwayne Miller sustained a shoulder injury and he has been receiving treatment and the physiotherapist at his club (Harbour View) gave him 10 days off, and he retuned and kept two games for the club.

"He came here (South Africa) and got a knock on it and the injury reocurred. and our medical team has been working on it," said Whitmore.

Sawyer's knee injury is an old one, but he imported an ankle condition in training on Sunday.

"What made that situation worse is that he picked up an ankle injury yesterday (Sunday). But at this point both goalkeepers are fine and will be ready for the game," said the Montego Bay native.

The almost 15-hour transatlantic flight to get to South Africa, Whitmore claims, undoubtedly played a role in the injury scares.

"The long flight to get here has played a part in this injury business. Look at Sawyers, his problem started because he was sitting so long (on the plane) and there was not much movement," he pointed out.

Meanwhile, team masseuse, Brazilian Pablo Camargo supported Dr Mark Sanderson's diagnosis that both goalies have passed the worst and are ready for action.

"I have been working with both players and they will be okay for the game. Miller, once he's warmed up, he does not feel the pain," said Camargo

Battle of the Boyz

Jamaica oppose South Africa in first of two-leg friendly series

Sean Williams with the Reggae Boyz in Bloemfontein, South Africa

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa - Head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore's mission is a simple one.

When the Reggae Boyz face hosts South Africa in a friendly match at the Free State Stadium at Vodacom Park here today at 8:30 pm (1:30 pm Jamaica time), the battle cry is to win "and restore some pride" to Jamaica's football.

"We never qualified for the World Cup and we did badly in the Gold Cup, so we're on our bad patch too, so we want to take this game as an opportunity to restore some pride and keep Jamaica's football alive," said Whitmore following the team's final training session yesterday in unusual chills of 45 degrees Fahrenheit brought on by a cold front descending from a snow-pelted mountain range located some 300 kilometres east of Bloemfontein.

But the Boyz's hosts, affectionately called 'Bafana Bafana', themselves have a lot to prove today as the have gone nine games without a win, racking up a humiliating eight losses and a draw which came against Japan on Saturday.

Whitmore said he's not concerned a bit about the World Cup hosts' bad spell as they prepare for next year's tournament.

We can't concentrate on their crisis. We're going through our crisis as well. We're ranked 65th in the world and they're ranked 85th, we want to keep that going, so if in tomorrow's game we can add a little more on them it'd be good for us," said the former Reggae Boy.

A win for either team today would lift spirit, but 'Bafana Bafana' appear more desperate in the situation as they seek to give local fans hope that their team will not be put to shame on home soil.

Whitmore, Jamaica's World Cup here back in France 1998, noted victory is the aim and suggested it will come with a "good performance from my players and a good performance will guarantee a good result".

Both Jamaican goalkeepers - Portmore United's Shawn Sawyers and Harbour View's Dwayne Miller - looked in fine form at yesterday's training session at the match venue after doubts swirled around their fitness for the game.

But miraculously, the goalkeeping duo appeared fit as fiddle, a contrasting image of the limping and pained look on their faces the day before.

Sawyers is carrying knee and ankle injuries, while Miller carries around a damaged right shoulder.

Whitmore, who expressed concerns on Sunday about the players' conditions, was delighted that the efforts of team doctor Mark Sanderson and masseuse Pablo Camargo have paid off.
"The doctor and masseuse worked on them and there's no complaint, so that's good for us," he beamed.

Both Dr Sanderson and Camargo confirmed both players are fit and ready for action as they are now pain-free.

And testimony to that, Miller has been given the nod to start the match. He will be joined by Shavar Thomas, Dicoy Williams, Jermaine Taylor in the centre of defence, while Demar Phillips on the left and Jamal Campbell-Ryce on the right will operate down the flanks. The four midfielder are Rodolph Austin, Jason Morrison, Jermaine Johnson and Dane Richards with Devon Hodges operating as a solitary point man.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Brazilian coach, Carlos Alberta Parreira, said he aims to break the team's jinx of poor results at the expense of the visiting Reggae Boyz.

"Any game for me as a national team is important. Always for me, the next game is the most important. After Japan, the most important game is Jamaica. It doesn't matter if it was Germany, if it was Brazil, whatever, it is important because we're running for results.

"We've to create a winning (run) as the team has lost so many games in succession so that's why this game for us is as important as the one against Japan," said Parreira, who is on his second stint as the South Africa coach.

Parreira, who promised fans that the team will advance to the second round of next summer's World Cup, says it's time they "revive the style that we left when I was here one and a half years back".

"Ball possession for me is our strength, to have the ball. We have to encourage the players to start doing this again. we need more games, more training to improve this ball possession. And with speed of course, we need ball possession with speed," noted the Brazilian as he spoke to Jamaican journalists yesterday.

But the experienced coach, who won the World Cup with Brazil, warned that Jamaica will bring a different brand of football to which Japan displayed on Saturday in the 0-0 tie in Port Elizabeth.

"The Jamaican team and Japanese team are completely different in style so. it's going to be different for us, we may have more freedom to play, but also the Jamaicans are more comfortable with the ball. They are big guys, the Japanese are small and quick so we've to adjust to these conditions," he said.

South Africa will look for a turnout of Saturday's performance where the team demonstrated a woeful lack of attacking imagination through striker Katlego Mphela who has scored 11 goals for his local club so far this season.

Also, they will pin homes for a revival of their flagging play on striker Bernard Parker, crowd favourite midfielder Teko Modise, captain Adrian Mokoena and goalkeeper Moeneb Josephs.

The South Africa-Jamaica match-up will be the fourth meeting. They first met in Kingston in 1999 where that game finished 1-1, then a return encounter in Cape Town drew 0-0 in 2003, after which they played to an exciting 3-3 tie in Los Angeles where South Africa appeared as a guest team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005.

In the return leg of today's game, South Africa will travel to Kingston for that showdown in March next year, an encounter that could be 'Bafana Bafana's' final warm-up before the World Cup Finals.

This will be interesting. South Africa has had a tough string of games, but their losses have been to tough opponents, with the exception of Iceland. They have lost by narrow margins to Spain, Brazil, Serbia, Germany, the Republic of Ireland and Norway. Jamaica has not been playing this level of competition.

For us I cant remember a time when a 3 4 3 formation ever worked for us.

Whenever we have three forwards we are lucky if we can score even 1 goal, they seem confused and out of sync.

But I guess its worth a try, cause even though most won't admit it we have a pretty good defense, it's the forwards that have been failing us in the last few years.

Well you right on that one, but thats 1 out of many games. And it was a game that Canada wasn't too serious about either. Didn't they use that game as exposure for their inexperienced players,(I'm not saying they just rolled over and played dead)

Like I said, I think we can use the 3-4-3 especially since is our strike force is fairly new and could surprise us, this defintely doesn't work with Fuller, Shelton + 1, (the 1 canada game doesn't change that fact).

I agree with you , . the 343 is a attacking Formation and work well for teams who need to get a huge result , I agree what ur saying that it wont work with our customary frontline , and I do not know why tappa is using such ah attacking formation on the road but is results that count , I see South Africa as a inferior
team to jamaica , on the road we can beat them by a goal .

24 minutes Jamaica almost scored through an Aaron Mokoena own goal. It seems Jamaica is playing 3-5-2

27 minutes Aaron Mokoena clears the ball off the line from a Dane Richards shot (commentator thinks it may have crossed the line)
