Jamaica's women footballers will showcase their skill when they match up against the Haitian National Women's team at the Lockhart stadium on August 25, 2001. The game will be part of the attractions in celebration of Caribbean Night with the Miami Fusion Team In the first game of the double header, the Miami Fusions will face the Metro Stars in their MLS encounter. The Jamaican girls will have Alicia james, who plays left midfield and reads the game very well. She posse a lethal left foot and scored from 25 metres out when they faced the Raleigh Wings. Nicole Bell (Florida International University) is an attacking midfielder and center forward, with an abundance of skill, very good goal scorer and an exciting player to watch. Nickesia Thomas, is a talented goalkeeper and was voted most outstanding player against the Raleigh Wings in 1999. The festival starts at 6.00 PM and will have a live remote with WAVS 1170 radio, authentic Caribbean food and music, Fusion F.C. T-Shirts and ticket giveaways. For more information call: 954-295-6291

Question, Why is this team not reffered to as the Reggae Girls? Another case of a woman's place being in the kitchen by day and the bedroom by night? Wah a gwan? The word "Reggae" when associated with football, is so patented that only a bunch of men are allowed to use it? Can someone enlighten me!

Why would you think that this is an indication of "Another case of a woman's place being in the kitchen by day and the bedroom by night". Not because a brother's name is Bob the sister should be called Bobette. Each has their own identity. I have heard the womens netball team called reggae girls , I have very recently heard the womens 4x4 team refered to as the reggae girls. Fact is the mens team was tagged the Reggae Boyz and it stuck. At one point some were calling the men's team " The Reggae Lions". What if that had stuck, would we call the girls team The Reggae Lioness? If the public tags them The Reggae Girls, that works fine with me. But not for a moment would I look at it as putting down the women.

I saw them trained. In my opinion, they are good. But not the greatest. Look out for the one left footer girl though. She's wicked.

Haiti test for Jamaica's Reggae Girls
By Charmaine Austin , Staff Reporter
JAMAICA'S female footballers will put into practice what they learnt over the past week when they meet Haiti in friendly international game at the Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale tonight (8:45 p.m. Jamaica time).
Seventeen members of the team left the island yesterday for Florida and will be joined there by overseas-based Nicole Bell and Lisanne Peart.
Wolmer's High School playfield was the venue for the last training session where coach Christopher Bender took a 23-strong squad through a series of exercises.
The current team, though talented, is under-strength as some of the better players are overseas on football scholarships including top defender Geniva Sinclair.
Said Bender: "We've lost some of the better girls, but this will give the new ones exposure and a bit of experience.
"The girls are fit and in good condition. Some of them are on teams currently in the semi-finals of the women's league. We've prepared as best as we can so far and are looking forward to playing this game," he added.
The Jamaican women played Haiti in the Copa qualifying tournament last year and suffered a controversial 1-0 defeat.
"We are expecting to do well against Haiti this time around. Haiti are a physical team, always running. We played them last year and they beat us 1-0, but under adverse conditions. This time, we are leaving no room for surprises," Bender said.
Midfielder Alicia James (captain), goalkeeper Nickeisha Thomas, left fullback Hishamar Falconer and defender Bernadette Mairs were part of the team that played the Haitians last year.
They are joined by new talents Diane Hue, a defender, and midfielders Denise Duncan and Kaena-Shae Thomas.
After this friendly tournament in Florida, the team will shift its focus to the inaugural FIFA Under-19 women's championship next month.
The coach says he's looking for the strongest players to make up that team. At present, only 15 are eligible, and overseas-based players are being considered to add to the numbers.
The team of 17 selected yesterday reads Alicia James (captain), Nickeisha Thomas, Tameka Drummond, Hishamar Falconer, Kaena-Shae Thomas, Tamara Honeywell, Jody-Ann McGregor, Suzette Murray, Kim Dunn, Denise Duncan, Bernadette Mairs, Sonya Lewis, Yanique Simon, Elise McKenzie, Marsha Boyd, Kessian Foster and Diana Hue

I do hope that we support the women's team with the same emotion as we do the men. Jamaican women have proven themselves to be world class athletes and with the support of the people I am sure we can produce a top class women's football team
