I am now going to go on record for calling for Olivera to be replaced as Technical Director now, before it is too late.
I am not convinced that he, along with the current coaching staff, can take Jamaica to the big dance. My reason for what is a very controversial and unorthodox call is simply this: Olivera has not shown in all the games since he has been in charge, to have the ability to get our footballers to believe that they can be the BEST team in CONCACAF, that they can WIN, that they can play beyond themselves when playing for country.
My primary reason for my call for a change is therefore Olivera’s inability to motivate, communicate, and get the respect of Jamaican international footballers. Olivera does not have the leadership presence to get Jamaican players to play a sophisticated tactical style needed to win in WCQ. Let me not hear that our footballers are incapable: they do it playing for their clubs. More than one Jamaican international footballer has privately told me that that “I don’t think we understand him enough”. These same footballers long wistfully for the sophistication they saw in Lazaroni during his short spell as National team coach. His class was very obvious just from the way he conducted training sessions. When footballers do not understand the coach, there is no communicative medium to get strategy understood and implemented; no channel to motivate footballers for international competition.
I have a secondary reason for wanting a change: Olivera does not have the technical nous for strategy at the international level. His technical naïveté has been exposed many times. He was out-coached by Bruce Arena in Kingston. The timing of his substitutions has always been too late to get deserved wins. His defensive frailties show a lack of knowledge in defending against even the lesser threatening set-pieces like corners and long range free-kicks.
I have held my tongue on this for too long, but no more. Some long-time members will remember that I placed an early call for Simoes departure after the debacle of the last CONCACAF Championships. In that case, my reason was that Rene no longer had the fire in his belly for the Jamaica national team, which showed in their on-field play.
It is not too late to change course. Even with a loss or draw against Mexico, Jamaica can still recover. It takes time to hire a new coach and staff, and the search and negotiations should covertly begin now. I would love to be shamefully corrected come September 1 against Mexico, but I am a realist, and have recognized the systematic and endemic reasons why Olivera cannot lead us to the promised land. I have nothing against him personally. He is a very nice person. Some would say too nice to our footballers while preparing for games for a Technical Director. Again, this is just my observation and based on conversations with footballers.
For the JFF to act now will take the proverbial balls of steel from Horace Burrell. He may already have started to look, as despite his outward exertions, his current level of confidence is not as high as it was exactly four years ago. Then, his belief was based on the environment for excellence and the fact that all footballers (with the exception of Blacka) held Simoes awe, and believed that he could take the team to France. Burrell cannot be seeing that environment in the current team leadership and structure.
Change the head before it is too late. To the non-visionaries, the Jamaica WCQ effort is in crisis, which calls for crisis management and solutions.

DSweet,
Without getting into reading your article, but it already is too late.
Jamaica will float or sink with this TD.
The Mexico game being the crucial game to perform in, if Linval Dixon plays, Jamaica will be in for a long day.
Peace.

Respect DSweet, after the T&T game I too called for his removal, but I felt like a voice crying in the wilderness. Your assessments are right on the button. We are allowing him to learn on the job and that does nothing for us. Even Stevie Wonder can see that the T.D. has no clue about his personnel, his system of play, his opponents or his motivational skills. He is always unable to put together an effective game day plan and always seem to be out coached. He might be a likable guy and well liked by his players but after a certain point they all must realize, that he has obvious limitations. If we examine how the team plays on game day, we will see that they have no flow and in general are just ad-libbing. Bora Mutionvic(sp) once said that if a team can't string together 5-10 consecutive passes then they cannot be classed as being a good team or a professional team. When was the last time we have been able to keep possession of the ball for any length of time? It is clear that if there is a skill or area in which a team is deficient, there are drills that exist to enhance proficiency, in other words, the coach has to teach them how to improve. We can kill any team or hold our own on our narrow field but we get killed on a wide field. We need to come into modern times where we play as a team and not to rely on individuals to carry us on their backs. Why do you think we have a hard time scoring goals? The Coach therefore has the difficult task of putting the team in position to win and if he fails to do so then he must be removed. In this case winning is everything and we should play to win.
Peace

dweetsweet2 i dont think their is anyone that can sum things up any better than you just did. At best i think D'olivera coaching abilities are suspect after the the Costa Rican game i lost all confidence in this TD... Fuller made such a big difference in that game but he was put in like 5 minutes before the game ended, the best player in the world would be hard pressed to make a difference in 5 minutes.. Just to preempt that incident i also heard on this forum that he conceded that our team could not beat Mexico at Azteca stadium, just imaging for a moment if the Costa Rican TD had told that to his players Mexico would have still been unbeaten at home... Personally i am resigned to the fact that we wont be in Korea/Japan and it is not a defeatist attitude or a waggonist mindset but i am a realist and if you look at things objectively you will see the same also... I believe in the Reggea Boyz and my JAMAICA, but the TD is another story

How effective was Lazaroni? How many games did we win with him? Jamaica has played its best game ever under Clovis- The game against Honduras in Jamaica was, in my humble opinion even better than the WC game against Japan. I am no expert, but I challenge any one to refute that simple point. It seems to me that the TD is being blamed just a bit too much for our failure to score.
I will concede the Mexico match- altitude- and even there we had a chance. If Clovis did not miss the penalty; if Clovis had scored on at least two of the good chances that Burton and Lowe had ,then he would be Pele and 'Lazaroni' all in one!
Clovis also missed those many chances in the US game!!
Please!!!!! WE gave away two of the last three games 6 points
Let the man finish the job. Maybe we just need to face the fact that the Boyz are not yet mentally prepered to do the job. Endless skills not enough experience as a team. Let's also blame Clovis for the lack of practice games.
It's very ironic, we blame him for the behavior of the adults, but we don't praise him for the achievements of the youths.
But I'm no expert! Leave the ------------ TD alone. Are all the final decisions his?

Give the TD a break yow!
Removing Clovis will solve our problem? You must be kidding me!
At least wait until the campaign is over to access the man. Bringing in another TD now will totally disrupt the program, and at this critical stage!
D'sweet, it's better you go on fasting and pray hard that Nandi, Whitmore, and Andy delivers come Mexico match.
The TD might have some shortcomings, but at this stage, BREEZE THE TD MAN!!

Rasputin and Zouse you guys cant see the Forest for the trees!!!! Rasputin i quote"Jamaica as played it's best game under D'olivera?? have you lost your MIND?? i thought the game against Brazil in Miami was the best game they ever played and this was under (Rene Simoes).. Zouse removing Clovis wont solve our problems, but it certainly wont fix it by keeping him iether. Zouse!!! pray for what? pray to win thats bullschit!!! what our opponents dont pray too, Zouse should god favor us over them?? Zouse you win with good preparation and hard work of which this team lacks right now and sure we cant blame the TD for everything.. Some if not all the posters on this forum have critiqued one player or another at some point in time, so why not the TD? what makes him special or different?? We agree on one thing let him finish what he started which will end October in Foxboro and then ship him off to Brazil...

Dweetsweet2, Jah B and the rest I have being calling for his head since he told the team that Mex was superior to them and, that Mex and USA have already qualified for the WC, which leaves four teams to fight for the third spot.
I think he should have been fired immediately for his careless and irresponsible comment.
All the teams in the region is scared of yard, I was talking to some Hondurian brethern last week and they expressing great concern about Honduras using their 5:3:2 formation against the boyz because they thought Lowe commanded 2 defenders and the boyz were simply too quick.
I don't think Clovis is ready for the big league as yet, maybe he is stunned at his acheivements.
I think we should get a coach from Argentina, their system and phylosophy would suit us best.

I must agree that the game against Brazil in Miami was the best game I have ever saw them play. But check this. How sure are we that Clovis is getting all the support he needs. We got a sample of the lack of communication between him and his assistant coach when Tappa was missing. I am very worried about what is happening with the team. Only the grace of God can help us. I do not think that we can just blame one or two individuals. All involved must share the responsibility. Remember you are as strong as your weakest link. Everyone must pull their weight. I hope that we can dump some of the baggage that is holding the program from moving forward.

Hi Dsweet, Also I have said that the TD is not a teacher of the game. He is a coach at best. We need a teacher like Simoes to communicate to the players. The TD has not come up with any logan to motivate the players. His staff is back stabbing the TD especially C.Brown. What can we do. I said replace the staff.

Which Brasil Match was our best match? The first game in the Gold Cup Barrett should have been given the OM for Service Beyond The Call of Duty. The second game we played good ball but not paticularly penetrating ball. Tappa had the ball spin-spinning round at midfield and seemed to have found his sense of direction a little before Junior Biano killed him off. How much did we test Taffarell? My memory doesn't serve me well but I think Taffarell's Jersey was pretty clean. God is a Jamaican! Japan outshot us 28 to 16 and we won 2-1. For my money the best I have seen a Jamaican side play was in the Mexico WCQ in Mexico. We made three mistakes in defence during that game and they led to goals plus a very fortunate rebound for Mexico handed them the second goal. Possibly had the TD not told the team the rubbish about Mexico being superior we would have won. In that match we created chances on the counter attack on normal attacks on individual as well as team efforts. We dominated the midfield and missed a hatfull of chances onces we had gone through the defense. We were caught three times without cover at the back and because of that that game has been dismissed as a disaster. Most importantly this game was played at altitude. We have had better results, but technically we have never challanged any team in the manner in which we challanged Mexico. Those who have the ability to re-watch that game do so and then challenge my position.

Oliveira is going nowhere until possibly after the WC campaign (if Jamaica fails to qualify).

Oliveria noh ready!!!! Plain and simple. The most obvious example of this is in the way he utilizes Bibi. Bibi has the potential to be a game breaker as he has done many times plaing for Bolton. However Clovis persists to use him at left back which is a definite waste. Furthermore it is alos obvious that he is either ignorant or afraid of Nandi as he again continues to allow him to play. Granted he scores but nuff more goals could have scored if he cooperates with his teammates by running off the ball more, passing the ball and encouraging rather that cussing his teammates. The situation with corner kicks and set pieces also speaks eloquently to the fact that Clovis a idiot. That situation should have been remdied long time ago either in training or substituing personels who can actually defend thses plays. One solution is to fire the goalkeeper coach as by now the goalies should have conqured this problem. Clovis also dont know how or when to substitute. This is the only coach who when he substitutes he makes our team weaker as evidenced by the Honduras game. In Trinidad he wasted many subsitutions and no way Micah Hyde should have been replaced. These players ahve got to be confused as to what the coach requires of them. The satement before the Mexico game was coaching suicide and self destructive to the team. It is as if the coach dont believe in is own players. The players took that into the beginning of the game we lost the game in the first 25 minutes. The Boyz will never reach anywhere with this man as coach because plain and simple, he does not realize what is going on. We have the players but he fails to use them and use them properly. An example is Barry Hyde and Winston Griffiths. Hyde was discarded too soon and so was Griffiths. I still throwing my pawdna in the hopes of going to the Orient, but it look like the Boyz wont be there as long as Clovis is running the ship.

The biggest problem is not only the TD but the JFF. They lack the preplanning and the imagination of nailing down some good, quality friendlies. Instead we are relegated to playing teams like St. Kitts (who we couldnt beat),Cuba and so on. We are a team that has the ability to rise our level to that of our competion. The JFF dont realise but they are underminding the team by not arranging better fixtures. It is a little too late to whine, all I can do is hope for the best. I do believe we have the team, but not the management.

I must put in my two cents worth and repeat what I said after the US game: the coach nuh have nuh strategy. Any idiat can see the middle nah link with the forwards and the defence is in disarray. Sorry Ites but we nah se one annda in WC2002 better start throwing the pawdna for WC2006 in Germany.

Zouse, my point is that the JFF is not doing their jobs by arranging quality friendly fixtures. They cant expect to warm up agaist sub par opponents and turn a round and expect to play the region's elite when it really counts. Iam sure there are many top flight countries that would love to play Jamaica. End of story.
