Jyouth, did they also say that most of this squad will play Ecuador? There will be few overseas players for that one, I am sure. And is Taylor playing anywhere?

Youth movement to find new talent. We need to start recruiting overseas also since we have nothing going on, we might as well play some young guys now and get the squad in place for Brazil qualifying.

Andre Darby was called but not the other u-20 defender - Simpson? Hopefully plans are afoot for u-23.

Ricardo Cousins was called. Any u-20 midfielders?

Lack of younger national prospects 10 years after France is damning!

so is not taking this cycle's u23 team seriously... the fact that it is played in london plus a strong showing could open far more doors for our locals and make playing for jamaica a serious option to consider instead of a last ditch chance at the world cup for some of our england born players

and sadly no under 20 midfielders... but if you follow usf in the ncaa they have 3 very talented u20 midfielders and the captain for rutgers as well

Metro,

Give the youths sometime at their university pre-season. The Captain has finally realized that some of our players are technically lacking to compete in the international market so the JFF is slowly working to address the issue.

Our short term goal is to win matches and prepare for the next Digicel Caribbean Cup.

Our five year goal is to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

------------------------

I like the squad that is been called it gives the coach and players some time to develop.

well 2014 qualification begins in 2012 so we have three years i hope we get a better draw this time and no foolishness like what took place in 2008 when burrel bring in simoes with only nine months before our first game and then ignoring all our best players for a bunch of rookies.we also have to start being a better away team and stop getting massacred everytime we go to aztecca to play mexico really every goal matters and when it comes down to goal difference it's all about the goals u score and the goals that u concede.do u guys remember what happened in 06 when panama finished ahead of us by 1 point and made the hex and then finished dead last.that went to show, thought us a lesson about underestimating the oppent, finally preparation is key.

I think that what we need to do is call in a january winter camp in 2010 for u23 players only and put them up against st. kitts, the bahamas or some team like that ahead of olympic qualifying in 2011

Impressive Boyz train eyes on St Kitts

By Howard Walker, Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

Friday, August 14, 2009

Some senior Reggae Boyz could be axed following an encouraging display from a young and depleted team in an exciting 0-0 draw against Ecuador in their international friendly on Wednesday at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

The relatively young Jamaican squad was weakened through the lack of availability of at least eight senior English-based players and veterans Tyrone Marshall and Donovan Ricketts, who ply their trade in Major League Soccer in the USA.

The team, captained for the first time by 28-year-old Shavar Thomas of Chivas USA, matched their more seasoned opponents Ecuador, ranked 33 positions above them at 36 in the world and coming off an impressive 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Argentina in June.

Captain Horace Burrell, who since returning as the head of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) in 2007 has had to suffer the indignity of watching his flagship unit fail to advance to the 2010 World Cup and more recently a dismal performance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, was pleased with what he saw on Wednesday.

Burrell indicated that serious action could be taken when the Gold Cup report is tabled at the next Executive Meeting on August 23.

Information reaching the Observer is that several senior players held the JFF at ransom over match fees, which eventually "killed the vibes" during the Gold Cup, thus the poor showing.

Jamaica lost their first two games 0-1 to Canada and Costa Rica, respectively, before edging El Salvador 1-0 to bow out at the group stage.

"Encouraging signs compared to what happened at the Gold Cup. Several lessons have been learnt. When the Gold Cup report is tabled at the executive meeting on August 23rd, then I will have more to say. But certainly the signs are encouraging and it's something to work with," Burrell told the Observer immediately after Wednesday's game.

Jamaica gave Harbour View's 22-year-old Dicoy Williams - who partnered Thomas and Jermaine Taylor in defence in a 3-4-3 formation employed by coach Theodore Whitmore - his first international cap.

Taylor was making a return to the team since late last year, while Thomas has been in and out of the squad since making his debut in 1999.

Jason Morrison, Khari Stephenson, Eric Vernon and Demar Phillips were the midfielders, while Devon Hodges was flanked by speedsters Dane Richards and Luton Shelton up front.

Ecuador, missing the talented Antonio Valencia, who signed for Manchester United, nonetheless fielded a very strong squad and head coach Sixto Vizuete vowed to take the match seriously, as it was their last practice game before two crucial World Cup South American qualifiers.

Ecuador are currently fifth on 20 points, seven behind leaders Brazil, and with the top four guaranteed a spot at the 2010 World Cup, their next two games against Colombia and Bolivia in September are deemed crucial.

But the largely inexperienced Jamaicans held their own and matched Ecuador in every aspect of the game. It was a free-flowing game and Jamaica could have been two goals up in the first 10 minutes when both Hodges and Richards got clear-cut chances in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper.

In the eighth minute, Hodges was sent through clear on goal, but he hesitated and allowed goalkeeper Jose Cevellos to narrow the angle and eventually gather a tame effort.

Two minutes later Richards was also through on goal, but Hodges' through ball was too heavily weighted and he ran out of real estate and couldn't beat the goalkeeper from an acute angle.

Ecuador got their first real chance in the 16th minute when right-back David Quiroz's shot was easily saved by young goalkeeper Dwayne Miller.

"By all account I am pleased with the standard of play exhibited by the Boyz. It's a marked improvement in terms of effort and I am not saying that we have arrived, but what I was pleased about was the effort, the heart, the will, the discipline and determination and the qualities which one looks forward to in a football team," said Burrell.

The Reggae Boyz, who returned to the island yesterday, are scheduled to leave the island today en route to St Kitts & Nevis for another friendly international on Sunday. This squad will be entirely local based as part of the expected rebuilding process by the JFF.

Three newcomers have been added to the squad. Twenty-six -year-old Seba United midfielder Deshaun Woolery, 22-year-old Boys' Town forward Peter Keyes and another 22-year-old, Sporting Central defender Linval Lewis, will travel with the national team for the first time.

The 18-man Reggae Boyz squad also sees the return to international duty of Reno midfielder Evan Taylor, Sporting Central's Je-Vaughn Watson and Portmore United's Ricardo Cousins.

Accompanying the squad will be head of delegation Patrick Malcolm; head coach Theodore Whitmore; assistant coach Bradley Stewart; manager Howard Bell; Dr Carlton Fraser, team physician and equipment manager Norman Stone.

Squad: Dwayne Miller, Shawn Sawyers, Jermaine Taylor, Linval Lewis, Ricardo Cousins, Oraine Simpson, Deshaun Woolery, Evan Taylor, Michael Campbell, Peter Keyes, Bryan Bayliss, Keammar Daley, Lovel Palmer, Je-Vaughn Watson, Devon Hodges, Andre Campbell, Dicoy Williams and Richard Edwards.

Interesting. Burrell's press agent is working overtime, as one can see by the tone here. The blame has been taken off him completely. And there is no mention that while Ecuador's team was fairly strong, they were missing not only Valencia, but Edison Mendez, Felipe Caicedo, Giovanny Espinosa, Neicer Riasco and Joffre Guerron. But this was coming, as we could see the excuses building to chop some of the Boyz.
