Burrell issues warning to ISSA

JFF Captain Horace Burrell. - File
Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president, Captain Horace Burrell, has issued a stern warning to the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) to enact measures to deal with the recent spate of disturbances involving spectators at schoolboy football matches.
Burrell departed from the main text of a speech delivered at the awards ceremony of the Jamalco Football League on Thursday night in Clarendon, to express his alarm at incidents which have seen disruptions in play, including daCosta Cup matches between St James and Cornwall at Jarrett Park, and the Holmwood Technical-Edwin Allen encounter in Christiana.
missile war
Burrell specifically quoted a radio sports report he heard on Thursday, which cited a missile war between supporters of two schools following a match.
The island's football boss had spent some time explaining the role and strides football had played in cooling tensions between top Premier League clubs Arnett Gardens and Tivoli Gardens.
However, he became noticeably animated, openly stating he would call ISSA chief, Dr Walton Small, to meet with his members and the school representatives and address the matter.
"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated," said the former army man who is a member of FIFA's disciplinary committee. "Schoolboy and schoolgirls," he continued, " should be enjoying the game of football, but I am seeing a difference where teams and some unruly spectators are taking it to a level that the JFF will not sit back and tolerate."
savoury rhetoric
Earlier, Burrell had more savoury rhetoric for the organisers of the Jamalco League.
He said he endorsed their mission of putting together a team that would play in the Premier League, but added that they should broaden the concept by including young talents from around the world - specifically, Brazil, Argentina and Australia.
Among the awards given were the $150,000 first prize to winners Sunset, leading goal-scorer award to Andrew Isaacs of Top Hill, and MVP of the finals, Michael Dixon, captain of Sunset. The Most Disciplined Award, named after Jamalco's managing director, Jerome Maxwell, was presented to Wembley.

So JFF has jurisdiction over the school system as well? How does that work?

Renewed call for spectators to clean up act

Renewed call for spectators to clean up act
MONTEGO BAY, St James - President of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), Dr Walton Small, has renewed his call for spectators to clean up their act at sporting events involving high school teams.
"I'm very disappointed in the behaviour of the spectators and I'm calling on them to abide by the rules of the competitions and have faith in the grievance process," Dr Small told the Observer yesterday.
The Wolmer's Boys' School head warns that continued disruption of matches by spectators could result in "dire consequences". Dr Small said he made the appeal at the start of the schoolboy football season in September, but "it appears the message is not getting through to the supporters".
The call has come in the wake of several incidents in the daCosta Cup competition where games have been interrupted due to missiles, including bottles and stones, being thrown at players and officials.
One coach, Kemar Wilby of York Castle, has been banned for two years from all ISSA-run competitions after he allegedly attacked and verbally abused officials after a Zone D game against Aabuthnott Gallimore last month.
Additionally, St James High's venue, Jarrett Park, has been put under a one-year probation following missile-throwing incidents during a Zone A match against Cornwall College on October 1.
Dr Small also pointed out that in some incidents, the attacks on the players were by their own supporters, as was the case in the Holmwood versus Edwin Allen Zone G affair when the Holmwood goalkeeper was attacked by his own supporters after conceding a goal.
"The spectators must understand that the games are foremost conducted in friendly conditions and must be allowed to be held in that spirit," Dr Small pointed out, threatening that actions can and will be taken.
Among the actions that can be taken, he said, are that teams may be suspended from competition for more than a year; venues can be banned, teams can be forced to find other venues, or games be played without spectators.
The Disciplinary Committee of ISSA is to meet this morning at St Elizabeth Technical High in Santa Cruz to deal with three incidents involving teams in Zones B and C.
They will deal with two matters of indiscipline in Zone C, the slashing of the Mannings School bus tyres after their game against Godfrey Stewart on Saturday, as well as a stone-throwing incident following the match between Little London and Petersfield High. The issue of the unplayed Zone B match between Anchovy High and Irwin will also be dealt with at the meeting.

They need to start have match behind closed doors with no spectators for the offending schools and then start docking points.
